Path of Love
The Path of Love is a real place of pilgrimage for couples in love. It connects the villages of Manarola and Riomaggiora. This attraction has its own history, which has become a real local legend.
Once these two villages were at enmity with each other, but one day a guy from one village fell in love with a girl from another. Young people met at the source, fell in love, and since then their meetings on the rock have become regular.
The girl soon became pregnant, but her relatives, having learned who the father of the unborn child was, became furious and gathered to kill the young man. She ran forward to warn her lover.
They met again on the rock, but - either by accident or deliberately - fell off the cliff into the abyss. What happened sobered the warring clans, and since then both villages set a course for reconciliation, as a sign of this, laying a path between the villages.
Centuries later, a symbolic monument was erected to the lovers, and this place has gained popularity among lovers and newlyweds. There is also a special lattice on the rock, where you can hang a padlock as a sign of the strength of your love, while making a wish.
In the XII-XIII centuries, Riomaggiore suffered from the raids of the Saracens, so in the middle of the XIII (1260) century, the city authorities ordered the laying of a castle, which would also have a protective function.
The impregnable bastion is located at the highest point to have a good view in case of danger. The construction of fortifications continued until the 17th century.
Later, when the need for defense disappeared, the castle grounds were used for burials. In the 20th century, the ancient cemetery was moved, and the castle is used as great viewing platform.
Ladder Lardarino
The Lardarino Staircase is located in Corniglio and links the city center with the train station. To go down or up stairs, you need to overcome 377 steps.
You can, of course, use the local bus, but it is much more interesting to travel up the stairs and at the same time enjoy the views of the sea coast.
The stairs are quite gentle and the climb will not cause much trouble.
Monastery of the Capuchins
The Capuchin monastery in Monterosso was built at the beginning of the 17th century (1622). During the reign of Napoleon, barracks for his soldiers were located here. In the 19th century, the Capuchins returned here.

Wine Museum

An alternative option is an easy walking path that will take the traveler no more than 4-5 hours and, at the same time, will allow you to get acquainted with all the villages of the Cinque Terre National Park of Italy.

In the modern part of Monterosso, there is the largest city beach in the Cinque Terre, the bottom of which is covered not with stones and pebbles, but with the purest sand.
The title of the most beautiful town of the Cinque Terre was given to the village of Vernazza. The attention of tourists who went to the north of Italy in the Cinque Terre is also attracted by the oldest of the five villages, the village of Manarola. According to legend, the Roman settlement "Manium Arula" once lived here, the name of which in Latin sounds like "the altar of the god Mani." Manarola in its appearance is somewhat similar to Vernazza, but if the latter is located on a rocky hill, then in Manarola the traveler finds rest thanks to the plain. At the same time, it is impossible not to mention the rocky cliff, which received the name "Dark Rock". Protruding a little forward, the "Dark Rock" is in the shadow of a nearby mountain peak, which is why even at noon it is impossible to see a ray of sun on the roofs of houses.
The southernmost of the five villages of the Cinque Terri is Riomaggiore. Speaking of the Cinque Terre, it is impossible not to mention the Path of Love, which in many tourist brochures is referred to as Via dell "Amore and connects Riomaggiore and Manarola. As you might guess, the name of the road is inextricably linked with the tragic legend of lovers. In ancient times, two neighboring settlements (Riomaggiore and Manarola) were at enmity with each other.The reason for the contention was the life-giving spring that flowed in Riomaggiore, from where the locals drew drinking water.There was no such source in Manarola, so the inhabitants of this village wanted to quench their thirst from the spring in Riomaggiore.But not here- that was, the inhabitants of Riomaggiora did not want to share their natural wealth.
According to legend, a young man from Manarola and a girl from Riomaggiora met by chance on a rock and fell in love. However, their relationship was not approved by the girl's family. Once, trying to escape from the family nest, the girl, already carrying a baby under her heart, ran away from home. Relatives wished to return the fugitive to their native walls.
On a rock, located exactly in the middle between Riomaggiore and Manarola, a young man was waiting for her, whom she embraced. The couple could not keep their balance and fell into the sea like a stone. In the morning, the girl's body was washed by the waves on the shore of Manarola, and the young man on the shore of Riomaggiora. Since then, the inhabitants, feeling ashamed and considering that the heavens themselves desire the reconciliation of the two villages, ceased to be at enmity. Italian peasants even decided to build a road along which they could visit each other.

Having started the construction of each of their villages, they converged exactly in the middle, in memory of the young couple they erected a monument, which can still be seen today in the center of Via dell "Amore.

Here, at the very edge of the cliff, there are the main attractions of Vernazza - two ancient defensive towers, although there are a lot of such structures in the city as a whole. Compared to Monterosso, the local beaches are not large, the places for swimming are rather limited. Corniglia (Corniglia)
Corniglia is the smallest of the cities of the Cinque Terre, but it is located at the highest point above sea level (out of five). Unlike Vernazza and other cities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia does not have a port, and it is difficult to get to it by car, so there are two options left - to go by train or walk.
If you are light, then you can climb the footpath from the railway station to the city, tourists with large luggage are better off waiting for the bus, which runs from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm (on weekends from 8:00). One of the most memorable local attractions is the Gothic-style St. Peter's Cathedral, as well as the Chapel of St. Catherine. Manarola (Manarola)

The marina of Riomaggiore is quite large, and from the sea there is a beautiful view of the unusual, but typical of the local cities, multi-storey houses. Particularly attracts the attention of tourists is the castle standing on the top of the Cerrico hill, as well as the beautiful church of St. Giovanni Battista. .
Trails of the Cinque Terre
The Cinque Terre trails are a well-known way to spend time in the area. The trails are several hiking trails connecting all five cities: Riomaggiore - Manarola - Corniglia - Vernazza - Monterosso al Mare. Coastal trails are more popular with hikers than inland trails as rocky seascapes can be seen. The main criterion for hiking is, of course, good weather, and be sure to bring a pair of comfortable shoes and suitable clothing.
All routes are divided into several difficulty levels, it is believed that the coastal paths (all the way from Riomaggiore to Monterosso), the duration of which is approximately 5 hours on foot from one end to the other, are easier than the route through the shrines (visiting local temples and churches).
The coastal path is called the blue path (“Il sentiero azzurro”) and is not very difficult in terms of difficulty. Walking along some trails is paid, so you will have to buy a special card - "Cinque Terre Card", with its help travelers will be able to freely explore all mountain paths and attractions.

Weather and climate in the Cinque Terre
The local climate, as well as throughout Italy, is quite mild. In summer, temperatures can reach up to 40 °C, so sunbathers and dip in the cool sea will not be disappointed. The hottest months are usually July and August. How to get to the Cinque Terre

- By car. If you are traveling in a rented car, there are almost no barriers for you. You can get to the Cinque Terre from Florence (170 km), from Milan (240 km), from Bologna (230 km). The main thing to remember is that almost everywhere there are toll roads. And yet, the closest major city to the national park is Genoa (100 km), so the tour most often starts from there.
- With a tour from Genoa. Before talking about public transport, we recommend a day trip. This is a convenient way to visit the national park and get first-hand information (from local resident Irina). In 10 hours you will see all the "great five" + the town of Portovenere, also protected by UNESCO.
- On the train. from the station Stazione La Spezia Centrale(La Spezia) to the nearest station Riomaggiore the train is running. Travel time is 8-10 minutes. In Riomaggiore, you can get off and go hiking, or continue your journey by train all the way to Monterossa. Route #2: from Riomaggiore to Monterosso
The total hiking time is 6 hours, but tourists prefer to stay in small towns and decide for themselves when to go further. The "Cinque Terre" card, which costs 10 euros, offers unlimited access to museums and allows you to travel by train for one day. The picturesque railway connects the city of La Spezia and the five main cities of the Cinque Terre.
Well, we are, first of all, interested in the walking route:
- Riomaggiore - Manarola (beginning of the route). The "Road of Love" from Riomaggiore to Manarola is the easiest and most beautiful route. It is famous for its tunnel and a statue depicting a kissing couple. The route is only 2 km long and the walk takes about 40 minutes.
- Manarola - Corniglia. It is also a relatively easy 2 km section of the route. On the way there are breathtaking views of the sea and gardens.
- Corniglia - Vernazza. The trail leads to the highest point of the Cinque Terre and then descends. Officially, this path is considered a route of "medium difficulty", as you have to climb steep and uneven stone steps. You can bring a cane or staff with you. The road may seem tiring, but the views in these places are simply amazing. The path passes among lush olive groves and exotic flowers. If you walk at a slow pace, the walk will take 2 hours (the length of the route is 4 km).
- Vernazza - Monterosso. The most difficult and at the same time the most picturesque stretch of 3 km. The road has many narrow passages and stairs, but from there you can see the panorama of all five cities of the Cinque Terre.
How to complete the Cinque Terre itinerary? Very simple: having reached Monterosso, you can take the train, and the next stop will be the final one - the city of Levanto.

Other Cinque Terre routes
Some dream of walking around the Cinque Terre alone, at least not accompanied by a huge crowd of tourists. For this, there are routes No. 3, 6, 7, 8. They include visiting the sanctuaries:
- Nostra Signora di Montenero, which can be reached from Riomaggiore;
- Nostra Signora della Salute in the Manarola area;
- Nostra Signora delle Grazie next to Corniglia;
- Nostra Signora di Reggio and Nostra Signora di Soviore.
Despite the fact that all the sanctuaries are located near the villages, excursions can take about 1.5-2 hours. The roads there are much more difficult than on route number 2.
The most difficult pistes of the Cinque Terre are located in the mountains. These are routes numbered 1, 4, 6, 9, 10. They are intended for experienced tourists, and you rarely meet casual passers-by there. In addition, you need to take a lot of water with you: there are no shops in these places.
When to go, how to dress, what to bring
If you are traveling during the summer, the heat will be the hardest challenge. Therefore, it is most convenient to explore the national park April, May, September or October. During these months, there are much fewer tourists, and the air temperature is more pleasant. Winter is not the best time, as is summer: it often rains, which causes landslides.
Please note: in 2013-2014. part of the Cinque Terre roads were closed due to rockfall, so you need to follow the forecast.
Now let's talk about clothes and the minimum set of tourists. For route number 2, ordinary sneakers are suitable. All other routes will require special hiking boots that keep the foot in the correct position. Do not wear flip flops and high heels. It is better to put essential items in a shoulder bag. Some railway stations offer to leave the main luggage in the luggage rooms. In summer, at the peak of the season, do not go on the road without sunscreen, glasses and a hat.
