Story

The currency of Lebanon is the Lebanese pound. This currency is also called the "livre" or "Lebanese lira". Previously, the currency was divisible and equal to 100 piastres, but due to the too low value of the unit of exchange, it has now been abandoned. At a time when Lebanon, along with Syria, was part of the Ottoman Empire, the country used the Turkish pound as its currency. In 1918, the empire collapsed, and the Turkish pound was replaced by its Egyptian counterpart. Thus, the Egyptian pound was pegged to the pound sterling. Türkiye was defeated in the First World War, and after these events Lebanon went to France as part of the Syrian mandate. At the same time, the Syrian pound began to be used on the territory of the state, and the French pound was used as a parallel currency. This continued until 1941. Two years later, the country will gain independence and enter into a monetary agreement with the French authorities on the use of that country's franc. In another five years, a new monetary reform will be carried out in Lebanon, which will return the Lebanese pound. Currently in circulation are coins of five denominations and banknotes of six denominations (from 1,000 to 100,000) of the Lebanese pound. The issuing bank for the currency is the Bank of Lebanon. In addition to the Lebanese pound, American dollars and euros are accepted for payment in the country. If you need local money, you can exchange it almost anywhere, including from private money changers.

Banknotes.

The current currency of Lebanon is called the pound. This monetary unit is little known outside the country. It is not in great demand among traders. But tourists who want to come to Lebanon need to know about the Lebanese pound.

Description

The international code designation consists of three letters LBP. Previously, one Lebanese pound contained 100 piastres, but due to high inflation rates this division had to be abandoned. The Bank of Lebanon issues banknotes.

Currently, metal coins in denominations of 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 pounds are in circulation throughout the country. Paper notes in denominations of 1000, 5000, 10 thousand, 20 thousand, 50 thousand and 100 thousand pounds are also widely used.

Coins are made from nickel, brass and bronze. The 25-pound coin is minted from nickel-plated steel. The inscriptions on all money in the country are printed in Arabic; previously they were duplicated in French, since the state was under the patronage of France for several decades.

History of the currency of Lebanon

During the period when the country was part of the Ottoman Empire, the Turkish pound was used as a means of payment. After the defeat of the Ottomans in World War I and the collapse of the empire in 1918, Lebanon ceded to France. The country began to use the French pound as a secondary state currency.

In 1943, the Middle Eastern country gained independence from France. The government of the new republic agreed with the leadership of the former metropolis on the use of the French franc. Five years later, as a result of financial reform, the Lebanese pound was introduced into circulation. This monetary unit is still used throughout the state.

Exchange rate of the Lebanese pound to the ruble and other currencies

The Lebanese currency is one of the cheapest in the world. Moreover, it continues to lose value due to problems in the economy. As of October 7, 2018, the Lebanese currency exchange rate to the ruble is approximately 0.04. That is, for one pound you can get about 4 kopecks. One ruble contains almost 23 LBP.

When compared to the American dollar, the situation is even more dire. One USD contains approximately one and a half thousand LBP. That is, for one pound they give about 0.0006 dollars.

The situation is similar with other world currencies: the euro, British pounds.

Exchange transactions and non-cash payments

Lebanon is a fairly modern country, so there are no particular problems with cashless payments. Cards are accepted in large stores, restaurants, hotels and shopping centers. However, it will be more difficult to pay by bank transfer at the city market, in a taxi or in street eateries. You need to prepare enough cash.

Finding an ATM to withdraw money in a big city is not difficult. But outside of tourist routes it is almost impossible to do this.

It is best to come to the country with American dollars or euros. It will be more difficult to change other banknotes. Some banks and exchangers work with currencies of neighboring Arab countries. It is not advisable to take rubles with you, since it is extremely difficult to find a place where they will exchange Russian currency for you. There is also no point in coming with money from other countries of the world, for example, yuan or Canadian dollars, since local banks and exchange offices do not work with them. Even if you manage to find a place where you can exchange money that is rare for this country, the commission for such an operation will be very high.

Conclusion

Lebanon's currency is often referred to as the lira or livre, by analogy with neighboring Turkey. Historical factors also played a role in this. Despite the fact that the state is quite stable economically, the war in neighboring Syria has a strong impact on the situation in Lebanon. In particular, because of this, the exchange rate of the national currency is declining at a rapid pace.

The lack of strong industry and popularity among tourists also affects here. The government of the country and big business are doing everything possible to strengthen the financial situation of the state. One of the priority areas is tourism, which can have a beneficial effect on the value of the official currency of the republic and strengthen it.

Excerpt characterizing the Lebanese pound

- Well, let's go? – she looked at me carefully and I realized that she was asking me to “put” my “protection” on them.
Stella was the first to stick her red head out...
- Nobody! – she was delighted. - Wow, what a horror this is!..
Of course, I couldn’t stand it and climbed after her. There really was a real “nightmare”!.. Next to our strange “place of imprisonment”, in a completely incomprehensible way, human beings were hanging in “bundles” upside down... They were suspended by their legs, and created a kind of inverted bouquet .
We came closer - none of the people showed signs of life...
– They are completely “pumped out”! – Stella was horrified. – They don’t even have a drop of vitality left!.. That’s it, let’s run away!!!
We rushed as hard as we could, somewhere to the side, absolutely not knowing where we were running, just to get away from all this blood-freezing horror... Without even thinking that we might get into the same thing again, or even worse, horror...
Suddenly it suddenly became dark. Blue-black clouds rushed across the sky, as if driven by a strong wind, although there was no wind yet. In the depths of the black clouds, dazzling lightning blazed, the mountain peaks blazed with a red glow... Sometimes the swollen clouds burst against the evil peaks and dark brown water poured out of them like a waterfall. This whole terrible picture was reminiscent of the most terrible of the terrible, a nightmare....
– Daddy, darling, I’m so scared! – the boy squealed subtly, having forgotten his former belligerence.
Suddenly one of the clouds “broke” and a blindingly bright light blazed out of it. And in this light, in a sparkling cocoon, was approaching the figure of a very thin young man, with a face as sharp as a knife blade. Everything around him shone and glowed, from this light the black clouds “melted”, turning into dirty, black rags.
- Wow! – Stella shouted joyfully. – How does he do this?!
- Do you know him? – I was incredibly surprised, but Stella shook her head negatively.
The young man sat down next to us on the ground and, smiling affectionately, asked:
- Why are you here? This is not your place.
– We know, we were just trying to get to the top! – joyful Stella was already chirping at the top of her lungs. – Will you help us get back up?.. We definitely need to get home quickly! Otherwise, the grandmothers are waiting for us there, and they are also waiting for them, but different ones.
Meanwhile, for some reason, the young man looked at me very carefully and seriously. He had a strange, piercing gaze, which for some reason made me feel awkward.
-What are you doing here, girl? – he asked softly. - How did you manage to get here?
- We were just walking. – I answered honestly. - And so they were looking for them. – Smiling at the “foundlings”, she pointed at them with her hand.
– But you’re alive, aren’t you? – the savior could not calm down.
– Yes, but I’ve been here more than once. – I answered calmly.
- Oh, not here, but “above”! – my friend corrected me, laughing. “We definitely wouldn’t come back here, would we?”
“Yes, I think this will be enough for a long time... At least for me...” I shuddered from the recent memories.
- You must leave here. “The young man said again softly, but more insistently. - Now.
A sparkling “path” stretched from him and ran straight into the luminous tunnel. We were literally pulled in without even having time to take a single step, and after a moment we found ourselves in the same transparent world in which we found our round Leah and her mother.
- Mom, mommy, daddy is back! And Great too!.. - little Leah rolled head over heels towards us, tightly clutching the red dragon to her chest.. Her round little face shone like the sun, and she herself, unable to contain her wild happiness, rushed to her dad and, hanging on him neck, squealing with delight.
I was happy for this family that had found each other, and a little sad for all my dead “guests” who came on earth for help, who could no longer hug each other as joyfully, since they did not belong to the same worlds.. .
- Oh, daddy, here you are! I thought you were missing! And you took it and found it! That's good! – the radiant little girl squealed with happiness.
Suddenly a cloud flew over her happy face, and it became very sad... And in a completely different voice the little girl turned to Stella:
– Dear girls, thank you for dad! And for my brother, of course! Are you going to leave now? Will you come back someday? Here's your little dragon, please! He was very good, and he loved me very, very much... - it seemed that right now poor Leah would burst into tears, so badly she wanted to hold this cute marvelous dragon just a little longer!.. And he was about to be taken away and there will be no more...
– Do you want him to stay with you some more? And when we return, will you give it back to us? – Stella took pity on the little girl.
Leah was at first stunned by the unexpected happiness that had fallen on her, and then, unable to say anything, she nodded her head so strongly that it almost threatened to fall off...
Having said goodbye to the joyful family, we moved on.
It was incredibly pleasant to feel safe again, to see the same joyful light filling everything around, and not be afraid of being unexpectedly grabbed by some kind of terrible nightmare...
- Do you want to take another walk? – Stella asked in a completely fresh voice.
The temptation, of course, was great, but I was already so tired that even if the greatest miracle on earth seemed to me now, I probably wouldn’t be able to truly enjoy it...
