Travel companies offer their clients to visit beautiful ski slopes, sea coasts, or gain impressions on one of the excursion tours.

Excursion tourism in Europe

For those who prefer a budget holiday, an excursion tour option is suitable. To create a festive mood, many people go to Europe in January. The Christmas atmosphere here remains, despite the fact that the main Catholic holidays have ended. In every city, squares are decorated for winter and new exhibitions are opened. It’s easy to see the sights because in the south the temperature reaches 16 degrees.

Excursions in January are not so crowded, so you can explore all the interesting places without rushing.

Perhaps even adults dream of seeing the real Santa Claus at least once in their lives, and for children meeting him will be the most vivid impression. If you are not afraid of frost and wind, then feel free to go to Finland directly to Santa’s residence. He lives in the unique village of Rovaniemi with the elves, and the Finns call him Joulupukki. Lapland can also treat its guests to a unique natural phenomenon – the Northern Lights. Thousands of tourists come to see it every year.

Scandinavian countries are generally very picturesque. Their nature has remained virtually unchanged since the development of these lands by people. If you want to see these beauties, then the question of where to go should not arise: Norway warmly welcomes tourists from all over the world. Only here can you appreciate the beauty of unique natural formations - the Norwegian fjords. Snow-covered, fabulous landscapes of mountains and villages will not leave anyone indifferent. Although we should not forget that the Scandinavian countries are quite cold, so in January the temperature here often drops to 20 degrees below zero.

If you like warm weather more, then you shouldn’t think that winter Europe is not the place for your holiday. Affectionate Greece, Italy and Spain are located much south of Santa's residence. Here the temperature rarely falls below 10 degrees Celsius. It’s worth going here in the summer at the height of the tourist season. Where to go here in January? The winter weather in this area is mild and comfortable, clean air and numerous historical and cultural attractions will create an ideal atmosphere for relaxation. In summer, the scorching heat does not allow you to explore everything here as you would like, but in winter you can go wherever your heart desires.

In January, you can save a lot of money when traveling to the south of Europe. Prices for museum tickets are much lower here in winter.

Local holidays will provide special impressions. In January, Italy and Spain celebrate Epiphany. This is a kind sorceress who flies to children at night and leaves gifts in their stockings by the fireplace. Obedient children receive sweets, and naughty children receive coals. In Europe it is the day of Epiphany.

The holiday is celebrated quite noisily. Large-scale processions, collective meals, and fairs take place on the streets. Epifania always knows where she should look, this is one of the most beloved children's characters in Italy and Spain. There are many legends and fairy tales about this sorceress.

If you believe that bad weather does not exist, then you should also go to the UK in January. During this period, you won’t have to spend a lot of time waiting in lines in front of museums and historical sites; the developed infrastructure will not let you get bored. By the way, it is during the cold season that a modern rock festival and a Celtic art festival (Glasgow) take place here.

Very close to us are the Czech Republic and Poland. The weather will not be a hindrance to taking a good look at the local ancient cathedrals and squares and enjoying the amazing beauty of the palaces. In Prague, after the New Year there is a huge Christmas market. Here you can not only choose souvenirs, but also taste authentic Czech cuisine.

European mountains

The January weather is perfect for active tourism. Excellent slopes, good equipment and cozy hotels await tourists in Austria. It is in this European country that there are more than a thousand resort villages located at the same time. To choose exactly where to go and where to stay, you need to assess your needs. Some resorts offer trails of varying difficulty levels, and some of them are designed only for professionals or, conversely, only for beginners.

Lech is called the cradle of skiing. This town is famous not only for its various trails (their length is about 260 kilometers), but also for its developed lift system. There is a special park for snowboarders. There is also a children's track for the youngest guests.

Another Austrian resort hosted the World Championships in 2001. Needless to say, San Anton is equipped to the highest standard? Of course, this winter resort is very popular. Thousands of skiers come here every year to conquer the most difficult slopes. By the way, the infrastructure here is also one of the best, so it is better to book hotels in advance.

European Sea in January

If we talk about where beach lovers should go, then first of all we should talk about Spain and its Canary Islands. This is the perfect place to relax in January! Despite the comfortable temperature (at plus 24 degrees, the water does not get cooler than 20 plus), there are not many tourists in these places in January. Clean air and a calm atmosphere allow you to bask in the sun during the New Year holidays.

Of course, here magnificent nature is combined with developed infrastructure. Tourists enjoy visiting the island of Tenerife, visiting the vicinity of the active volcano Teide and absorbing the flavor of local traditions. Your vacation will be complemented by a visit to recreational parks with a sea of attractions and various historical attractions.

A January holiday in Europe can be fabulous, the main thing is to choose the right option for yourself. First, read our tips that will help you decide where exactly you should go:

  • For those who love excursions and a rich program, special tours to Italy, France, Spain or Greece are most suitable. Many historical monuments have been preserved here. In addition, the temperature in winter is comfortable (about 15 plus), so you can see the sights without heavy clothes.
  • If you want to experience the local flavor and customs, it is better to go on a trip in the first days of January. In this case, you will be able to catch one of the brightest Catholic holidays in Europe - Epiphany. At this time, colorful carnivals, fairs and processions are held in European countries.
  • For winter sports lovers, a holiday in the Alps is an ideal option. To save money, it is better to come here with a large group and rent a cottage. In Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the mountains are not very high, they are more suitable for beginner skiers. Andorran resorts will also not leave ski lovers indifferent.
  • It is better to spend a family holiday in Finland. Children will long remember the residence of Santa Claus. Finnish resorts are also the best place for romance. You can celebrate Christmas in a cozy separate cottage, which, according to Finnish traditions, will have a sauna as a mandatory attribute.
  • To calculate the travel budget, it is worth analyzing the way the trip is organized (whether it will be independent or in the form of an excursion tour). In cases where the trip takes place on December 31, the costs will increase. But in the second half of January, vacation prices begin to fall rapidly.

Very often, my friends and I discussed traveling to Europe by car in a large group, but we never managed to get together for various reasons. Around Russia - please, but no one wanted to bother going further, until after several adventures on the way to the Cirque Du Soleil performance, everyone finally had a firm thought to immediately take off on a trip for the New Year. And this time the stars aligned!

Order a road trip route to European countries:

Dear friends, if you need help planning the route for your road trip, then I'll help you with this! You can get all the details!

What did you drive?

So, we had a company of 6 people - 3 boys and 3 girls. It was decided to drive two cars - a Subaru Forester and a Chevrolet Cruze. The Subaru has a very large trunk and the rear seats fold out in such a way that people can sleep peacefully. Therefore, it was decided to transport all things in Cruz.

When did you go to Europe and for how long?

The period of the trip was the New Year holidays (late December - early January), in total the trip lasted exactly 2 weeks.

Travel route

The main goals of the trip were celebrating the New Year in one of the beautiful cities of Europe, excursions and post-holiday shopping in Milan. Therefore, we decided to go to Prague for several days, then to Milan and on the way back visit Krakow, the center of which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

From here, an approximate route diagram immediately emerged - Nizhny Novgorod - Moscow-Brest- WarsawPrague-Munich- Milan-Venice-Vienna- Krakow-Brest-Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod is about 7500 km in two weeks. The main cities are highlighted in bold, the rest are intermediate stops.

Car preparation

To travel to Europe with your own car, it was necessary to resolve several issues:

  • entry on studded tires is prohibited in some countries ->buy new wheels
  • buy a Green Card (insurance) for each car -> 2500 rub. for a car EU + Belarus in any insurance company
  • what roads should I take? paid or free? — calculate the approximate cost of travel on toll roads
  • calculate the approximate cost of gasoline in the European Union
  • decide on the number of drivers

Preparation of documents for traveling to Europe by car

What documents were needed for our trip to Europe:

  1. Valid foreign passports
  2. Driver's license (not international)
  3. Green Card car insurance - can be obtained from any insurance company; for travel in Belarus and the EU countries it cost approximately 2,500 rubles. per car

Hotel reservations

To obtain a Schengen visa, you may be required to receive a letter confirming your hotel reservation. Therefore, the first thing we did was go to the website and select the accommodation options that suited us.

The main stops were supposed to be made in the following cities:

  • Warsaw
  • Prague
  • Milan
  • Krakow

2 nights on the road

Since we planned to leave for Europe early in the morning, we allocated just the night to cross the border, which took about 7 hours, and then leave for Warsaw in the morning. So the first hotel will be there.

Warsaw was a stopping point for us, so we booked an inexpensive apartment for 6 people at once in order to relax and the next day go to Prague, where we planned to celebrate New Year’s Eve and spend a few days -> 2 hotel.

After Prague, the transfer point on our route is Munich, then we go to Milan, where we booked the next hotel. Lunch is very expensive in Italy, so we paid for a hotel that had a kitchenette.

The same thing with Krakow - the last city of our trip. In the end, it turned out that we had to spend 2 nights on the road, but the folding seats in the Subaru saved us. So, the list of hotels:

  1. Warsaw – Towarowa Residence
  2. Prague – Clarion Congress Hotel Prague
  3. Milan – Zambala Luxury Residence
  4. Krakow – Apartamenty Bracka 6

Crossing the border with the European Union

Our route lay through Belarus, so we passed the border there. At first they wanted to go through Grodno, but then they thought that there were more terminals in Brest and, perhaps, everything would go faster. In any case, we allocated the whole night or approximately 7 hours of time to the border.

Border congestion can be viewed on the official website of the Border Committee of the Republic of Belarus.

As a result, by nightfall we were at the border and got stuck in a very big traffic jam. The traffic before the New Year was unreal. But due to this, the border guards probably worked more quickly than usual. In the end it took about 5 hours to get to the border.

What to take with you? Weather in Europe in winter

Before the trip, we looked at the weather for the next 2 weeks - above-zero temperatures in all cities and countries. But after the Russian cold, you shouldn’t delude yourself with the positives, because the European winter, although warm, is often windy and rainy. Therefore, at +3-6 degrees in Prague it was very cold.

Weather in Warsaw during the New Year holidays

Warsaw promised an easy plus. But in the evening it was quite cool. We wore winter jackets, hats and warm shoes.

Weather in Prague during the New Year holidays

From +2 to 5 degrees Celsius. The weather in Prague on New Year's holidays is very windy, add to this frost. This is the umpteenth time we’ve been to Prague during this period - it was very cold, dress warmly, like winter.

Weather in Milan during the New Year holidays

Milan is very rainy in winter, but it is a little warmer here than in other cities. It even reached +10 degrees and the sun was shining. Depending on the temperature, we dress either warmly (with a hat, warm shoes), or as in Russian autumn - a coat, light boots and an umbrella. In general, local ladies love to parade around the streets in a fur coat and shoes on their bare feet when it’s plus 2 degrees :) So it depends on your imagination and health.

Weather in Krakow during the New Year holidays

Krakow pleased us with the calmest weather of the entire trip - 9 degrees Celsius, calm and a little sun. Looks like October weather. It was quite warm.

So, to summarize, I would like to make a list of necessary things for the trip. Of course, everything is individual and depends on the goal, but the main things are:

From clothes:

  • warm clothes (jackets, hats, scarves, gloves, shoes), after all, we had to return to cold Russia
  • autumn things are easier if you don’t plan to buy everything there.
  • comfortable shoes if you plan to walk a lot
