Mandatory tourist taxes and hotel deposits in the UAE. Mandatory tourist taxes and deposits in UAE hotels Deposits in UAE hotels

When planning a vacation in the UAE, it is important to remember that there are unusual and often unexpected expenses inherent in this destination. After the usual “All Inclusive” Turkey and Tunisia, it’s strange for tourists to pay for something beyond the paid trip.

Some newbie travel agents completely forget to mention/simply don’t know about these expenses. At least, this is how I interpret the shock, tears and even hysterics of tourists at the reception upon check-in.

Well, how else should you react to the fact that upon check-in you are asked to pay some kind of tax and a deposit in an amount that often reaches half of the money you took with you? In general, we understand what the tax is and when hotel deposits can be waived.

In this article we look at:

Tourist tax in the UAE

A tourist tax is levied on every foreign guest staying in hotels or apartments in Ras Al Khaimah, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Other Emirates do not yet have this tax. This is a mandatory fee and cannot be waived.

The amount of tax depends on a combination of a number of parameters:

  • hotel category (number of “stars”);
  • number of nights of stay;
  • number of rooms in a room or apartment.

The table shows the current tax amounts per night for one-room number:

Hotel category Dubai Ras Al Khaimah Abu Dhabi
Hotels 5* and above 20 AED ($5.5) 20 AED ($5.5) 10 AED ($2.7)
Hotels 4* 15 AED ($4.1) 15 AED ($4.1) 10 AED ($2.7)
Hotels 3* 10 AED ($2.7) 10 AED ($2.7) 10 AED ($2.7)
Hotels 2* 11 AED ($2.7) 10 AED ($2.7) 10 AED ($2.7)
Hotels 1* 7 AED ($1.9) 7 AED ($1.9) 10 AED ($2.7)
Deluxe Apartment 20 AED ($5.5) 15 AED ($4.1) -
Superior Apartment 15 AED ($4.1) 15 AED ($4.1) -
Standard Apartment 10 AED ($2.7) 10 AED ($2.7) -

Please note that the final tax amount depends not only on the star rating, but also on the number of bedrooms! That is why I indicated prices with an emphasis on a one-room suite!

That is, if you are going to Dubai for a week and booked a 5* hotel room with two rooms, you will pay: 20AED x 2 bedrooms x 7 nights = 280 AED. However, the number of people in the room does not affect the amount of tax.

The tax is paid upon arrival or departure from the hotel/apartment in cash or by credit card, if such a payment method is provided at the hotel.

For refusal to pay, hotel employees have every right to call the tourist police, as well as write off this money from a bank card if the tourist used it to make a deposit for their stay. In general, be careful and factor this expense into your travel budget while still at home.

UAE hotel deposits

The deposit is a kind of “insurance” for the hotel against possible damage that residents may cause during their vacation. Its purpose is compensation for damaged furniture, lost towels, etc., as well as for the convenience of paying guests for hotel services.

With a paid deposit, the guest will not have to constantly carry a wallet to pay for a cup of coffee in a restaurant or a massage in a spa. The cost of the service provided will simply be written down in his name and written off from the deposit upon eviction. Comfortable!

Deposits are usually made in 4* and 5* hotels, however, 3* hotels may also require it. The deposit amount depends on the hotel category and is calculated in two ways:

  • amount per room per day;
  • amount for the entire period of stay.

For example, a deposit in a 5* hotel in Dubai Al Qasr – Madinat Jumeirah 5* will cost $140 US per night, and in a Tamani Hotel 4* apartment – $410 US per week. In fact, these numbers are always approximate. Often the reception will tell you the amounts are lower, but you need to be prepared to pay the “official cost”.

If you pay the deposit in cash in dollars, it will be returned on the day of check-out in Dirhams at the hotel exchange rate on the day of check-out! This is inconvenient - there is nowhere to spend them before departure. At the airport you can exchange them back into USD.

You can also make a deposit by credit card. In such cases, I always recommend having a credit card with you. MAESTRO, VISA, MASTERCARD are accepted. The required amount will be blocked until eviction. If the deposit is not spent on hotel services, the entire amount will be returned within a month after check-out.

Is it possible not to pay the deposit?

Unlike the tourist tax, you can try to refuse to pay the deposit. Some hotels even give the guest a choice: to pay or not.

If a tourist does not want to pay a deposit, then it is completely transferred to cash at the time the service is provided, and upon departure. At the same time, the minibar is sealed, external telephone communications and pay television channels are blocked.

In inexpensive hotels in Sharjah, you can give a foreign passport as a deposit instead of money. I can’t answer how safe it is. There were no precedents, but still.

Before traveling to the Emirates, set aside the money needed for taxes and deposits in advance. Tax is required to be paid. There is no point in expecting that the deposit amount will be reduced or even removed altogether. It’s better to prepare in advance than to worry too much later.

Well, that seems to be all! If you have questions, write in the comments, we’ll sort it out.

The Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah introduces a new tax for tourists

Tour operators comment on whether the new accommodation tax, which tourists will begin paying from November 1, will affect demand for resorts in Ras al-Khaimah

The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, located in the northern UAE, has announced the introduction of a new tax for tourists. The fee will be collected from November 1, reports the TurProfi portal.

Tourists staying in hotels and apartments in the emirate will now pay additional fees depending on the type of accommodation.

So, for a 24-hour stay in a 5* hotel you will have to pay an additional 20 AED (about $5.5). Per night in a 4* hotel there is a fee of 15 AED, 3* and 2* - 10 AED, 1* - 7 AED. The new rule also applies to all bookings made after October 7th.

The tourist tax will be charged upon check-out and will appear as a separate line item on the invoice.

Meanwhile, our experts hope that the new tax will not affect demand in the direction.

« Any increase in price, of course, does not lead to positive dynamics, but we hope that the introduction of a tourist tax will not reduce sales, because they are going well - We are pleased with the results of the summer, bookings for the winter are actively underway, - Oksana Ivanchenkova, Deputy General Director for Development of Space Travel, told us. - Ras al-Khaimah is popular among Russian tourists, since almost all hotels in the emirate operate on an all inclusive system.

As for the prices for holidays in Ras al-Khaimah, they are significantly inferior to holidays, for example, in Jumeirah.”

“True, given the fact that in Ras al-Khaimah almost all hotels are 5*, the tax that a tourist will have to pay for staying in a hotel will be significant.

But again, the tourist tax is a global practice. Such taxes are introduced in many European countries. So the UAE first introduced a tax in Dubai, now in Ras al-Khaimah, and, probably, guests of the emirate of Abu Dhabi will soon have to pay the tax", the expert added.

“I don’t think the tourist tax will have a negative impact on demand. For UAE connoisseurs, a tax of 20 dirhams per day will not matter,- noted, in turn, Natalya Dalbinova, head of the sales department of the Oriental Discovery company " - In addition, in many countries of the world, travelers have to deal with such tourist taxes, and we have never encountered their dissatisfaction with this matter.

At the same time, of course, it would be more convenient if this amount was immediately included in the package, rather than paid separately at the hotel.”

« Resort fees behind accommodation introduced V various countries And regions. WITH one sides, Certainly, action tourist authorities It's clear And commendable, With another sides, on wallet tourists entrusted additional, - Larisa Akhanova, PR director of the tour operator TEZ Tour, noted in a conversation with us. - But Russian tourists This innovation Not will scare away. If tourist wants go, That He will go.

Them more, What at us valid promotion - visa V present on races With 10 October By 10 May And This will help level out price And expenses".

As the expert added, "This emirate positioned, How resort For family recreation (How steam , So And children) .
