Two years ago, due to the refusal of Ukraine, which had no time for basketball, the EuroBasket had to be hastily held according to a new formula. The group tournament games took place in four countries, one of which was assigned to the playoffs. European basketball officials liked the idea so much that they decided to hold EuroBasket 2017 in the same way.

They left another know-how from two years ago: the group owners were allowed to take one team without drawing lots, which could attract fans to the stands. Kirilenko refused the mascot
The Swede was seated on the bench, and the Globetrotters stopped. The Russian team improved in defense, began to value the ball in attack, and Mozgov grabbed rebounds on the opponent’s backboard several times. By the last break, Bazarevich’s team led with a difference of only “+7”. Although she could have already removed all questions about the winner of the match.
The fan sector was even forced to adjust the instructions. Now the stands were chanting: “Let’s play calmly!” But what kind of peace is there when the Swede’s shots didn’t go well?! Five and a half minutes before the siren with the score 64:60, Bazarevich was again forced to take a timeout.
There was no calm. Vorontsevich's technical foul cost the Russian team dearly. In one attack, the British scored 5 points and reduced the gap to a minimum. At the start of EuroBasket, the Russian team beat one of the four hosts of the tournament - the Turks (76:73). On Saturday, Sergei Bazarevich's team will face an even more serious test - a match against the Serbs, silver medalists of the 2016 Olympics.
The promised sold-out crowd at the Fenerbahçe Arena did not happen. The upper tier was filled almost to capacity, and the most expensive tickets were still not sold out. In the sports palace, which can accommodate 10.5 thousand spectators, three small islands with Russian fans were formed. The group of six people stood out with their earflaps, very popular in Istanbul “+30”. The second was decorated with a girl in a kokoshnik, who attracted the attention of photographers. The third not only hung out the Russian tricolor, but also indicated its registration - Irkutsk.
The President of the RBF came to the game in a white T-shirt without identification marks. If someone didn’t know the Russian NBA star by sight, they would hardly classify Andrei Kirilenko as a VIP. It's different - the Turkish star of the overseas league Hido Turkoglu! In a formal suit, with a badge of the Turkish Basketball Federation on his lapel, the long-time leader of the national team, who had retired, did not even need any additional introduction.

Bazarevich surprised everyone

Most often the offense would simply deliver the ball to Brooklyn's center, and he would either put it in the basket or force the opponents to foul.
In the middle of the second quarter, for the first time in the match, the Russian team achieved a double-digit difference in the score - 25:15. Either our guys calmed down, or Mikhail Kulagin did not enter the game in the best way, but the Turks reduced the gap to “-6”. Bazarevich took a time-out in a timely manner, but Shved blundered in two attacks. Only on the third attempt did he put down his three. It’s just in time, because the hosts have already reduced the gap to “-3”.
However, it was felt that a turning point had come in the game. The Turks, who had caught the courage, increased the pressure, and with the score 31:27, Bazarevich returned Mozgov to the court. True, Shved was left to rest. The main sniper of the Russian team returned to the game with the score 36:30. In this segment, Nikita Kurbanov became the anti-hero. He first made an extremely offensive loss, and then fouled on a three-point shot. By the big break, the Russian team won only three points. In fact, the game started all over again.
How to stop Mozgov?
At the beginning of the third quarter, the teams seemed to be competing in the number of inaccurate passes and turnovers. The hosts grabbed Shved very tightly, but to do the same with Mozgov, they needed a couple of other Mozgovs. The Serbian national team has such guys, but the Turks have a huge problem with centers. Due to maximum concentration and dedication, the hosts did not let the Russian team get ahead. In the 26th minute, what Fenerbahçe Arena dreamed of happened: the home team equalized the score. Bazarevich immediately took a time out and replaced Shved, who was too carried away by individual actions.
Only the Turks had already caught the courage, and the audience began to scream so loudly that the stands rocked. An attempt to put pressure on the judges ended in a technical foul on the Turkish bench and four points gained by the Russian team in one attack. And in the last seconds of the quarter, the referees were not afraid to punish the hosts with a foul on Shved during a three-point shot. Before the final quarter our lead was 55:51.
The Turks continued to press on the verge of a foul, Shved missed from awkward positions, and they failed to get the ball to Mozgov. A valid ending loomed ahead. Bazarevich again tried to play with a light five, releasing Vorontsevich and Antonov in the “big” positions, but there was no turning point. Moreover, the Turkish team took the lead - 58:57. After that, both teams took turns taking the lead until the very end.
It began two minutes before the end of the fourth quarter, with the score tied, with an unprepared long-range throw from Shved. Mozgov then scored one of two free throws. At -1, the Turkish coach took his first time out. Nothing went well for the Russian team in attack. It’s good that the hosts didn’t succeed either. At just the right moment, Shved scored a three. Moreover, ours managed to defend ourselves. The Turks were forced to foul Vitaly Fridzon 12 seconds before the siren. An experienced sniper does not miss in such situations. With a fairly comfortable six-point lead, all that was left was to avoid making mistakes.
Fridzon committed this by fouling Cedi Osman's three-point shot. It's good that the guy playing in the NBA made one miss from the free throw line. But Vitaly redeemed himself, scoring two out of two. Osman's "three" no longer saved the hosts. The Russian national team started EuroBasket with a victory!
