Sunny Beach (Bulgarian: Sunny Beach) is the largest seaside resort in eastern Bulgaria. Located near a bay in the Black Sea with a beach 10 km long and up to 100 m wide in the central part, covered with fine yellow sand. Located between the cities of Varna (90 km) and Burgas (36 km), it is part of the city (community) of Nessebar, the old part of which is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bulgaria. City buses run between old Nessebar and Sunny Beach (to the northern tip).

The design of the Sunny Beach resort dates back to 1957; construction began in accordance with Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the National Republic of Belarus No. 120 of June 30, 1958. Along with the residential complex, a forest park was designed. 550,000 m³ of fertile soil was delivered to the complex, 300,000 coniferous and broad-leaved trees, 770,000 ornamental shrubs, and 100,000 roses were planted. In the period 1959-1988. 7,699,100 people vacationed at Sunny Beach, including 5,162,600 foreign tourists and 2,536,590 Bulgarian citizens. In the Soviet years, it was prestigious to send children from the USSR and other socialist countries here. At that time, Bulgaria was one of the few foreign countries where children from the USSR could be sent on vacation, since the Iron Curtain existed. In 1989, Sunny Beach had 108 hotels (27,000 beds) and 130 restaurants, many attractions, nightclubs, cafes, bars and discos.

Current state

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the resort began to grow rapidly. As the central area was developed, the main construction area shifted to the north. This determined the modern appearance of the resort: in the central part of Sunny Beach there are cheaper hotels built from Soviet times, and in the north you can often find new, modern and more expensive ones. In recent years, modern hotels have been built on the site of old buildings (including the site of the summer cinema where the Golden Orpheus music festivals took place). Hotel areas are usually open. The Sunny Beach resort complex was awarded the Blue Flag. The beach at the resort is municipal, that is, intended for public use and does not contain closed sections. The beach is separated from the hotels by a pedestrian street - "Promenade". Most of the beach is occupied by sun loungers under umbrellas, which can be used for a fee. Sections of the beach, equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers, are serviced by concessionaires. You can stay for free in areas free of umbrellas and sun loungers: at the very edge of the water or in the part of the beach farthest from the sea (30-100 m from the water). The bottom is sandy, gradually sloping into the depths. Nearest airports and railway stations: Burgas and Varna. Sunny Beach has a bus station with regular flights to cities in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Administrative region: Nessebar municipality. Natural region: Horn of Stara Planina. Nearest city: Nessebar. Nearest resorts: Nessebar, Sveti Vlas, Elenite.
