Just 25 km from Almaty, at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters, is the wonderful Kazakh ski resort Chimbulak. The ski resort is equipped with double chairlifts, single chairlifts and rope tows, as well as a free towing lift. For professionals and extreme sports enthusiasts, there is the opportunity to take a four-seater cable car up to the Talgar Pass from a height of 2260 m to 3163 m and ride along a steep track prepared by Ratrak.

In general, Shymbulak is famous for its variety of slopes, which is good for recreation by any company, with different levels of skiers. On the Shymbulak website the trails are described as follows: “...a variety of routes, including gentle and soft slopes for beginners, long runs for advanced skiers, FIS trails for downhill, wild valleys with untouched snow and a halfpipe for snowboarders, extreme turns for pro, special mogul track.”

For dummies like me, there is a ski school on Shymbulak. You can take a group lesson lasting an hour, 2.5 or 5 hours, or choose an instructor for individual lessons for 1.5, 2.5 or 5 hours.

The price of a group lesson for 2.5 hours is approximately 1600 rubles, a similar private lesson is 2800 rubles.

You can come to Shymbulak not for the sake of skiing. A trip here can be a real adventure, an excursion from Almaty. First I recommend getting to Medeu and going ice skating. Then take the cable car, which will take you to Chimbulak. The cable car offers such views that words cannot describe.

Upstairs you can sit in one of the restaurants and listen to live music.

Just take a walk, get some fresh air, and generally have a good time.

P.S. In 2013, the ski season was planned to open on November 30, but this date was postponed because there was still little snow and the cannons did not have time to generate the required amount of artificial snow.

There are many places in neighboring countries where you can relax inexpensively both in winter and summer. One of these destinations is Kazakhstan. It differs from Russia in cheap internal railway transport, therefore, from any of its border parts you can easily reach Almaty, and the Chimbulak ski resort is located next to it. It is suitable for visiting in all seasons, but is especially good in winter.

Shymbulak is located 30 kilometers from the city; in fact, the residents of Almaty are lucky to have a ski resort in the suburban area. From the new capital - Astana, it is 1230 kilometers away, Bishkek is closer, less than 300 kilometers away, so a visit to the ski resort can be combined with a visit to Kyrgyzstan, where there are also many beautiful places in the mountains. It is located quite far from Russia, to the nearest regional centers - Barnaul and Novosibirsk, the distance is 1600 and 1800 kilometers, respectively. Even to the Chinese city of Urumqi it’s less to travel, 900 kilometers.

Climate

The ski season in Shymbulak lasts 5.5 months, from mid-November to early April, and in some years even longer. Snow cover reaches 1.8 meters. In summer, average temperatures are 20 degrees, and in winter - minus 7. Temperatures depend on the specific altitude and often change due to the mountainous terrain. In December the average daytime value is minus 1.4 and -7.3 at night, January and February are even colder, minus 10 at night and minus 3 in winter. In July, daytime temperatures reach 25 degrees, and at night + 15.

How to get there

First you need to get into . Airplanes fly to it from different cities, so you can fly in winter not only from Novosibirsk, but also from Istanbul or Bangkok. In addition, intercity buses run to Almaty from different cities of Kazakhstan and even from Russia, but the latter often transport guest workers to Kyrgyzstan, so it is unlikely that it will be convenient to get there. There are inexpensive buses and taxis from the airport to the city.

In Almaty, you need to transfer to bus No. 12 (stop “Dostyk”), which departs from there from 7 a.m. to midnight; it will take you to a stop near the “Medeu” sports complex. From there you can walk to Shymbulak in 1.5 hours. It’s a pleasant walk through a picturesque area, but the road leads uphill, so it’s better to take it down to the bus and take the cable car up. A one-way trip will cost 300 rubles, and a round trip – 500.

From Bishkek, where the main airport of Kyrgyzstan is located, there are buses to Almaty, border checks are quick, the drive takes 5-6 hours, there is one stop along the way at a cafe with a toilet. A ticket costs around 500 rubles.

Near Shymbulak you can travel on foot, this is useful to get some fresh air and explore the surroundings. Moving around the ski resort is carried out using cable car gondolas. For example, for 500 rubles you can ride on “Combi-1” + “Combi-2” (40% discount for children), and 700 rubles will cost a comprehensive ticket from “Medeu” to Chimbulak with the opportunity to ride on both “Combi”.

On weekdays, disabled people and people under 5 and over 65 can ride for free.
The cable car cabins are modern, some of them have a transparent bottom, which provides excellent visibility during the ride. A ticket to such a booth costs 100 rubles more.

Where to stay

At the ski resort itself, the choice of places to stay overnight is limited. There is a 4* hotel “Chimbulak”. From there it is only 100 meters to the ski lifts; the altitude at that point is 2200 meters. It accommodates 114 guests, and the fund consists of 55 rooms of five types, from regular to super-suites.
In addition, there are the following places to stay nearby:

• “House in the Mountains”;
• "SNeG";
• “Namaste shalle.”

The city of Almaty itself is also suitable for an overnight stay, where there are many options in different price categories. In hostels a night can cost from 400 rubles, in hotels from 1000. Most places to stay for the night are located from the Almaty-2 station to the Samal-3 area. This is an interesting area. Where there is beautiful architecture, many attractions and public transport, there are several metro stations.

There are catering points at the cable car terminal station, but there is not much variety in food there. There are also hotel restaurants, for example, at “SNeG” you can have breakfast with cottage cheese with berries or pancakes for 300-400 rubles. Lunch dishes can cost 500-600 rubles, for example, salad with smoked horse meat or herring with potatoes.

Above the hotel zone there is a bar “3200”, so it is called in honor of the height where it was built. Climbers can drink herbal tea and eat homemade cookies. Coffee, French fries and cookies - 100 rubles per serving, alcohol - 200, branded tea - 200 rubles per 0.3 liter cup.

The ski resort is located near Almaty, where there are many catering places. There are reputable restaurants, for example, “Alasha”, where they offer a variety of dishes, including those with horse meat, on average, from 500 rubles per serving.

There are a variety of cafes in the city, for example, Georgian cuisine is represented by the establishment “Khachapuri Khinkalievich”, they have many dishes for 200-300 rubles per serving.
In numerous canteens, which are often open only on weekdays, you can eat a set lunch for 200 rubles.

So, in Almaty, catering establishments are varied; not only Kazakh, but also Russian, Chinese, Italian and other cuisines are represented in the city.

Skiing (piste, slopes, lifts)

The ski area on Chimbulak ranges from 2200 to 3100 meters. The maximum slope slope is 45 degrees, and the total skiable area is 99 acres. There are only 8 trails, one of them is easy (green), and the rest are difficult (blue, red, black), there are five of them. The yellow track is for balloon riding, and the purple track is for snowboarding.

The total length of all tracks is 3600 meters. A special feature of this resort is the variety of routes, there are both wild trails and downhill trails. One ride on the rope tow costs from 60 rubles, and a day pass costs 1,100 on weekends and about 2,000 on weekdays. Children are twice cheaper.

In addition to four lines of the cable car, Shymbulak has seven drag lifts, a free towing lift and a baby lift.

An adult ski pass for the new “Left Talgar” route costs 800 rubles. A day ski pass from 9 am to 5 pm costs 1,300 rubles for adults and 600 for children on weekends and 900 and 500 on weekdays. A 4-hour subscription costs 1,100 rubles for adults and 500 for children on weekends and 800 and 400 on weekdays. Night skiing will cost 800 for adults and 400 for children, regardless of the day of the week.

Equipment rental

Equipment rental is carried out with a passport and a “Chimbulak” plastic card. A set of skis and a snowboard will cost about 1,000 rubles, and if just one, then 600. Renting boots without skis and a snowboard costs 400 rubles. Sports skis are more expensive, from 1,400 rubles, poles - 200, and a helmet - 300.

If you want to have fun, then you need to go to Almaty, for example, to swim in the pool of one of the water parks: Hawaii, the Eighth Wonder of the World and Family Park. The first one is interesting as an all-season water park in Central Asia. There are also swimming pools and clubs in the city. In an hour from Almaty you can get to Kapshagai, where there is not only a recreation area with beaches, but also the largest gambling zone in the country.

City beaches are located on the banks of the Big Almaty Canal, swimming in them is free. But this is true for those who vacation here in the summer.

Things to do with children

Children should enjoy a ride on the cable car, as well as a walk through the parks of Almaty, and if their age allows, they can also go skiing. For children, the resort has an entertainment room called Kids Lab, which is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On its territory there is a fortress, an art zone, a Lego zone, game consoles, a room for sleeping and relaxing, and a team of animators. In winter, the children's town offers sledding and balloon rides.

Almaty has a reputation as the southern capital of Kazakhstan, so shopping here is one of the best in the country. There are enough shopping centers in the city, for example, the Ramstore chain. The assortment is partially reminiscent of Russian and there are enough goods from Russia. You can buy and try products that are under sanctions in Russia; they are still brought here.

In Kazakhstan, they make their own chocolate and various sweets under the Rakhat brand; they also produce cognac and other alcoholic beverages. Non-food products you can buy are:

• Kazakh peoples;
• Flasks for water and kumiss;
• Carpets;
• Robes, skullcaps and caps;
• Miniatures, for example, of the Baiterek monument, which stands in Astana;

In terms of attractions, the most interesting thing will be a walking tour of Almaty. This is the second most interesting city in Kazakhstan, and in some ways the first, since the Stalinist Empire style, for example, is better preserved here than in Astana.
It is useful to visit museums to learn more about the history and culture of Kazakhstan:

• Central Museum of Kazakhstan. An analogue of the historical museum on Red Square, only the building is stylized as a yurt. You can get acquainted with the exhibition for several hours; before the capital was moved, it was the main museum of the country.
• Museum of Art.
• Geological Museum. It is located not far from the stop where buses go to “Medeu”; it’s worth stopping by along the way, because the depths of Kazakhstan are rich in minerals.
• Museum of Kazakh musical instruments.
• Literary Museum.
• Two museums of the leader of the Kazakh SSR of the 1950-1980s D. Kunaev: in his former apartment and opposite the park named after him.
• Archaeological in the building of the Academy of Sciences. Interesting and free.

If you don’t want to go to museums, you can take a ride on the cable car to Kok-Tobe Park (200 rubles one way). It is a good place for a family holiday. On the territory there are various attractions, a Ferris wheel, a zoo and other activities: a climbing wall, an exotarium, a crossbow and archery shooting range, and Segway rental. There are also places for a photo shoot, for example, an observation deck overlooking Almaty and an unexpected monument to the Beatles, who never toured in Kazakhstan even after the breakup of the group.

In the summer you won’t be able to ski, but you can take a walk, stretch your legs, take a ride on the cable car with your camera and admire the surroundings.

There are many green areas and parks in the center of Almaty. The most interesting, perhaps, is the Central Park of Culture and Culture, next to which there is an ethnic cafe and a zoo.

It’s worth going to the Botanical Garden near the National University and just strolling through the photogenic central part of the city, where most of the streets intersect at right angles, so it’s difficult to get lost. There are many monuments in Almaty, from the Independence Monument (which depicts different periods of Kazakhstan's history) to Viktor Tsoi and a man with a newspaper on a bench.

Most of the time in the summer will be spent on trekking. There are the following walking routes near Almaty:

• Kok-Zhailau. Beautiful green pasture, but need to be careful in early summer due to tick activity;
• Furmanov Peak, its height is about 3000 meters, some physical training is required to climb;

What else you need to know about vacation

You can relax in Chimbulak no worse than in Russia. Kazakhstan cannot be called an expensive country; there are no problems with communication in Russian. You don’t need a foreign passport; you are allowed into the country with an ordinary Russian one. A trip to Chimbulak can be combined with a visit to neighboring Kyrgyzstan. It’s also interesting to compare Almaty and Bishkek, Chimbulak and Ala-Archa.

The endless Kazakh steppes are known far beyond its borders and sometimes overshadow the fact that there are majestic mountains there, which are especially popular not only among Kazakh skiers, but also among athletes from other countries, including Russia. High mountain trails, the possibility of round-the-clock skiing and simply beautiful landscapes of mountainous Kazakhstan appeal to ordinary vacationers, but still Shymbulak, as the locals call it, never ceases to be a training base for many professional athletes, which is worth taking into account when going there on vacation.

The Chimbulak ski resort is a fairly large complex that includes 8 certified and several “unofficial” trails of varying difficulty: from easy “green” routes to “black” routes of increased difficulty. The elevation difference on Shymbulak is significant - up to 900 meters. There is a slalom and downhill run of 1.5 and 3.5 kilometers in length, respectively.

According to markings, Shymbulak routes can be divided into the following groups:

• "green" routes for beginners - “Magic Carpet” and “Polar Bear”, starting at the foot of large slopes in the immediate vicinity of the Shymbulak base station;
• "blue" tracks for more experienced skiers - “Uncle Bogdanovich”, “Sunny Valley”, “Green Polyana”, operating between the stations Left Talgar and Talgar Pass. This group also includes the connecting stations Conus and the Middle technical route “Trail Cone” and Professor’s Descent;
• "red" routes for experienced skiers - the “Olympic” route running from the Konus station and the “Asiada”, “Truba” and “Field of Miracles” routes starting from the Middle Station. The highest mountain route of the Talgar resort, starting at an altitude of more than 3 kilometers above sea level, is also classified as red;
• "black" routes for professionals - “Crest”, “Sukhoi Log” and “Crest Twenty”.

Due to the constant development of the resort area, the slopes change periodically, but long-time visitors to this ski resort know very well where and on which lift they can get, and there are route maps on the territory of the complex to help newcomers.

In addition to ski slopes, Shymbulak also has slopes for snowboarders.

The lower routes are processed by snowcats. Since most of the routes are illuminated, you can ski at the resort until 11 pm - for this purpose, taking into account weather conditions, the complex specially organizes evening skiing.

All slopes of Shymbulak can be reached by ski lifts. From Shymbulak base station they go two chairlift routes- to the Middle Station and to the Cone station. Runs from the middle station drag lift, delivering visitors to the complex to its highest point. Between the upper stations and near the training route there are ski lift tracks like baby-lift.

Prices and services

This resort, like many similar centers, uses a system of ski passes and lift passes. The subscription can be taken for 4 hours, daily or weekly.

Lift passes are only issued if you have a ski pass. Therefore, it is necessary to purchase it first. Most skiers vacationing at this resort warn beginners that Shymbulak has a very interesting system for selling passes: ski passes are purchased by visitors and the deposit for them, as a rule, is not returned. The cost of a ski pass is approximately 1500 tenge.

There is a ski school on the territory of Shymbulak, where those interested can receive individual or group lessons. Their cost, as at other resorts, can hardly be called low: an adult will have to pay 8,000 tenge for 2 hours of group training, 16,000 for individual 2 hours. For children, the price is slightly lower - 7 and 14 thousand tenge, respectively.

For those who come to the resort without their own personal equipment, we can recommend local equipment rental. The prices, again, again, are not small, but in comparison with European resorts they are quite acceptable. An adult standard ski set will cost about 5,000 tenge, a child's (under 15 years old) - about 3,000 tenge.

In Shymbulak there is a system of fairly spacious storage rooms, which allows even groups of vacationers to leave things there. This is very convenient when the whole family or a large group come to ride.

Tourist and family holidays

Since the Chimbulak ski resort is located on the territory of the tract of the same name, which is part of the territory of the Ile-Alatau Park, it is not surprising that tourists come here quite actively. The most beautiful places along which the tourist routes lie rarely leave anyone indifferent. Directly from the base, trips are planned to the Almaty Gorge and to the Tien Shan glaciers. Of course, such trips are carried out mainly in the warm season.

Summer entertainment also includes extreme bungee jumping in a mountaineering park near Chimbulak.

In winter, the main entertainment is skiing, snowboarding and skating. For the latter, a special high-mountain skating rink “Medeo” has been organized. It is open only on weekends, but until 10 pm, which allows especially active vacationers to ski there even after the ski slopes are closed for the night.

Additional entertainment directly in Shymbulak includes ice-skating and balloon riding. Children will have fun in a specially organized children's playground on the territory of the complex.

How to get to the Chimbulak resort

You need to buy train tickets to Almaty, but the journey is not close. The Moscow-Almaty train travels for more than 3 days. Citizens of Russia and the CIS do not require a visa.

As noted earlier, Chimbulak is located 25 kilometers from Almaty, so you can get to it either on your own, moving towards the Medeo skating rink, or by regular bus No. 6, going from Almaty directly from the Kazakhstan Hotel to the skating rink.

From Medeo, the best route option is the gondola lift, as it operates in any weather, while the road to Chimbulak may be closed due to snow.

The purpose of our trip to Kazakhstan was mainly skiing. Of all the ski resorts in Kazakhstan, we chose the most popular - Chimbulak. The Chimbulak ski resort is located in the Trans-Ili Alatau gorge, 25 km from the city of Almaty.

The ski slopes are served by two double chairlifts, a single chairlift and a rope tow. The ski lifts start from the high-mountain skating rink Medeo and take you to the Chimbulak resort at an altitude of 2260 m above sea level. The tracks are different, mostly red. At the first station where you go up from Medeo, there are ski bars (very expensive!), luggage storage, hotels and hotels.

There is a training area right next door, but it is flat and without a slope. For example, in Sheregesh, the training is much better in my opinion, there is a slope, I stood on a board there for the first time, but in Kazakhstan our friends tried to ride, it was not at all the same. In Shymbulak, it is then immediately better to climb the rope tow onto the blue route, which is next to the training school.

Prices in Chimbulak are mega expensive. A daily subscription costs 2800 rubles, either the ruble has fallen SO much, or the prices themselves are unrealistic. All the Almaty residents with whom I managed to communicate at the resort think the same thing, so if they themselves want to go skiing, they go to the Karakol ski resort, which is in Kyrgyzstan, on the other side of the Trans-Ili Alatau. As for the snow, there was very little of it during our trip (January holidays). They rolled roughly on the ice. We didn't really enjoy it. But judging by the announcements of the Chimbulak ski resort on Instagram, the snow falls suddenly, and immediately by 15 cm, the riders are enjoying themselves! But we became interested in Karakol. The Chimbulak ski resort has several slopes, namely 8. Each of them has its own color, and each color, in turn, indicates the difficulty of the slope.

There is only one green route, it is considered very easy. Blue is considered to be not very difficult, but not easy either.

There are 3 difficult trails at the Shymbulak resort, they are marked in red. In addition, there is also a route with increased difficulty, marked in black. There are also yellow and purple ones.

Their total length is 3 km 620 m.

The highest height is 3,163 meters.

Every year, new trails appear on the resort’s territory. In addition, it is interesting that they are certified by a special federation and are among the most difficult tracks in the world.

All routes are very convenient and easy to get to. They are served by cable cars: double chairlifts, single chairlifts and rope tows.

Most recently, the developers launched another road that can accommodate 4 people at once.

They can also be reached using a towing lift or baby lift.

The trails are always in excellent condition, as they are looked after very carefully. In addition, on the territory of the resort itself there are 4 machines that compact the snow covers.

The area where you can ride occupies an area of ​​3163 m, and the length of the plateau is almost 4000 m, with elevation differences of 943 m. The maximum slope of the slope is 45 degrees, the average is 25. Moreover, the slopes are completely different, with different degrees of slope and softness.
