The best restaurants in Georgia menu. Food in Tbilisi: supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, McDonald's. Restaurant "Funicular", restaurant "Chela" and confectionery "Puri Guliani"

There are 4 main reasons to visit Georgia: people, mountains, sea and FOOD. About 100 articles have been written on the blog about the first three, but almost nothing about food. I'm correcting myself. This photo post is about the best cafes and restaurants in Georgia (in my opinion).

Your comments with the coordinates of your favorite cafes and restaurants in different cities of Georgia are more welcome than ever :)

I’m afraid to recommend establishments of Georgian cuisine, because food is too subjective. I visited all the places listed in the article on the advice of local residents, my friends and blog readers. In some places it was really very tasty, but in others I didn’t like it at all.

In provincial towns, Georgians relaxing at neighboring tables often gave us food, lemonade or wine, sang with a guitar, and invited us to dance. Less often in Tbilisi, but it also happened. This despite the fact that I was with a guy.

A trip to a traditional establishment in Georgia is always a holiday and always surprises. Here I talk about my favorite cafes and restaurants in Batumi, Tbilisi, Kutaisi. I am writing about meat dishes from the words of my martyr.

Favorite restaurants in Batumi

Restaurant Tavaduri

st. Lermontova, 36/38 (intersection of Pushkin and Lermontov)

Prices average

This is my favorite restaurant in Batumi. It is located far from the places where tourists usually live.
Divine trout, huge khinkali. Everything is delicious, large portions, wonderful waiters (they will help you decide on your choice). Mostly Georgians go to Tavaduri. There are enough people at any time.

Minus— smoky, as in most indoor spaces in Batumi.

Laguna

Gorgiladze, 18

The most delicious Adjarian khachapuri in Batumi. There is a small one (6 GEL) - two people can easily eat it, and a large one for 11 GEL - it is almost impossible for two people to eat it. Really huge.

Adjarian khachapuri in Laguna is distinguished by the fact that there is a lot of cheese and little dough. They also have delicious pizza. Other types of khachapuri are too fatty.

There is a hall for smokers and non-smokers.

Ajarian House

st. Sheriff Khimshiashvili 10 (at the southern end of Lake Ardagani)

in Georgian Adjaruli Sakhli

Prices averages for Batumi:

Khachapuri – 6-10 GEL
Achma (Adjarian cheese pie) – 2 lari
Snacks – 3-6 GEL
Soup – 5-6 GEL
Hot meat dishes of Adjarian cuisine - 10-15 GEL

The blog has a detailed article about average prices in establishments, you can read:

The restaurant of Adjarian cuisine is located on New Boulevard in Batumi near the sea. Nice interior. In summer there are a lot of mosquitoes due to the proximity of the lake and a lot of people due to the fact that this is the most popular establishment on New Batumi Boulevard.

I like it in the Adjarian house khachapuri with crispy crust. You can order a peeled (without pulp) boat. There will only be crispy crust and cheese. When you get tired of khachapuri from Laguna, you can go to the Adjarian House

Tower Restaurant

st. Sheriff Khimshiashvili 9/11

Located on the boulevard immediately behind the Adjara House. If you are or just passing by, then it makes sense to stop by

Prices are 10-20% higher than the city average, but the portions are very large. Behind 9$ You can eat for two with a tip.

Delicious mushroom soup, Caesar salad, champignons with suluguni on ketsi. I like it there because you can sit on the balcony and look at the sea. Well, the waiters are cool, but there are almost no people there

Cafe Sazandari

Gorgiladze, 78

We often went to this cafe because we lived nearby. Sazandari has a pleasant atmosphere, many locals. You can come for lunch during the day and be stuck until the evening because someone at the next table has brought a guitar and is already singing a song for you.

Delicious chikhirtma, salads, chicken. Eggplants and khinkali are so-so. The food is a little greasy, so it's not for everyone. There is a waitress there, Lela - the best in all of Georgia:) She will tell you everything in detail about the dishes, give advice, and give a compliment to each guest. Wonderful man.

Sachashnike Restaurant

Gorgiladze 78

Next to Sazandari (next door).

Also for lovers of traditional Georgian cuisine. For me, there is too much mayonnaise and onions, but if you want to try what Georgians eat, and not what is made to suit the tastes of tourists, you can go.

Georgians often gather there in large groups.

The prices are low, the food is prepared quickly, the food is delicious (if you ask for something not very fatty).

Pies

Griboedova, 5

There are many cafes in Batumi where you can buy cakes, but the most delicious ones are on Griboyedov, 5. As usual, this place is also not on Google maps or on Tripadvisor

Shawarma

corner of Gorgiladze and Lermontov

There are always a lot of locals there. If you want something harmful, then come here for shawarma. You can safely take one for two. You can get Turkish coffee nearby. We bought it for home

Heart of Batumi

Gen. Mazniashvili 11

Prices are higher than in other establishments

This is a modern cafe, more aimed at tourists and made for them. The sizes of the dishes are European, that is, medium. The food is less spicy and greasy than in traditional Georgian cuisine establishments. You can visit for a change.

Delicious baked eggplant and vegetable salad.

Restaurant Qobroni in the village of Kokhi

This is not in Batumi, but in the village of Kokhi in 20 km from Batumi closer to Kobuleti. Trout farm, there is a restaurant on site. There in the oven they cook the most delicious fish with nuts that I have tasted in my life.

Worst cafes in Batumi

  • Samikitno near the lower cable car station there is a chain cafe. We went there to eat khinkali with potatoes (in other establishments they only served khinkali with meat). In Tbilisi in Samikitno the food is delicious, in Batumi it’s so-so. They took shish kebab, khinkali with potatoes for me, and salad. The only thing that tasted good was the lemonade.
  • Fish cafe on Ninoshvili opposite the Technological University - we ordered fish there for 20 lari. I haven’t eaten such disgusting food for a long time, although Misha liked it, so it’s a matter of taste
  • Restaurant Kiziki— small portions, high prices for Batumi, food not very tasty. When we were there two years ago, the food was better.

Tasteless red mullet. Or not a red mullet?

Where else to eat in Batumi?

One Georgian recommended these places, but I haven’t visited them, so I don’t know if they’re delicious:

Cafe Gardens Vinyl Chacha time Monet Marche

Chocolate Greetings from Batumi Roof Batumi Lizzaran

More Fan Fan Many people recommended it, but it only works from May to September. Go not for the food, but for the interior.

Other establishments in Batumi, where I had a chance to have lunch and dinner during my two months of living in the city, were not bad, but did not cause much delight.

Best restaurants in Kutaisi

There are many cafes and restaurants in Kutaisi, I remember only two of them, the rest were mediocre.

Upd. Restaurant CLOSED:(Mamapapuri Restaurant

Ioseb Grishashvilis Kucha, Kutaisi

This restaurant is not on any map, and I couldn’t find it on the Internet either. If you go from the center, cross the White Bridge of Kutaisi and walk literally 100 meters, you can see Mamapapuri signs on the corner.

We found this restaurant by chance because we were renting just opposite the entrance to Mamapapuri.

This restaurant didn't even have a menu, but the food was amazing. Especially eggplant with nuts. And khachapuri, and khinkali, and salads, and sauces, and shish kebab. Eggplant with nuts is unforgettable. They asked the owner to bring food at his discretion. We ordered a glass of wine and the decanter was served right away. We danced with the Georgians and sang songs.

Prices are low. This is one of the favorite restaurants in all of Georgia.

Bar-Restaurant Palace

Pushkin street, II line, building 1

The most popular establishment among foreigners in Kutaisi. Georgians also love this place. There are always a lot of people. Portions are average, food ok. Cozy little room. Live music. In the evenings they play the violin there.

If you want to feel like you’re in the center of what’s happening, when everyone around you speaks English and laughs, you can go. The downside is that it's constantly smoky. Prices are above average in Georgia

Best restaurants in Tbilisi

After my autumn visit, I had a gap in Tbilisi. We visited dozens of restaurants during our trips to Tbilisi, but now they all don’t seem so tasty after I experienced Mamapapuri in Kutaisi and Tavaduri in Batumi. It's time to discover new places!

If you know decent establishments in Tbilisi, I would be grateful for your recommendations

Mill (Tsiskvili)

Prices are above average, but this restaurant is recommended by many Georgians as one of the best in the city. Their families go there and like to celebrate holidays. The restaurant is large, the portions are also large, the food is delicious.

Lagidze Water

Address: Tsminda Sameba, to the left of the main entrance to the cathedral territory. Nearest metro station: Avlabari

One of the best Adjarian-style khachapuri that can be found in Tbilisi. People recommend taking Imeretian-style khachapuri there. We ordered that too, but nothing special. But people go to this cafe not for food, but for lemonade. Creamy is the most delicious (similar to ice cream). Chocolate is also unusual. Lemony refreshing. You can try a few.

A glass of lemonade costs 1.5 GEL
Imeretian-style khachapuri small 3 lari (they bring 4 pieces for this money)
Adjarian khachapuri 7 lari for a small one (one person can eat enough, for two it’s better to take a large one)

On the left is lemonade, on the right is creamy lemonade with foam.

Samikitno

Agmashenebeli street

Network cafe. It tastes best at Meydan Square behind the Metekhi bridge in . In other establishments of the Samikitno chain (on Shardeni, on Svobody Square) the food is mediocre.

There are khinkali not only with meat, but also with cheese, mushrooms, and potatoes. Banana split dessert with 9 scoops of ice cream. We often went there for lunch because it was in the very center, plus it was cheap and tasty.

There are always a lot of people, especially on the first floor. It’s better to go to the second floor and, if possible, to the balcony overlooking old Tbilisi.

Shalva Dadiani Street

On this street, if you walk from Svodoba Square, on the left side there are several cafes in the basements. I won’t recommend any particular place, as it was delicious in different places on different days. I go to this street every time I’m in Tbilisi. I look where the most Georgians are sitting and go there.

Georgian house

Tsabadze street, 2

Prices are higher than the average in Tbilisi, but the food is incredibly tasty. My favorite is pear compote. Everything is beautiful, super-helpful waiters in white gloves. There is live music in the evenings.

Salobie in Mtskheta

Restaurant of Georgian cuisine on the highway near. It's great in the summer when you can sit on the terrace above the river. There is live music, Jvari is visible somewhere in the distance.

We took khinkali and some salads. Khinkali turned out to be a mixture of beef and pork. Perhaps the other dishes there are delicious, since everyone praises them so much. Maybe it wasn't our day

I have not been to these establishments, but the reader reviews are so positive that I am including these restaurants in this list.

1. Kachreti Champion

Alexander's review: “On the road to Sighnaghi there is a place called Kachreti, the restaurant “Kachreti Champion” - this is the 1st place in my ranking, real champions of barbecue. 26 types of kebab - and what kind!

Be sure to try the liver kebab there - it’s magic, I’m a cook myself, but I’m unlikely to be able to repeat this! And the prices are there... 4 kebabs, 2 large khachapuri, 4 huge salads of vegetables with nuts, 20 or 30 khinkali, 5 bottles of gas water, 4 liters of wine, bread, sauces, something else, the table was for 5 people - 71 lari. I barely got up)))

The owner of “Kachreti Champion” (Amiran) has the same restaurant in Tbilisi, with the same magical cuisine. We didn’t have time to hit it, next time. I don’t remember the name, but taxi drivers know)))”

2. Rebi-Gurjaani

Review by Marina N:“When in Kakheti, be sure to stop in Gurjaani. Firstly, there is a monument to the prototype of the main character of the film Father of a Soldier, Giorgi Maharashvili.

Secondly, there is (IMHO) the coolest and most delicious Georgian restaurant Rebi-Gurjaani (the menu is only in Georgian and they speak only Georgian there).

The kebab there is soooo delicious at this restaurant! I've never eaten anything like this in my life! And what a service! and the prices were absolutely surprising!”

The best wines:

  • Khvanchkara
  • Kindzmarauli
  • Mukuzani
  • Saperavi
  • Tsinandali

What can a vegetarian eat in Georgia?

Georgia is a vegetarian paradise because fruits and vegetables are available all year round. In a cafe you can ask for lobio (a pot of beans), khinkali with potatoes or eggplants.

Remember the word " Samarho» (lenten) and ask what is on the menu samarho (another version is samarkhvo, Georgian სამარხვო). Georgians are quite sensitive to fasting, so the menu of any self-respecting establishment includes meatless meatless dishes.

P.S. This article about the best restaurants and cafes in Georgia will be supplemented and changed as new places are discovered, but for now I recommend you read other interesting articles:

May you have delicious food in Georgia!

There are small problems - the coffee menu does not shine with its originality, consider yourself lucky if you stumbled upon a good cappuccino or raf (probably only 1-2 coffee shops serve it here). Georgians mainly drink Turkish or instant coffee, so Jacobs and Nescafe have launched some cool marketing activities here. And the well-being of the population has an impact: most people have no time for coffee in cafes. Don't look for Starbucks, it's not here and doesn't plan to appear, according to their official statement. But no, information update from March 2017 - they are planning to open! Moreover, Starbucks plans to create a “regional hub” in Tbilisi and open a coffee processing plant, and even a museum.

If Georgian cuisine is delicious almost everywhere, then it is better to choose places for coffee time in advance. There are coffee shops that are expensive and not worth it. However, compared to the fairly low prices for basic food, the price of coffee is not reduced. We have compiled a list of coffee shops for you so that you can drink your invigorating cup of cappuccino and be satisfied.

Most likely you will want to rest after walks around the center and have a cup or two when you are in the center of Tbilisi, for this case we recommend the following coffee shops:

Skola Coffee & Wine bar- a new establishment at the end of 2017 in the very center of Tbilisi, on Rustaveli Street 17. An excellent place with good coffee in a historical building, next to the famous theater. Well, we are in Georgia! What's coffee without wine? Therefore, the wine bar is at your disposal. The range of food is small, but you can have a snack on European cuisine.
Pleasant minimalist interior - wood (like beech) and white color. It would have been possible to make white dishes, but the owners decided to buy black ones. Great place, normal prices - we publish the menu in the photo. There are only a few such places in Tbilisi. Recommended for coffee lovers.

Prospero's Books- the most cozy place next to the bookstore on the street. Rustaveli, there is a terrace on the street. Books in a store and people in a cafe speak all kinds of languages of the world. Expats living in Tbilisi often come here to chat and work. Address: Rustaveli St., 34 in a quiet side street, from 9:30 to 21:00.

Entrée- French-Georgian chain of coffee shops. Addresses: st. David Agmashenebeli, 86; Pekini St., 7; Chavchavadze Avenue, 76; Kote Abkhazi, 47 (formerly Leselidze) - there are more, but these are the most “central”. Open from early morning - from 8:00 to 22:00

Double B- a recently opened branch of cool Russian coffee shops that position themselves as innovators in the world of coffee. Very advantageous location, center-center - next to Freedom Square, on the street. Galaktion Tabidze, 9 (if you stand with your back to Rustaveli Street, then on the right in the alley of the building with boutiques and next to the beginning of the tourist street Kote Abkhazi, also known as Leselidze). The price tag is above average. Opening hours from 11 to 22.

Dinehall— the staff gets confused with orders, the food is delicious and the interior is nice and glamorous. Cappuccino at an average price for Tbilisi is 6 GEL, everything else is expensive - too sweet cheesecake 16 GEL, good schnitzel with tartar sauce and fries. Advantageous location on Rustaveli 28, from 7.30 to 2.00.

Respublika Espresso Bar- a small and cute place next to the Carrefour supermarket. Stopping by for a cup of coffee to go is a nice thing, the prices for desserts and coffee are very encouraging. Located next to the Metro bus office, 3 Vekua St. from 9 to 22.

Donkin Donuts- the world's largest chain of coffee shops with donuts, pastries and sandwiches. You can take your coffee with you. There are several of them in Tbilisi, including on Freedom Square.

MADO- the dream of any blogger, enchanting serving of coffee and food. They are located on Freedom Square, opening hours from 7:30 to 23:45.

Gourmet— French coffee shop and bakery with excellent eclairs and coffee, reasonable prices. Located on the tourist street David Agmashenebeli, 47.

Luca Polare- a chain of cafes with a delicious and rich assortment ice cream, there is also coffee. A couple of cafes are located in the most tourist places - on David Agmashenebeli St., 125 and Kote Abkhazi, 34 (Leselidze). Open from 8 to 2:00.

Pur-Pur- cool interior, French vintage with Georgian flavor of the 20s. The cuisine is European, prices are above average. Have a cup of coffee and dessert here and that's enough. Center, address st. Abo Tbileli St 1, opening hours from 12 to 02:00.

Room's Hotel Tbilisi— the coffee is delicious and the prices are reasonable, the rest of the menu is very tasty, but expensive. Address st. Merab Kostava, 14 (Merab Kostava Street, 14).

Lolita— bar-club, good atmosphere, very tasty. Located opposite Rooms Hotel Tbilisi. Open from 11 to 1:00, on Fridays and weekends until 02:00.

Paul- an international French chain of coffee shops, there is only one in Tbilisi so far. St. Ilya Abashidze, 26, from 9:00 to 23:00.

Brotmeister- a chain of Austrian bakeries, you can snack on sandwiches and salads. 7/9 Otar Taktakishvili str, I.Abashidze str 69; V.dolidze 38; R.Eristavi 16; Pekini 16. Opening hours from 8 to 22.

PinPon Cafe— a tiny and cute cafe, homemade creme brulee, delicious muffins, healthy sandwiches, seasonal smoothies. Address st. Ilya Chavchavadze, 22, from 10 to 22.

Coffee Lab— excellent coffee and desserts, a great place to work. Alexandra Kazbegi Street, 27, from 9:00 to 23:00.

Gardenia Shevardnadze— a cafe-garden where you can drink coffee, eat dessert and buy or admire plants for the garden. Entrance to the garden is paid separately and costs 2 GEL. The coffee and menu are average, but the beauty around is worth a visit. Far from the center.

Restaurants with stunning panoramic views & romantic places in Tbilisi

Restaurant "Funicular", restaurant "Chela" and confectionery "Puri Guliani"- all these places are located in one place on Mount Mtatsminda. You can get here by funicular. At Chela, it’s better to drink wine and chocolate-creamy lemonade - it’s very tasty! You can also eat something more substantial here. The pastry shop prepares delicious donuts in the oven. Everyone in Tbilisi and beyond knows about these donuts. They are prepared after ordering, delicious, fresh and large. Good coffee. The views of the entire city are amazing!

Tiffany Bar & Terrace- a romantic place on the map of Tbilisi at the RiverSide Hotel. Delicious coffee and sweet treats for the girls in the form of beautiful cocktails and cakes. Prices are one and a half times more expensive than in most restaurants in the city, but it's worth it. Located in the center - within walking distance from the street. Rustaveli. Brose Street turn, Right side of Riv. Mtkvari, from 12:00 to 23:45.

Cafes and restaurants in Tbilisi are an integral part of the atmosphere of the cozy Georgian capital. The new post contains a list of places where to eat tasty and inexpensive in Tbilisi. Or expensive, but still delicious :)

When you look into the courtyards of the old city, climb the Narikala fortress and stroll around others, you will definitely get hungry, and this is where our small guide to the delicious places of the city will come to the rescue.

Georgian cuisine is one of the reasons why you should come to Georgia. We gained several kilograms upon our return, and I wrote about the main national dishes in.

Basically, Georgian food is quite hearty, sometimes spicy, and the most famous dishes are khinkali, khachapuri, kharcho, lobio, tkemali sauce...

Here's what you need to know:

  • In all Georgian cafes and restaurants they gave us a bill and added the obligatory 10% for service. Tbilisi cafes are no exception.
  • The quality and taste of food do not depend on the “coolness” of the restaurant and its appearance.
  • Prices in cafes in Tbilisi are not much different from other cities in Georgia, at least for tourists. There are many establishments with prices above average, but finding a budget option is not a problem.

1. Dukhan “Racha”

Entrance to the Racha dukhan

A cult place and at the same time quite authentic. It is located in a basement with brick walls, a display case and stern aunties, as if transported in a time machine from the Soviet Union. This is a traditional place - this is exactly what many Tbilisi cafes looked like. Quite tasty, but without any frills, but it is located in the very center. The prices are quite low.

Address: intersection of Lermontov and Dadiani streets

Lagidze Waters is, one might say, the specialty of Tbilisi, a place with amazing lemonades of all flavors and delicious khachapuri. Especially great chocolate lemonade ;-)

Address: on the territory of the Tsminda Sameba temple

3. Restaurant chain “Machakhela”

This is a popular chain of restaurants in Tbilisi (about 8-9 in the city) with air conditioning and wi-fi. The main cuisine here is primarily Adjarian cuisine, so you should definitely try Adjarian khachapuri here if you are not going to Batumi (the most delicious there, in our opinion). One of the central restaurants of this chain is located right on the Maidan opposite the Metekhi Bridge and the rock. Prices are above average.

4. "Samikitno"

Restaurants of the same owners as Machakhela. Large selection and average prices, a big plus that it is located in the center. Just after visiting the magnificent ones you can drop in.

Address: st. Tumaniani, 23

5. Khinkalnaya “At Velyaminov’s”

In Velyaminov’s khinkalnaya

One of the oldest khinkali in Tbilisi, here you can try khinkali, take 5-6 pieces to start. By the way, this is how you should eat them correctly: you bite off a piece of dough from the edge, drink the broth, and only then finish it. Leave the top piece of dough on the plate;-) The interior is somewhat reminiscent of the Racha dukhan.

Address: st. Dadiani, 8

6. "Shemoikhede Genatsvale"

The name translates as “Come in, dear” - also a small chain of restaurants in the capital of Georgia. And here, too, it is recommended to try khinkali.

7. "Zahar Zaharich"

A large restaurant not far from the Dry Bridge (there is also an antique market there). There are several types of khinkali, shish kebab, kharcho, khachapuri and other dishes to choose from. Moderate prices.

Address: Wright Bank, 3

8. "Maspindzelo"

A modern restaurant near the Sulfur Baths, a good wine list, the locals themselves come here. Plus, it works 24 hours a day. Prices are above average.

Address: st. Gorgasali, 7

9. House of Khinkali

The establishment is located on Rustaveli Avenue near the metro station of the same name. Simple interior and low prices, fast service.

Address: st. Rustaveli, 37

10. Cheburechnaya on Abanotubani

If you decide to have something cheap and cheerful, stop by this cheburek shop. Simple atmosphere, but very tasty. Next to the sulfur baths.

Address: st. Grishashvili, 8

11. "Warszawa"

A small bar with a counter on the street, very popular among Poles. which is logical;-) and other Europeans. All drinks are 2 GEL, and food is 5 GEL.

Address: st. Pushkina, 19

12. "PurPur"

A very popular and cozy establishment, with a cute interior and vintage items, located on three floors in old Tbilisi. Large selection of wines, live music, expensive.

Address: st. Abo Tbileli, 1

These are not all the restaurants in Tbilisi where you can eat delicious food. After all, in Georgia there is a cult of food and cafes are found at every step in the city center. Lots of art and pseudo-art places, hipster coffee shops, healthy food restaurants and so on.

And also one of its largest cities. More than a million people live here. Every year a huge number of tourists from all over the world come here. What attracts them here? Of course, the sights of the city, built back in the 5th century. But Tbilisi restaurants also deserve the attention of tourists. Today we will tell you about why they attract a huge number of visitors. We will also consider the most popular restaurants in Tbilisi. We'll give you their addresses, descriptions, and tell you what to order on the menu.

Features of restaurant service in Georgia

Each catering establishment has its own special aura. What is special about Tbilisi restaurants? The fact is that amazingly hospitable people live in this country. This remarkable quality is evident not only in homes, but also in restaurants. Next we will talk about those establishments that are definitely worth visiting at least once. Now we will list the main advantages of Georgian restaurants. These include:

  • Delicious food, in the preparation of which a large number of spices are used.
  • Large portion sizes.
  • Musical accompaniment. As a rule, only live music is played in Georgian restaurants.
  • Well-mannered and friendly staff.
  • The workers speak several languages. One of which, as a rule, is Russian.
  • Some restaurants offer live entertainment.
  • The so-called tip is included in the bill. They usually amount to an amount equal to ten or fifteen percent of the total cost.

The most popular restaurants in Tbilisi

We bring to your attention an overview of places that deserve special attention from visitors. Why do the best restaurants in Tbilisi attract numerous tourists? High-quality service and a huge variety of national cuisine. Among the establishments that meet the above characteristics are the following:

  • Restaurant "Melnitsa" (Georgian name - "Tsiskvili"). Despite the fact that the establishment is located far from the city center and there are no attractions nearby, it deserves your attention. The restaurant is located in the most picturesque place of the city - the right bank. How can you get here? Very simple. The most popular option is a minibus with numbers: 46, 121. The stop is called the “Tsiskvili” restaurant. One of the distinctive advantages of this place is the beautiful garden, which is located in front of the establishment. Gamarjoba!

As you probably already guessed, today the site will talk about a culinary journey to the capital of Georgia - Tbilisi. The amazing cuisine of this country deserves to be not only tasted, but also talked about. It is not for nothing that the culture of feasting and the culture of toast live side by side in Georgia.

Georgia is a country of great people, aromatic wines and vibrant national cuisine. Since the times when Georgia was Colchis and Iberia - the edge of the world, where Prometheus was chained to the rocks for many years and where Jason went for the Golden Fleece, rare varieties of grapes were grown here and a wide variety of cheeses were prepared. And to this day, giant people still live in Sakartvelo (which is what the Georgians themselves call their country): Chabua Amirejibi, Rezo Gabriadze, Givi Berikashvili... And around them rise the white and green mountains of the Caucasus.

Soup with khinkali

Relatively speaking, I would all Georgian cuisine divided into several areas:
1) Stews: chakapuli, chashushuli, chakhokhbili, ostri, etc.
2) Thick soups: chikhirtma, kharcho, khash, etc.
3) Dishes on a ketsi (clay frying pan): ojakhuri, chkmeruli, kuchmachi, etc.
4) Kebabs.
5) Khinkali: with minced meat, with minced meat, with herbs, with potatoes, in broth, etc.
6) Baking: a wide variety of khachapuri, mchadi, lobiani, etc.
7) Dairy products: nadugi, matsoni, suluguni, etc.
8) Lobio (I wanted to highlight this dish, since the attitude towards it in Georgia is special).

This division, of course, is very approximate, because modern Georgian cuisine does not stand still. There are more and more restaurants that offer original dishes based on Georgian culinary traditions, or Georgian dishes adapted to European tastes. There are also perfect experimenters - this is how I managed to taste the amazing sorbet made from beet matsoni in Cafe "Gabriadze"— “Gabriadze cafe” (more on the cafe itself a little later). A matsoni, by the way, this is a special type of curdled milk :)

Georgian restaurants also different. There are real ones in my understanding duhans- such typical Georgian traditional eateries with wooden furniture, dim lighting and exclusively Georgian cuisine, where the menu is usually only in Georgian. By the way, for this occasion, I had to learn the Georgian alphabet, which helped not only read the menu, but also understand the contents of the final bill :)

Even more often, I came across not real dukhans, but restaurants stylized as them - also dark, semi-basement ones, in which the administrator walks between tables, like the owner of a house, making sure that all guests feel good and cozy, but at the same time with a menu on English, with a show program and high prices. This option is aimed at tourists and metropolitan residents who want to eat decently and watch a traditional music and dance performance.

And, finally, there are completely secular restaurants with Georgian cuisine, more expensive and less traditional in terms of interior. Performances are also shown there, only large chandeliers with bright lights hang from the ceiling, waiters are dressed in vests with butterflies, napkins hang on the tables like swans, and large windows offer views of Tbilisi stretching across the hills or the decorated courtyard. But most of all I liked the small cafes, where everything is intimate, extremely cozy and, as a rule, very tasty.

And I want to clarify that I’m talking now about establishments with Georgian cuisine (or original cuisine with Georgian motifs), but in Tbilisi there are a lot of others - Thai and Japanese restaurants, Italian taverns, Ukrainian taverns, establishments with Uzbek cuisine (one was called funny - “Gruzbek” :)), European coffee shops, American fast foods, etc. I won't talk about them. I’ll tell you about a few establishments that I especially remember, and what you can eat in them and what you can’t. I will also indicate the average bill per person, assuming that this person will eat soup, a main course, pastries (khachapuri or mchadi), sometimes dessert and, of course, drink tea or lemonade. That is, we are talking about a person with a good appetite. That person is me, Mr.Foodcritic :)

SOLOLAKIS KARI, სოლოლაკის კარი

The Sololakis Kari restaurant is located very close to Freedom Square (Tavisupleba). The place, in my opinion, is interesting in order to get the first fresh impressions of Georgia.

This is just a stylized dukhan in the basement, where every day in the evening from 8 o’clock there is a good program - fiery folk dances, chic voices of singers - and the menu is quite extensive in representing the main dishes of Georgian cuisine. Compared to Georgian cuisine in Almaty- it's exotic. But after some time spent in Tbilisi, it became clear to me that there are places where the food is much tastier. Except that chihirtma(thick chicken soup) at Sololakis Kari was good.

Chikhirtma

Dolma(minced meat in grape leaves) was too spicy, chashushuli(stew with tomatoes and spices) was not bad, but did not melt in the mouth, and the brain with tongue on ketsi was a bit fatty. The bad news is that many Georgians smoke, almost everywhere. Therefore, I preferred to look for options with summer terraces, and “Sololakis Kari” was literally filled with thick tobacco smoke. Be prepared for this. The bill for one person was approximately 30 lari(about 2700 tenge)

SHEMOIKHEDE GENATSVALE, შემოიხედე გენაცვალე

The Shemoikhede Genatsvale restaurant chain is very popular among Tbilisi residents and city guests. The fact is that the prices there are relatively low, and the food is quite good. I tried the same chikhirtma there (no worse, and maybe better, than in “Sololakis Kari”), cheese on ketsi, ojakhuri(meat with potatoes and spices on ketsi), shish kebab, khinkali(Georgian manti) - everything was very good. I recommend it as a place where you can eat deliciously, quickly and inexpensively. In addition, there are several of these restaurants - there are also on the avenue Shota Rustaveli, and on the street Leselidze and somewhere on the street Pushkin- in general, you can choose the closest one.

Nadugi in Suluguni

Particularly good in “Shemoikhede Genatsval” nadugi(Georgian cottage cheese) with herbs, wrapped in suluguni leaves. A very tender, spicy and aromatic appetizer. I really liked it. Average bill per person - approx. 20 lari(1800 tenge).

SALOBIO (სალობიო)

A small but cozy cafe on the road to the ancient capital of Georgia Mtskheta. This place is famous for its lobio(thick bean stew with spices) and Lobiani(flatbread with beans), which the locals told me about in advance. Indeed, I really liked the lobio.

Lobio with mchadi from Salobio

Khinkali and racing(corn tortilla). And I even took the lobiani with me. The place is notable for the almost complete absence of Russian-language inscriptions and Russian-speaking people, and also for its very low prices. They say that the owners of the Salobio cafe run their own farm, grow their own beans and corn, which may be why the taste of all the dishes is simply amazing. Many believe that the best lobio in all of Georgia is prepared here. Bill per person - approx. 7-10 GEL(630 - 900 tenge).

IN THE SHADOW OF METEKHI, მეტეხის ჩრდილში

This restaurant, not far from the ancient Metekhi temple, belongs to the category of “secular”. The view there is, of course, amazing. The restaurant's veranda is located on a cliff directly above the Kura River, behind which stand the ancient Georgian temples scattered across the hills in all their ancient grandeur. The restaurant is very popular, according to travel catalogs and some online forums.

Royal- chef's dish

Everything was too pretentious and somehow not at all Georgian, uncomfortable. Even the music program let us down. The singers sang well, but the sound was terribly loud and untuned, so being inside the restaurant itself turned out to be unbearable. My company and I moved to the veranda - there was a beautiful view from there, but the program was completely invisible. And the food turned out to be mediocre and very expensive. Moreover, our company was tempted by a dish from the chef with the premium name “Royal” with lamb ribs and vegetables. In fact, it turned out to be impressive, but not so tasty, and the total bill was about 50 lari per person (4500 tenge), and we ordered, in general, not much.

CAFE GABRIADZE (CAFE GABRIADZE, გაბრიაძე)

My favorite Georgian cafe, which I was ready to go to every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I liked it so much that I decided not to talk about it in this article, but to write a separate one. Coming soon to the site :)

GALLERY CAFE

Another place that I liked. This is an old house with a courtyard, located not far from the conservatory, in which tables for visitors are scattered rather randomly: a couple of tables on the second floor veranda, some tables inside, some right in the courtyard, all of them are of different types, with different chairs. No one is in a particular hurry; artists sit at some tables (in full accordance with the name of the cafe), draw something in their albums, laying out paints, and drink tea.

In the evenings Gallery Cafe there are a lot of people, and then it becomes less cozy. Moreover, in the evening it was dark at the tables, and with great difficulty I managed to convince the waitress to bring at least a candle. The best time is during the day, before dark. Then you can sit on the veranda and eat while watching life on the old narrow streets of Tbilisi.

Trout in foil

Not all dishes on the Gallery Cafe menu are equally good, but some are simply wonderful. I strongly recommend trying a salad with cabbage, raisins, bell peppers and apples (5 GEL - 450 tenge), trout in foil with walnuts and spinach (12 GEL - 1080 tenge) or trout in foil with cheese and tarragon - (12.50 GEL - 1125 tenge). And here soviet style cutlets I don’t recommend taking them - mine were too fatty and overcooked with a heavy garlic flavor. Average score - 25 lari per person.

That’s all for now 🙂 Look forward to the continuation of the culinary journey to Georgia on the website soon.

Nahvamdes!
