Or they simply don’t register you, because... In general, they ask you to show your ticket with your passport.
You will quite rightly object that this is why it is electronic, so as not to print! Of course, you will be right a hundred times, but this argument will not be an argument at all for a policeman in an African country, a check-in counter operator at a small Indian airport or a passport control officer in Dubai, Macau, the USA or Malaysia... But the thing is that we are used to did not print anything and relaxed and flew off to their next trip, without even thinking about Googling the features and nuances of the travel route.
And they arise at the most unexpected moment.

This is why I recommend printing tickets, at least when traveling abroad.
Although sometimes difficulties may arise on domestic flights in its absence.
In principle, the IATA rules do not clearly state the need to print a ticket.
On the other hand, when purchasing an electronic ticket through various services, you receive a letter with a ticket form and recommendations, one of which is precisely the need for printing.
The fact is that failures are possible everywhere and when your ticket is suddenly not found during registration, a printout will be an invaluable help, it will save time and nerves - according to the data in it, employees will be able to find the ticket faster (this happened to me - there was only 10 time left until the end of registration minutes, so I had a real risk of not being able to fly).

It is very important to have a printed ticket during complex flights with transfers or transit through certain countries. For example, when transiting through Macau without a visa, at check-in for a flight to Macau you will definitely be asked to show your ticket to make sure that you are flying onward.
The same applies when transiting through Dubai or other points where you can get a transit visa. Without confirmation of flight to a third country, you will not be given a visa or released from the airport.

At some airports (for example, in the USA), proof of flight may be required to be presented to aviation security at security control before entering check-in. And in many African countries, a printed ticket is required to enter the airport. The police check it with your passport and those who do not have a ticket are not allowed into the airport. I have seen this in Addis Ababa and Kilimanjaro Airport.

In general, I once again recommend not to take risks and try to print out your ticket before your trip so that it is not overshadowed by showdowns or sudden problems. Yes, sometimes having a ticket on your iPad or smartphone can help, but sometimes they still ask for a paper version...
