A few years ago, Lyon airport was connected to the city by the Rhônexpress tram line. Its length is almost 25 kilometers. At the same time, more than half is the infrastructure of the previously existing tram line.

Lyon-Saint-Exupéry International Airport(fr. Aeroport Lyon-Saint Exupery), formerly Lyon-Satolyas (fr. Airport de Lyon-Satolas listen)) is located 25 kilometers east of Lyon. Opened April 12, 1975.
In 2008, the passenger traffic of the airport amounted to more than 7.9 million passengers. This is the fourth airport in France in terms of passenger traffic after Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris-Orly, and Nice Airport. The airport is operated by Aéroports de Lyon.
Story
The decision to build a new airport in Lyon was made in the 1960s, when Lyon-Bron Airport could no longer cope with passenger traffic. Lyon-Bron, located 10 km from the city center, could not be expanded and new terminals could be built, and the runways were too short to accommodate large aircraft serving long-haul lines. At the same time, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lyon insisted that the Rhone-Alpes region, the center of which is Lyon, should have a modern international airport.
In 1965, a preliminary study began on where a modern airport could be built, although even a decision on the construction of such an airport had not yet been taken. The location of the airport had to satisfy several criteria: ease of access from the largest cities in the region, the absence of urban development, as well as good air navigation characteristics. Quite quickly the plain to the east of Lyon was chosen.
Work on the construction of the airport continued for four years; there was no delay from schedule or overspending of budgeted funds. The airport was opened on April 12, 1975 by French President Valerie Giscard d'Estaing, the prefect of the Rhone-Alpes region, Pierre Duail, and the president of the Lyon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Fernand Blanc. Flights were rescheduled from Lyon-Bron on the night of 19/20 April; on the same day, the first commercial flight arrived at the airport, operated by Air Inter from Paris.
Initially, the airport had only one 4,000-meter runway and two terminals. Passenger traffic was three million people a year. In 1989, an investment program was launched to double the airport's capacity. In May 1992, a new 2,670 meter strip was put into operation.
In 1994, a TGV line was installed to the airport. The station building was designed by Santiago Calatrava and is considered one of the masterpieces of modern architecture. On October 24, 1997, Air France opened a hub in Lyon, for which the terminals were reorganized. On June 29, 2000, on the centenary of the birth of Antoine Saint-Exupery, Lyon-Satolyas Airport was renamed Lyon-Saint-Exupery.
In 2005, the government commissioned a study on the quality of airport management. The report was highly critical of the management, in particular the lagging behind other European airports, lack of discounters, insufficient rail and road connections. As a result, Aéroports de Lyon was established on 21 December 2006 and took over the management of the airport in March 2007. The concession is currently valid until 2047.
Transport
The airport is located 25 km from the center of Lyon, 75 km from Saint-Étienne, 85 km from Chambéry and 90 km from Grenoble. It can be accessed in different ways:
- By the A432 motorway connecting A42 (in the north) and A43 (in the south);
- By network bus Satobus, connecting the airport with the largest cities in the region: Lyon, Grenoble, Bourgoin-Jallieu, Bourg-en-Bress (via Amberieu-en-Buge), Annecy (via Chambéry), Aix-les-Bains, in winter also with the main ski resorts;
- By TGV train from the station under the airport (Paris, as well as the cities of the region and the lower Rhone).
On August 9, 2010, the construction of the Rhônexpress tram line was completed, which connected the airport with the center of Lyon. The line is 23 km long, with 14.6 km using the infrastructure of the existing tram line.

Tram
Since 2010, the Rhônexpress light rail service has been running between the airport and the central station of Part Dieu. The trip will take only 30 minutes, along the way there are several stops at transfer hubs. Trams depart from 5:00 to midnight: every 15 minutes during the day and every half an hour in the evening. The fare for adults is 15.90 EUR, for young people under 25 years old - 13.20 EUR, for children under 12 years old - free of charge. Tickets can be bought at the terminals.
Transfer
The fastest and most comfortable way to get there. You need to choose a car of a suitable class and capacity in advance, and the driver will meet you at the airport with a name plate. The cost indicated at the time of booking will be fixed: for example, traffic jams will not affect it.
