How can you get to Koh Chang from Bangkok? Transfer to Koh Chang from Bangkok and Pattaya - prices and methods Road from Bangkok to Koh Chang

Hello friends. I always wanted to go to some exotic island. Feel like a native, eat bananas and swim in the sea. And such an opportunity presented itself. Alla and I visited, where there are many wonderful beaches, pristine nature and a large selection of entertainment for tourists. We made reservations before the trip and were ready to go to the island. All that remained was to find out how to get there, how long it would take to travel. The distance is not small - 330 km. I had to scour the Internet and find out all the options. I'm sharing with you.

From this article you will learn how to get from Bangkok to Koh Chang on your own using various means of transport, the cost of moving and how long it will take.

Very important! We must remember that some buses from Bangkok go to the city of Trat, closest to the island of Koh Chang, which is also the capital of Trat province. Arriving at the Trat bus station, you transfer to a local taxi (songthaew), which takes you to Koh Chang pier in 10 minutes (price 70 baht).

There is another option: the bus stops on the highway and tourists are picked up by a specially fitted pickup truck, which takes them to the pier. Then ferry and island taxi to your beach. In short, this is it. Now more details.

From Bangkok East Bus Terminal Ekkamai Bus Terminal

This option is the easiest, since buses from Ekkamai Bus Terminal (also called Eastern Bus Terminal) to Koh Chang depart every 30 minutes, from 6 am to 11 pm. The bus station is located in the city center next to the Ekkamai metro station, a 5-minute walk.

We wrote where the bus stations are in Bangkok and how to get to them.

Several bus companies depart from the Ekkamai Bus Terminal to Koh Chang. The cost of the trip is 250-280 baht one way. The price includes a bottle of water and snacks. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours. The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and make a couple of stops along the way. First, buses go to the city of Trat, and immediately to the Koh Chang pier.

Before purchasing a ticket, check at the ticket office whether the bus stops at the Koh Chang pier.
By the way, from the Ekkamai bus station you can go to Trat and Koh Chang by minivan.

From Bangkok North Station Ekkamai Bus Terminal

The Mo Chit Bus Terminal (or Northern Bus Terminal) is suitable for those who fly to Don Muang Airport (the bus station is very close), or for those who come from the north of Thailand, for example, from Chiang Mai.

The cost of the trip is 250-280 baht one way. The price includes a bottle of water and snacks. The journey takes approximately 5-6 hours. The buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, provide blankets, and make a couple of stops along the way.
All buses arrive at the Trat bus station. As I wrote above, at the station you take a songthaew and go to the pier.

From Victory Monument metro station

The metro station is located in the city center. Suvarnabhumi Airport is a 40-minute drive away. From the city it's even faster. From here to Koh Chang there are minibuses, or minivans. And what’s good is that it’s right to the Koh Chang pier. Dispatched frequently. Tickets are sold near city bus stops and the market. Ticket price 300 baht. Travel time is 5 hours.

Cons: The minivan doesn't have much luggage space. Sometimes you have to put your suitcase in the aisle. We were traveling in such a minivan from Koh Chang to Pattaya, we could barely fit our luggage, and there were quite a lot of people there. We got seats in front next to the driver. The seat was uncomfortable, I sat for 4 hours either on the springs or on the edge. The body is noticeably tired. Now in Thailand I prefer to travel by bus.

From Khao San Road

Very lucky are those who stay in Bangkok on Khao San Road. It will be easiest for them to buy a ticket and get to Koh Chang. A transfer to Koh Chang (you can buy a round-trip ticket right away, it will be a little cheaper) can be purchased at the so-called local travel agencies, which are located on the street at every turn. Choose the most beautiful one and go there. Transfer cost 400-900 baht per person.

It’s even easier to buy a transfer at the hotel itself (where you live) at the reception. If suddenly your hotel does not have such a service, go to a neighboring hotel.

Only minivans operate from Khao San Road. Buses simply don't go there. I voiced the minus of the minivan above. If this doesn't bother you and you live on Khao San Road, then look no further for other options. Buy here and better the day before your trip. There are many tourists who want to go to Koh Chang. Transfer from Khao San Road is popular.

From Suvarnabhumi Airport

There are three options for getting there from the airport.

1. By bus No. 392 by Suvarnabhumi Burapha Bus service. Takes you to Koh Chang via the mainland Centerpoint Pier. On the island, you are transferred from the bus to a songthaew, which takes tourists to the desired beach.

Departures from the airport once a day: 7.50. Return from Koh Chang at 13.00. From Trat to Suvarnabhumi Airport at 14.00. That is, the return route of the bus is as follows: Koh Chang Island - Trat Airport.

One way ticket price is 600 baht. Round trip 900 baht. The price includes a ferry ticket, a bottle of water, and snacks. The site of the company.

2. Lonely Beach express minibus from the same company. It will take you straight to the beach. Tickets are sold on the ground floor of the airport next to Gate 8. How to order tickets online is described on the company's website.

One way ticket price is 600 baht. Round trip 900 baht. The ferry is included in the price. The minibus makes a couple of stops along the way.

3. From the bus station at Bus Terminal Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Buses to Trat from the northern bus station of Mo Chit pass through it. From Ekkamai South Bus Station, Government Bus 999 runs through the airport bus station.

I gave the schedule above. Just add half an hour to an hour for the bus journey from the bus station to the airport.

Transfer to Koh Chang

For those who love comfort and don’t want to make unnecessary movements, I recommend ordering transfer online, that is, book a car with a driver in advance via the Internet.

You will be met in the arrivals hall, your luggage will be carried to your car and you will be taken exactly to the main entrance of the hotel. You can order a transfer to Koh Chang online using the form below. At the time of booking you need to pay about 15% of the transfer cost, the rest of the amount is paid in cash to the driver. A group transfer will be more affordable.

Taxi to Koh Chang

You can take a taxi at the airport, arrange it on the street, or at your hotel in Bangkok. The cost of a taxi to the ferry is approximately 2500-3500 baht, to the hotel on Koh Chang 4000-6000 baht (the taxi is loaded onto the ferry with you). You can try to bargain.

I wrote prices for a standard car that can fit 4 people. For a large company you will have to order a minivan. Booking will cost a little more, but if you spread it across the whole group, it will be cheaper per person.

Car rent

If you know how and like to drive a car, you can take it to. It’s certainly nice to manage your own time and route, but remember that traffic in Thailand is on the left. The roads are good, but if you deviate from the main routes, you may end up with “surprises”. What driver's license is needed to drive in Thailand read here.

By plane from Bangkok to Trat

Koh Chang does not have its own airport. The nearest one is in Trat. Therefore, from Bangkok, and indeed from other parts of the country, you will need to buy an air ticket to Trat airport. Only one airline flies there, Bangkok Airways. One way price 3200 baht, travel time 1 hour. They fly 3 times a day.

Hurry up to buy a plane ticket to Koh Chang

At the airport, take a taxi, minibus or minibus and go to the pier. The cost of a minibus to the pier is 100 baht, the cost of a minibus to the beach is about 400 baht (to White Sand Beach), a taxi to the hotel is 2000 baht.

How to get from Trat to Koh Chang

If a bus from Bangkok brings you to the Trat Bus Terminal, then after disembarking you take a taxi (songthaew), which can easily be found here. Tell the driver ferry to Kho Chang and he will take you to the pier in a few minutes without any problems. The asking price is 50-100 baht. If the driver asks you which pier to take you to, then...read the next section.

Ferries to Koh Chang

There are 2 piers on the mainland side from which ferries run to Koh Chang. They have different schedules and different travel times.

1. Ko Chang Ferry Pier, also known as Ao Thammachart. It is closer to Bangkok. And more often this is where buses, minivans and other tourist transport run.

They run every 30 minutes from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm. They float for 25-30 minutes. The cost is 80 baht one way, 120 baht round trip with an open date in the opposite direction. The price for a car there and back is 200 baht.

2. Center Point Ferry Pier. They go every hour. Swim for 1 hour. Distance to Trat 20 km. Ferries run from 6:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays until 9:00 p.m. The cost is 80 baht one way, 120 baht round trip with an open date in the opposite direction. We did not depart from this pier. They say that they do not charge money for transporting the car.

How to get from the ferry to the beach

When the ferry takes you to the island, you will have several options to get to the beach. Since almost all the hotels are located along the only road on the island, getting to the hotel will not be difficult.

1.If your price included a taxi from the ferry to the hotel, then look for a minivan with the name of the company you paid for the transfer with. Show the receipt, get into the car and say the name of the beach or hotel.

2. If the transfer from the ferry to the beach was not included in the price, then choose one of the available pickups. All prices are the same. There is no point in bargaining.

If you have not yet chosen a beach, we recommend that you first stop at the first beach, White Sand beach, and rent accommodation for a couple of days. Take a closer look, go to the neighboring beaches. And then decide whether you will stay here or choose another beach. We recommend the beach

As you can see, there are plenty of options for getting to Koh Chang from Bangkok. All you have to do is decide which one to choose, based on your route and departure time to the island. 5-7 hours of travel is still not easy to endure, even if you are traveling on a comfortable bus. Tourists often take night flights. The calculation is simple: save on a hotel and at the same time get some sleep on the way. It's like killing two birds with one stone.

In fact, on the bus you will not be able to stretch your legs and take a horizontal position, and you may also find restless neighbors or parents with an awake child. And your night trip will turn into a nightmare. The next day is lost - you will walk around sluggish or irritable, or just sleep it off.

I'm not discouraging you from traveling overnight. Sometimes this option is very convenient (especially in Europe). Just take note of any road surprises and be prepared for them. So, have a good trip!

Where to stay on Koh Chang

Now many housing options on Koh Chang have appeared on the service AirBnb. We have written how to use this service. If you do not find a free hotel room, then look for accommodation through this booking site.

3. Suvarnabhumi Airport.

a) Bus and minivans.

How to get from Pattaya to Koh Chang

1) Minibus at travel agencies in Pattaya.

You can get from Pattaya to Koh Chang by minibus. Tickets are sold at any local travel agency and cost from 400 baht one way.

A minibus can be ordered from many transport agencies, but we will recommend only one, where the prices are the lowest and whose services we have used more than once, it is called 35 Group Pattaya.

A ticket from Pattaya costs 400 baht one way (includes ferry). Round trip 720 baht including ferry from Ao Thammachat Pier. Minivans depart at 7, 9, 11, 13 o'clock.

In addition, with the company 35 Group Pattaya you can get to the island (250 baht one way with a ferry ticket), and (300 baht without a ferry), (500 baht without a ferry).

2) Excursion from Pattaya.

Buy a tour to Koh Chang in Pattaya with transfer included (you can agree on the number of nights of accommodation and stay there).

3) Taxi.

The most comfortable way. A taxi can be ordered at the hotel, arranged in the city or.

How to get from Trat to Koh Chang

Trat is an important transit point between the island and other cities in Thailand, as well as Cambodia. The main transport hubs are the airport and the city bus station.

Planes from Bangkok arrive at the airport several times a day. You can get from there to Koh Chang by orange songthaew, minibus, or taxi.

How to get from Phuket to Koh Chang

There are no direct buses, minibuses, ferries or planes between Koh Chang and Phuket. First you need to get to Bangkok, you can fly by plane or take a bus.

How to get to Koh Chang from Cambodia

First of all, people are interested in how to get to Koh Chang from Siem Reap (next to which the Angkor Wat temple complex is located) and Sihanoukville.

From Siem Reap and Sihanoukville

The city's street travel agencies cover a fairly large geography; there are often transfers to Koh Chang. If you don’t find this, then you can take a ticket to the border. Having arrived, crossed it and found yourself in Thailand, you can easily find agencies that have minibuses to the island. And there are always minivans going to the border near the border. And there you need to change to a songthaew, which will take you to the pier in half an hour.

It’s even easier to get from Sihanoukville - this direction is even more popular. Any city agency offers transfers to Koh Chang. First, the bus takes you to the border, then you change to a minibus on the Thai side and it goes to Center Point Pier (it may stop at the Trat bus station on the way). Sometimes along the way he makes a stop at a Thai travel agency, which offers a transfer directly to the hotel for a fee. If you don’t want to, the minibus goes to the Center Point pier on the mainland, they give you a ferry ticket and then take the songthaew from Koh Chang pier to the beach.

How to get from Koh Chang to Siem Reap and Sihanoukville

Siem Reap and Angkor are very popular destinations, many go there from Koh Chang. All travel agencies on the island offer transfers, prices start from 400 baht. First, you are picked up from your hotel, then a minibus takes you to the border, and on the Cambodian side a bus will be waiting for you, going to Siem Reap.

There are also transfers to Sihanoukville according to a similar scheme. Ask at Koh Chang travel agencies.

Piers on Koh Chang and mainland

In the north of the island there are two piers where all ships from the mainland arrive: Ao Sapparot (also known as Feery Koh Chang) and Center Point (Dan Khao). There are also two piers on the mainland - Ao Thammachat (Ao Thammachat, from which ferries go to Ao Sapparot) and Center Point (to Center Point on the island). There are others (like Laem Ngop Fishing Jetty), but there you can only buy tickets for ferries departing from Center Point, and they themselves do not serve tourists. From the Laem Sok pier there is water transport only to the islands and.

When you arrive at one of the piers on Koh Chang, there will be stands there that deliver goods around the island. All prices are fixed and written upon entering the car. Prices to get there are as follows:

  • - 50 baht,
  • - 60 baht,
  • - 70 baht
  • - 80 baht,
  • -100 baht,
  • - 120 baht.

Ao Thammachat Pier

Ao Thammachat is the most famous and most popular pier on the mainland from which you can reach Koh Chang. Located in Trat province, in the Laem Ngop subdistrict. Most buses and minivans arrive here from Bangkok and Pattaya. Ferries go from here to Ao Sapparot pier on Koh Chang. Travel time is 25 minutes, fare is 100 baht. You can cross by motorbike or car. Ferries depart every half hour from 6:30 to 19:00.

Center Point Pier

Center Point Pier is also located in Laem Ngop, about 15 km from the previous one. From here, ferries operate exclusively to Center Point on Koh Chang. Travel time is 55 minutes. They leave for the island every hour from 6 am to 7 pm (6 am, 7 am, 8 am, etc.). Similarly, to the mainland, the first flight also starts at 6:00, the second at 7:30, the third at 8:30, etc. every hour. Ticket price is 80 baht one way and 120 baht return. The cost of a ferry ticket for a motorbike is 30 and 50 baht, respectively, for a car - for 100 and 180 baht. Small children - free. It is better not to count on a flight from the mainland at 19:00, as it is sometimes cancelled. Also, don't rely too much on the last flight from Koh Chang to the mainland at 19:30.

The pier is the closest to, so if you flew there by plane or got to its bus station by bus, then all the tuk-tuks from there will take you to this pier, and not to Ao Thammachat, which is further away.

Laem Ngop Fishing Jetty Pier

Often called simply Laem Ngop is located 5 km east of Center Point Pier. Tuk-tuks don’t bring tourists here and it doesn’t make much sense to come here on your own (by car, motorbike), except perhaps for the lighthouse or to spend the night and go to Koh Chang in the morning.

Next to the pier there is a travel agency that sells tickets to Koh Chang from Center Point Pier. There is a small scam here, but not in terms of prices, but in the sense that they will prove to you that with these tickets you can go from any pier and return to any pier (as mentioned above, Center Point is less preferable, since from it drive to the island for about an hour). In fact, these tickets cannot sail from Ao Thammachat to Ao Sapparot, only from Center Point. This office also sells tickets for ferries to the islands (350 baht for a regular boat and 450 for a high-speed boat), (300 and 450), (350 and 600 baht, respectively).

If you are hungry, there is a nice restaurant on the pier where you can cook crabs swimming in an aquarium upon your order. Prices are low.

There are different ways to get to Koh Chang. In this video we will tell you how to get to the island using a plane, bus or taxi. Which way to get to Koh Chang is the most convenient and cheapest? Watch the video now.

Additionally, we have collected all the necessary information about these methods and compiled complete step-by-step instructions. There is no airport on the island, so from Bangkok, Pattaya and other cities you can get in several ways to Trat province (near Koh Chang), then go to the pier and take a ferry to the island. Or, bypassing Trat, go straight to the pier and then take a ferry to the island.

An important point to consider first is that the last ferry to Koh Chang leaves at 19:00. The first ferry leaves at 6 am. Plan your route and departure time so that you arrive on time.

Bus from bus stations -> transfer to the pier -> ferry

You can get to Koh Chang by bus from two bus stations in Bangkok:

MorChit Bus Terminal on Kamphaeng Phet Road [also known as Northern]. Located near BTS MorChit and MRT Chatuchak Park MRT stations. (see map below) From these stations you can reach Mor Chit on foot in 15 minutes. If you have luggage or don’t want to walk, you can take a motorcycle taxi for 30 baht (30 rubles) or a taxi from 45 baht (45 rubles). From Bangkok's Hualamphong Train Station, you can get here directly via the MRT Blue Line. Buses No. 77 also go here (from Victory Monument)

Ekamai Bus Terminal on Sukhumwit Road [also known as Eastern]. Getting to the bus terminal is very easy. It is located at Ekkamai BTS Station, a 5-minute walk (see map below)

You will have to go with a transfer through the city of Trat. It is the capital of the province of the same name, which includes Koh Chang.

Several companies provide transportation, so if you don’t find the right time at the ticket office, then most likely there is another window with tickets nearby. And sometimes several flights depart at the same time. There is no fundamental difference between bus companies.

The fare includes a bottle of water and, they say, a small snack like cookies (we only had water). The bus makes several stops, so there will be time to run to the toilet or buy something to eat.

Destination: Trat Bus Terminal (bus station of the city of Trat).
Duration of the trip: 4-6 hours.
Ticket price: 200-400 baht (200-400 rubles) depending on the bus company
Ferry tickets are not included in the price.

You are then transferred by shuttle to the pier (usually an open taxi for 10 people, which is included in the price).

Bus/minibus from airports -> ferry (no transfer)

The advantage of this method:

You can only get to Koh Chang by bus from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport. Bus No. 999 stops at the bass terminal next to it, going from Ekamai Bass Terminal directly to Laem Ngop Pier. There are free shuttle buses that go to this place. These buses only run in the morning, at 7:45, 8:45 and 9:45. Travel time: 6 hours. Price 275 baht (275 rubles) per person, ferry cost not included.

You can also take bus No. 392 from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Laem Ngop Pier, but they only run in high season, i.e. from October to May. The ticket costs 310 baht (310 rubles). Ferry included. But he walks only once a day! At 7:30 from the airport and at 12:00 from Koh Chang. Actually, that’s why no one can guarantee you tickets.

Also on the ground floor of Suvarnabhumi Airport, next to exit 8, they sell tickets for minibuses directly to Koh Chang, they cost about 600 baht (600 rubles) one way or 800 baht (800 rubles) round trip, they take you to Koh Chang to your chosen location/beach. These minibuses depart at 7:40, 11:00 and 14:00.

There is no transport from Don Mueang Airport to Koh Chang - neither to Laem Ngop, nor to Trat, they only offer taxi services at unrealistic prices. So plan your route in advance.

You have arrived at the pier, you need to buy ferry tickets and sail to the island.

Minibus from bus stations -> transfer to the pier -> ferry

Minibus is a minibus with 10 seats, with air conditioning.

We chose this option because we considered it the most optimal for ourselves. At the Ekamai Bus Terminal in Bangkok we bought a ticket costing 300 baht (300 rubles). We took it one day in advance, you can buy it on the day of departure, but there may not be tickets available. So this is everyone's choice, at their own peril and risk. The drive takes about 6 hours.

Similar buses depart from Mo Chit Bus Terminal and Suvarnabhumi Airport.

We board a minibus that goes to the city of Trat, where we are transferred with our suitcases to another car and taken straight to the pier from which ferries to Koh Chang depart.

Minibus from the city -> ferry (no transfer)

The advantage of this method: you are taken to the pier without transfers from Bangkok.

Many travel agencies on Khao San Street (the most famous tourist street in the capital) offer transfer services to Koh Chang. This is convenient only for those who are staying in Bangkok in this particular area, otherwise there is no point in going from here. They take you away from Khao San.

The ticket price usually includes the cost of the ferry. But this question must be clarified in advance. The price is somewhere around 500-700 baht (500-700 rubles). But they go straight to the pier (you don’t have to change trains in Trat like you would on a bus). It is better to buy tickets to Koh Chang here in advance, the day before the trip. Well, they will pay more attention: they will take you by the hand, put you in a chair and drop you off at the ferry.

There are also travel companies right at Suvarnabhumi Airport. This method is convenient for those who have just arrived and want to immediately leave for Koh Chang without visiting the city. At the airport, minibus tickets directly to Koh Chang can be found next to exit 8, they cost approximately 600 baht (600 rubles) one way or 800 baht (800 rubles) round trip; on Koh Chang they will take you to the place/beach of your choice . These minibuses depart at 7:40, 11:00 and 14:00.

You can also take a minibus from the Victory Monument metro station. Ticket prices are the same. But it’s worth going from here to Koh Chang, as in the previous case, if you are staying somewhere nearby.

You have arrived at the pier, you need to buy ferry tickets and sail to the island.

Airplane from 8 countries -> transfer to the pier -> ferry

You can get to Koh Chang by plane. This is one of the most expensive ways to get to the island. There is no airport on the island itself, so we will fly to the city of Trat. There is only one airline that flies to Trat - Bangkok Airways. Koh Chang Airport (more precisely the city of Trat) is the property of the company.

The cost of the flight is 3500-4500 rubles, they fly three times a day.

Flight duration - 1 hour.

You can right now download the current schedule of all Bangkok Airways flights to your computer in pdf format from the official website at this link: http://www.bangkokair.com/eng/pages/view/flight-schedule

Then from the airport in the city of Trat to either of the two piers you will need to take a taxi or bus. The price is from 100 baht (100 rubles) and above, it depends on whether you are going only to the pier or directly to the hotel on Koh Chang.

And take a ferry to the island itself.

By the way, in addition to Bangkok, you can fly to Trat Airport from the following cities:
Abu Dhabi, UAE (AUH)
Lampang, Thailand (LPT)
Phuket, Thailand (HKT)
Koh Samui, Thailand (USM)
Sukhothai, Thailand (THS)
Chiang Mai, Thailand (CNX)
Udon Thani, Thailand (UTH)
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (KUL)
Luang Prabang, Laos (LPQ)
Mumbai, India (BOM)
Phnom Penh, Cambodia (NPG)
Siem Reap, Cambodia (REP)
Tokyo, Japan (HND, NZT)
Yangon, Myanmar (RGN)

Taxi from Bangkok -> ferry

Advantage: This method is convenient if you are traveling in a large group.

You can take a taxi from Bangkok directly to the pier. Taxi color may vary. These taxis can be ordered directly at the airport or at the hotel where you are staying. The cost of such a transfer is from 4 thousand rubles. Don't forget to bargain! After a certain amount of time and very tough bargaining, you can negotiate for 2,000 baht (2,000 rubles), but this happens extremely rarely.

If you are quoted a price of less than 2,000 rubles, keep in mind that something is wrong here. Bangkok taxi drivers are not always aware of where and what is located in their country. Therefore, they can happily tell you the price, and already on the road call someone and, having found out how long it takes to travel, drop you off.

You have arrived at the pier, you need to buy ferry tickets and sail to the island.

From Trat town to the pier

Since all roads mainly lead to the capital of the province of Trat, getting to the island will still have to wait. A taxi costs 30-100 baht per person. These are minibuses converted from a pickup truck. Accommodates up to 10 people. They go from Trat Bus Terminal and from the airport. About once every half hour. It's a twenty minute drive. You only need to know the name of the pier from which you are going to cross. Although the name is most likely needed only for those who are traveling not to Chang, but to the nearby islands. There, boats go to different places from different piers.

Ferry to Koh Chang

There are two piers on Koh Chang. Buses bring you to one pier and then to another. It makes no difference which pier the bus takes you to, so you shouldn’t even find out in advance. There are no differences in price. We went from Laem Ngob Pier, since most companies and buses go to this pier.

Please note that during low season ferries may run less frequently and may end earlier. There are also regular boats, but why are they needed if you can take a ferry? True, you can probably agree on delivery directly to the beach.

We hop on and sail to the island for about 45 minutes, enjoying the views from the deck of the ship.

I continue the topic of moving between Chang and Bangkok. , I already wrote, today I’ll tell you how to go in the opposite direction. In principle, if you read the article linked above, then you yourself will understand the entire algorithm of actions. Everything will be the same only in the opposite direction. I will dwell only on some of the nuances, and let all the basic information be in that article.

Koh Chang - Bangkok on your own

Let me remind you that Koh Chang Island is connected to the mainland via ferries that operate from two piers. Read more about ferries here -. Therefore, if you want to go to Bangkok on your own, then you will first need to take a minibus from your beach to the Koh Chang Ferry Pier or Center Point Ferry Pier, buy a ferry ticket, cross to the mainland, and buy a bus ticket at the mainland pier or minibus to Bangkok. Moreover, the minibuses can be different, some will go to, others to, and others to the Victory Monument metro station. You can do this entire journey without preparation, just get up early and go.

Price estimates will be approximately the following: from the beach 50-200 baht to the pier (depending on the distance of the beach), 80 baht by ferry, 300-400 baht by minibus or bus. Travel time from the mainland pier to Bangkok is about 5 hours by bus and 4 hours by minibus.

If for some reason there are no minibuses from the mainland piers, then you can take a minibus to the bus station in Trat, where you can buy a bus ticket to Bangkok, they run quite often, there are night buses, they come to the Ekkamai bus station.

In this case, the cost of travel will be as follows: from the beach 50-200 baht to the pier (depending on the distance of the beach), 80 baht by ferry, 50-100 baht by minibus to Trat, 250-300 baht by bus.

Koh Chang - Bangkok transfer

For me, this option is much more convenient at a very similar price. The easiest transfer option is to buy it at the nearest travel agency on Koh Chang, prices may vary, and arrival points in Bangkok may also vary. I noticed that if you ask for a transfer at your guesthouse, the price is slightly higher, apparently they charge for intermediary. The transfer can be different, both with and without transfers. They can take you to the pier, transfer, then put you on a bus or minibus after the ferry, or they can take you directly from the hotel in one minibus.

I liked the office called SWBtour, which is actually this http://www.bussuvarnabhumikohchang.com/. And the previous website, which is written on the glass of the office, does not work and apparently has not for a long time. Well, Thais don’t worry about such trifles. They have two offices on Koh Chang, one in Klong Son, between Koh Chanf Ferry Pier and White Sand Beach, and the other on Lonely Beach.

The cost of transfer from Klong Son Bus Station to Suvarnabhumi Airport is 400 baht. From White Sand Beach - 500 baht, from other beaches even more. The price includes a ferry ticket. In principle, no one bothers you to get to their office on your own by songthaew minibus.

There are only 3 minibuses per day (departure time - arrival time):
7.00 — 13.00
13.00 — 20.00
17.00 — 00.00

If there are too many people, then a bus is formed, at least that’s what they told me, and indeed, once I rode a bus instead of a minibus.

If you think this option is inconvenient, buy other transfers, but my advice is to go exactly to , if you need to go to Bangkok itself. The fact is that in any case you pass Suvarnabhumi, from which there is a direct metro line to the city center. It may well turn out that this will be faster than driving through the city in traffic jams.

Bus Station on Koh Chang is actually just a company office

The inscriptions are outdated, and the site is different, and the time is wrong

If upon arrival in Bangkok you need to stay somewhere for the night, you can find a hotel on RoomGuru, this is a service where it is convenient to compare hotel prices in different booking systems.

I have stayed in Bangkok many times and in different hotels. I will not provide links to all of my reviews, I will only provide a few. — convenient for stopping near the airport and metro, — good place to spend the night near Khao San, located in the center next to the park.

On the island of Koh Chang, then you, like me at one time, are faced with the question of choosing transport and route. So, how to get to Koh Chang island on your own?
Koh Chang is an island and can only be reached from the city of Trat. That is, in any case, no matter what corner of the country you get from, no matter what method of transportation you use, you will have to visit the city of Trat. And from the pier in the city of Trat, either a ferry or a boat will take you to the island.

Let's take a closer look at the option of how to get to Trat from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

From Bangkok Airport to Trat

If you arrived at Bangkok airport with the difficult-to-pronounce name Suvarnabhumi, then there are several options for how to get to Trat:

  • Taxi from the airport or city
  • Bus from the city
  • Minivan from the city
  • Airplane Bangok Trat
  • Minivan from the airport

Taxi

A taxi is the simplest, but also, of course, one of the most expensive options. You can order it either in the airport building, in the official pavilion (on the ground floor there will be a counter with the sign Public Taxi or you can ask any airport employee), or by going outside. If you decide to take a taxi on the street, bargain. On average, such a trip will cost about 3000-3500 baht and take 4-5 hours. For a family traveling with children, this option is quite acceptable. But not for us: it’s a little expensive, too simple, and I’m sure that “our people don’t take a taxi to the bakery shop” :).

Bus from the city

You can get to Trat by bus from one of the bus stations. This will be either Ekamai Bus Terminal (East Bus Terminal) or Mo Chit Bus Terminal (Northern Bus Terminal).

Ekamai Bus Terminal and Mo Chit Bus Terminal bus stations on the Bangkok metro map:

Ekkamai Bus Terminal is located next to the Ekkamai metro station of the same name, literally 100 meters from the exit. As soon as you exit the metro, you will immediately see the bus station building.

Mo Chit Bus Terminal is also located near the Mo Chit metro station. But here the distance is a little greater. You will have to either walk 20 minutes from the metro or take a taxi.

The bus itself will be large, quite spacious and comfortable. Depending on the carrier company, you will be given blankets and drinking water on board. As a rule, these buses are used by the local population, and it is not customary for them to express emotions violently. So you have every chance to get there in peace and quiet.

There is enough space for luggage here. The option is quite budget-friendly - about 270 baht, but the trip will take about 6 hours, since the bus will stop frequently. And be careful, many drivers do not get to the pier in Trat; they stop in the city itself, a kilometer or two from the pier (you can check this when purchasing a ticket). Even if you are unlucky and your bus does not go to the pier, then for a very reasonable price of 70 baht, the nice brotherhood of tuk-tukers will take you to the ferry without delay.

The bus option is good if you are not coming directly from the airport, but are staying in the city for a day or two. Immediately after a multi-hour flight, it’s difficult to go to the station, wait for the bus and sit in it for 6 hours straight. Moreover, there is still a ferry crossing ahead of you. I didn’t plan to stay in Bangkok, so this option seemed unsuitable to me.

Minivan from the city

There is an option to get to Trat by minivan from the city: from Victory Monument Square (it is located next to the metro station of the same name). There are pavilions around the monument selling tickets to anywhere in the country; you can buy a ticket to Trat for 300 baht one way. The journey will take approximately 5 hours.

This method is also only good when traveling from the city, and not from the airport. And in this case there is one nuance. There is very little space for luggage in minivans and it is possible that there is no free space for it except on your lap. I rejected this option because I wanted to rush straight from the airport to the island, without wandering around Bangkok.

Airplane Bangok Trat

You can travel from Bangkok airport by plane to Trat airport. Flight time is only an hour. The cost is about 3000 baht - a little expensive, but so fast!

But in reality it turned out that not everything is so simple. There are only three flights to Trat per day. It’s difficult to predict when you arrive. And while you are checking in your luggage, checking in for your flight, waiting for it, flying, standing in line to claim your luggage, getting from Trat airport to the pier, the bus has every chance of overtaking you. Expensive and everything also takes a long time.

By the way, Trat airport is very tiny.

This option, again, did not suit me. It's probably good for families with small children: I think they find running around the airport more interesting than being stuck in a car.

If you choose this method, you can take a taxi further from Trat airport to the pier; as a rule, they wait for the arrival of each plane. Or, to be extra sure, you can order a taxi in advance. You can ask to arrange a transfer to your hotel, this is also practiced.

Transfer to Koh Chang, ordered from any company, hotel or on Koasan Road

There is an option to order a transfer through one of many companies. A large number of them are located on Koasan Road (the main tourist street of Bangkok), or via the Internet. There are even Russian-language sites where you can make a similar order. In this case, the cost will vary on average from 400 to 900 baht per ticket for one person. The cost depends on the carrier company you choose and the range of services it provides. By agreement, you will be picked up from the airport or city. They will deliver you to the pier in Trat, or to the hotel on Chang, this must be agreed upon in advance.

I once used such a service, but it was from Chang to Bangkok, and not vice versa, since ordering a transfer to an arriving plane seemed unreliable to me. Planes have a bad habit of often being late, the flight can even be rescheduled, and such companies usually work on prepayment.

Minivan from the airport

And finally the option that seemed optimal to me. On the ground floor of the airport, next to gate number eight, there is a small kiosk that sells tickets to Chang. Not only, of course, in Chang, in other parts of the country too. It's not hard to recognize by its yellow sign. Just pay attention: this pavilion is located on the first floor! When you arrive, get your luggage and go downstairs, behind the glass doors you can see the road, cars, a complete illusion that you are on the first floor. But that's not true. You went down from the third floor to the second. You need even lower. The first time, having arrived and not realizing that I was above ground level, I made several circles around the second floor of the airport in search of this kiosk :-).

The cost of such a transfer is 600 baht per person, in my case, the cost of the ferry was already included in the ticket, I was supposed to be taken directly to the hotel on the island. I didn’t quite understand how this would happen, but since they promised to deliver, I’m ready to at least sail in a minivan. This is almost exactly what happened later.

This company has only a few flights to Chang: two or three in the morning. Moreover, these flights are not tied to the schedule, if there is one. The minivan is filled with passengers and departs when there are no empty seats left.

There is not much space for luggage here, but it is there. All the passengers on my flight had luggage, but the driver, apparently, has been playing Tetris with bags for years - he managed to pack everything very cleverly. I traveled around Thailand several times with similar companies. The first time, when boarding, they put a necklace of orchids on me, and several more times they put colored pieces of paper on me, like luggage. The first time I thought: “This is probably an expression of hospitality.” Subsequent times: "Bureaucracy". And now it seems to me that this is a way for the driver to mark his farangs (foreigners), so that, God forbid, he does not lose them during a stop. They are all alike - big, white and it is not clear what they are babbling in their own language.

Travel time is approximately five hours. There are two gas station stops along the way. Gas stations have everything you need: toilets, cafes, small shops, but no ATMs. The stop takes 10-20 minutes. The driver informs you in advance how long the stop lasts.

Through the entire city of Trat you are taken to the pier, then you slowly, in a series of other cars, drive on board directly in a minivan. The driver parks on the first floor of the ferry, and all passengers move to the second floor, where there is a small kiosk, benches and a stand with free maps.

At first glance, the ferry does not inspire much confidence: it looks like a huge rusty trough, but I have tested this vehicle many times, and it is quite reliable.

Having moored to the pier, the cars also drive ashore one after another and transport their passengers to their final destinations. That is, in this case, to the hotel you need. They will give you a ride directly to the hotel, and they will also help you carry your things to the reception.

From Trat to Koh Chang

If your ticket did not include the ferry, you will need to buy one at the pier. Here, in general, everything is clear; there are ticket offices right in front of the entrance to the pier. If you suddenly don’t see it and pass by, the employees still won’t let you through, they’ll show you the cash register. The cost is 80 baht per person one way, 120 baht in both directions, baggage, whatever it may be, is not paid. Children under 8 years old travel for free. Swim for about half an hour.

And yes, there are several piers in Trat, the main ones being Center Point Ferry Pier and Ko Chang Ferry Pier (or also called Ao Thammachat). There are a few more, but they don’t carry tourists; they are used mainly by the local population and for trips to other islands of the archipelago.

Personally, I advise you to go to Ko Chang Ferry Pier (Ao Thammachat). Ferries leave from here every half hour, starting at 6.30 am. From Center Point Ferry Pier ferries start running a little earlier, from 6.00, but the interval between them is longer - an hour.

Be careful, the last ferry leaves at 19.00, rarely stays until 19.30. There will be no further ferries until the morning. If you suddenly arrive at the pier after this time, there is still a chance to get to the island. There are private carriers that will take you on their boat, but it is not cheap, about 3,000 baht. Moreover, you will need to try to negotiate on the spot, or order such a service in advance from some company.

From Ko Chang Pier to the center

There are no and cannot be any problems with leaving the pier deep into the island. Tuk-tukers guard every ferry, with trained eyes they look for people who are not tanned enough and invite them aboard their “ship”. The cost will be around 50-80 baht per person, depending on the distance of your hotel. They know all the hotels by ear, so they shouldn’t confuse them and deliver them to the other side of the world. By the way, traveling by tuk-tuk on the roads of the island is very impressive. The road is made in such a way as to cause minimal harm to the jungle, the crazy ups and downs are no worse than on any attraction. And all this in a car like this.

On my first trip, I properly clung to the window while driving the car up the hill. I didn't want to end up on the asphalt. And you won’t believe it, but it’s two-story. Luggage is usually carried on top of the roof if there are many passengers. A couple of times, I saw the local population skating there. Of course, tourists are not accommodated on the roof.

In any case, no matter what transport you choose for your trip to Koh Chang, I am sure that this island will steal your heart just as it once stole mine!
