Can chub be caught with a spoon? The best spinners and wobblers for chub. Lures from SV Fishing lures

  1. ACME Vob L Rite 3.5 g. This vibrator has good flight characteristics and convincing play. The main fishing options for such a spoon are drift fishing and fishing against the current, as well as along the coastline near trees and bushes. It is catchable with one hook and a treble.
  1. River Old Ultra Vespa 2.8 g. This spoon is suitable for fishing with ultralight and light spinning rods. Basically, it is fished with one hook. The bait performs well when fishing in the middle current with slow retrieval. Wiring can be done both against the flow and transversely. Despite its light weight, this lure flies far and accurately.

  1. Forest Crystal 2 g. This bait creates a splash when entering the water, which should attract the chub. The spoon is used mainly when fishing along the grass and in shallow water. In addition to chub, large perch respond well to it. Initially, this spoon comes with one hook, but you can also install a tee when fishing in cleaner areas, free from vegetation.
  1. God Hands Area Dragon 3 g. The spinner demonstrates active play even on slow retrieves and flies well. When it falls, it produces a characteristic slap. The bait is suitable for uniform, torn retrieve with or without pauses.

  1. Daiwa Presso Rave 2.5 g. The original diamond-shaped spoon has a single hook. It is suitable for fishing in small water areas in medium and fast currents. Most effective for cross-flow wiring. Plays well underwater and is suitable for fishing at medium and shallow depths from 1 to 2 meters.

Places for catching chub on spoons

It is convenient to catch chub in narrow rivers. You can quickly find promising points and zones and fish them tightly. Among such places, first of all, we note riffles that turn into a pool, shady areas near trees hanging over the water, coastal dumps where the current intensifies, places behind large stones and fallen trees.

Note that there are more than enough such places on fast-flowing rivers. But the beauty of catching chub with spinning baits is that there is no point in staying in one place for more than 10 minutes. The first retrieve is the most promising and is the one most often taken by the chub. After an unsuccessful attempt to catch a handsome redfin on a wobbler, we make the next trip with a small jig. Sometimes he takes better on small bait when he is not hungry.

Sometimes a chub is caught at those moments when we catch an asp. In principle, places in the area of dumps and rifts and with reverse flow are also considered ulcerative. There you can also find large perch and even small sabrefish.

The most promising time for fishing chub on spoons is considered to be evening and night. At this time, weighty individuals ranging from 700 grams to 1.5 kg are encountered. During daylight hours, the chub takes no less actively, but only in its “own” places.

How to choose a spoon for a chub?

The overwhelming number of spinning anglers believe that it is better to catch chub on small spinners weighing up to 3-4 grams and up to 3-4 cm long. In principle, they are right in many respects, since the chub is a fish that is better taken on surface and actively playing baits. To be honest, all the baits for this kind of chub fishing can be placed in a small box.

Initially, small spoons and other micro spinning baits were intended for trout fishing. You can catch this obstinate fish in fast-flowing mountain rivers and on pay zones. But it turned out that chub are also successfully caught with the same baits. In fact, this is not surprising, since the habits and hunting style of these fish are largely similar. The chub also loves areas of rivers with fast currents and the objects of its hunt are small rudd and roach.

It has been noted more than once that chub respond better to bright and even acidic vibrations. This method is very effective when the bait is thrown into the shade created by trees or bushes. Often the chub attacks the spoon while it is falling. It turns out that even in sunny weather you can catch chub well in shady places. We moved to a well-lit area - changed the spoon to a faded or dark one of the same model and continued fishing. In cloudy weather, do not change bright baits. In such conditions, chub prefer acidic models.

Sometimes the chub demonstrates increased activity and confidently takes bright baits even in clear water. This picture is observed in the spring and autumn, closer to winter, when the food supply in the form of larvae and other animal components is not as rich as in summer.

There are some lures that demonstrate unstable play when retrieved evenly. These are the well-known models Little Cleo 3.5 g and Mepps Cyclop 00. Chub take them very often, especially during periods of increased activity.

Among the dark and dim colors of the vibrators, we note black, lilac, burgundy and brown matte models.

Many models of vibrators are equipped with one hook. This configuration of baits is completely justified. The chub has a large and fleshy mouth. If he swallows a small spoon, then it will certainly be caught by a hook, even a small one, on the lips. It often takes a long time to remove the bait from the fish's mouth. The presence of extractors and other auxiliary tools for chub fishing is mandatory.

Some spinning anglers use lures with barbless hooks. Such models are used for trout fishing. They do not injure the fish's mouth and are easily removed from the mouth. Don't worry about the fish breaking off. Practice has shown that the number of chub landing on such spoons is minimal.

Let us note this nuance regarding the entry of the bait into the water. Sometimes the chub reacts well to the splash of the bait. Yes, it can be a crank, wobbler and popper. But for some reason, in cold water, chub catch better on oscillating spoons. As soon as you can pick up a chub bait that makes a loud sound when entering the water, confident attacks will follow. It has been noted that when fishing in March or late autumn in cold water, spinners with low-frequency action work better. At this time, the chub cranks are, one might say, silent.

Spinning rod equipment for catching chub using oscillating spoons

For chub fishing, a light rod with a weight of up to 10 grams and a length of 2.1 to 2.4 meters is most often used. Ultralight with dough up to 7 grams and a length of 1.8 -2.1 meters is also applicable. Most often, fishing takes place along narrow and medium-width rivers. Casts are made no further than 20 meters, so it is better to use a soft, sensitive parabolic. These are good for making small jerks and convenient for fishing near bushes and thickets.

We use an inertia-free reel with a spool capacity of 2000. The winding speed is not so important. Let it wind 50 cm in one turn, the main thing is that the cord with a cross-section of 0.1 mm is wound evenly. The breaking load of the cord is 5-6 kg. A fluorocarbon line with a diameter of 0.16-0.2 mm is also wound onto the spool. It is more rigid, does not stretch or twist.

Another nuance associated with summer chub fishing. As mentioned above, fishing often takes place along trees, bushes and other vegetation. Often, any debris from plants gets onto the surface of the water. It is especially unpleasant to catch when there is a lot of fluff. It sticks to the fence, and when the cord is unwinded, it clogs the rings. If you twist the reel and do not watch what is happening on the rings, trouble can happen. When the top ring becomes clogged with lint, the cord will have difficulty passing through the ring. If you do not remove dirt from the rings in time, the Quitertype may be damaged during winding and even break. From this point of view, it is better to fly-fish. The fluff doesn't cling to it as much and is easier to remove.

When fishing for chub, you usually do not use a leash. It is better to fish with more sensitive gear, especially since spinners already have more modest playing properties compared to spinners. It is better to attach the lure to a metal carabiner of this type tied to the main fishing line:

Features of summer and autumn chub fishing with spoons

A typical example of summer fishing, when after 8 hours the chub bite is over, and the fish takes shady places near trees and feeds on insects. Catching chub at such moments with surface baits such as cranks and wobblers is not particularly successful. You can only try poppers that clap like New Year's crackers. It also happens that walkers show themselves. But still, vibrators weighing 3-5 grams are best suited in such situations. Practice has shown that it is on them that the chub catches best.

In summer, it is best to catch chub using spoons near the algae. It often happens that a spinner, going just above the grass, becomes the object of hunting for a stagnant chub, languishing from idleness. This is why a single hook is preferred. It passes through thickets of grass and even some snags with relative ease. When fishing in such areas, it is sometimes better to use non-hook baits.

Another promising area for summer chub fishing with spoons is beaches with sandy shores. In such places the bottom drops evenly and is shallow along the shore. In such places, light baits that enter the water very quietly work better. The light oscillator sinks smoothly and the attack follows sharp and decisive. You need to understand that the chub is a fish that counts on gifts from the sky. Berries, insects and other food that fall into the water often do not reach the bottom and end up in the mouth of this fish. Therefore, a vibrator is selected that slowly falls and even hangs a little in the water. Models with a wide petal have similar properties.

In the autumn, when fishing for chub, some spinners set the minimum goal - to get away from zero. And in vain. In autumn, the water becomes clear, and the food supply decreases every day. Simply put, the chub has less food. Mulberries or cherries no longer fall from the sky for him. There are already few beetles and no butterflies. That's why predators switch to fry. This is what you should use. It is very important to be able to approach a place in such a way as not to scare a school of fish.

The chub can also stay in more distant areas. The fisherman's task is to dress in camouflage clothing and quietly approach the place and hide behind bushes or other vegetation. The noisy barbecue and vodka format of fishing will not work here, and you will not get away from zero. It is after such fishing that you can hear from some that “now the chub doesn’t take it anymore.” It is extremely important to use models that demonstrate measured and not very active play during wiring.

Technique for catching chub using spoons

Having figured out a little about how to choose a spinner for a chub, we’ll find out how best to guide the spinners. When we fish with spoons, we clearly understand that in the water this flat piece plans more and demonstrates mainly low-frequency play. To attract chub, it is necessary to use more playful spinners and use different types of wiring.

For example, uniform retrieving at low speed is most often used for catching passive chub when it is not particularly hungry. A slow-swimming fry is an easy prey, and the chub understands this well and attacks it. If the bait goes at high speed, then a well-fed chub will not even pay attention to it. The technique of catching chub using spoons in this case is similar to fishing for passive ide, when a leisurely retrieve with long pauses is required.

If we fish in a strong current, on riffles, then sometimes we don’t need to turn the reel. It is enough to simply release the spoon with the current, and the chub will take it in the area where the current slows down. It is best to cast the bait on the border between slow and fast currents. There the concentration of fish is high and if you hit it accurately, the chub can immediately take the spoon.

In strong currents, it is useful to pause, stopping the movements of the baits. The chub will have a good chance of catching up with the “sweet bun” leaving it. Naturally, you need to make allowances for the depth at the fishing location and the weight of the spinner. At depths greater than 3 meters, you can try heavier spoons. The chub often attacks a sharply falling bait, and maybe the ide will catch up too. At great depths, you can experiment and use a full arsenal of oscillators.

We pay special attention to wiring at the border of fast and slow currents. Torn wiring with a change in rotation speed is effective in such places. This technique of catching chub with spoons is effective on turns and on river riffles. We also pay attention to pauses, or rather their length. During stops, the bait falls. The lighter it is, the slower it will fall. If the petal is also oval or round, then the fall will last. It is at such moments that you should expect bites. Don’t forget that we have a limited number of attempts, so we try to accurately throw the bait and confidently carry out the retrieve.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my fishing blog! It’s been a while since I pleased you with useful articles, I’ll try to improve. Today I will tell you what baits you need to use for catching chub so as not to be left without a catch. What baits generally exist, which ones work best, in different fishing conditions and in different bodies of water. The main way to catch chub is with a spinning rod. Let’s look at what baits should be used for such fishing, which baits are the most catchy and successful. We will also go over seasonal baits, artificial and natural. Spring is the beginning of a new season of fishing with wobblers and spoons. You need to review your arsenal and prepare everything. Which wobblers will you need from the beginning of the season, and which ones after. As the season approaches, you will first need deep-sea baits, called dips.

Chub, like other predators, can be caught using a large arsenal of baits. These include spinners with different functionality, jig heads, offset hooks with silicone fish, etc. Among the entire arsenal of baits, preference is often given to wobblers. And no wonder. Their main advantage is their catchability, wide selection, and durability when used correctly.

The chub is a large fish from the carp family. To successfully catch it, you should know what baits and lures a fisherman should use. This is exactly what will be discussed in this article.

The chub is a coveted trophy for many spinners. This fish, living in many rivers of our country, has a wide range of nutrition.

The chub can feed on aerial insects, aquatic invertebrates, under certain conditions, aquatic vegetation, as well as fish fry. This is where a fisherman stalks him with a spinning rod equipped with a spinning reel, a fishing line or cord wound on its spool and a box full of delicious baits.

What is so attractive about the chub as an object of amateur fishing?

This fish is characterized by powerful bites, comparable in sensations to the bites of salmon fish. When played, he proves himself to be a worthy opponent. But catching him is not so easy. You need to have a good understanding of the tactics of chub hunting and, of course, have a sufficient supply of bait, among which rotating and oscillating spoons play an important role.

The best natural baits for catching chub

  1. Sweet dough.
  2. Peas (steamed).
  3. Grain (steamed).
  4. Corn (canned and boiled).
  5. Potatoes (necessarily boiled).
  6. Algae (with a filamentous structure).
  7. Gooseberry.
  8. Berries of cherries, mulberries and black currants.
  9. White bread. It is recommended to use only its top feed, since the flesh does not stick well to the hook.

The best baits of animal origin are:

  1. Salo.
  2. Veal liver (raw).
  3. Chicken giblets.
  4. Fish eyes.
  5. Raw fish (meat).
  6. Malek: bleak, gudgeon, dace, small crucian carp.
  7. Crawling out. It is a very large worm that is dark pink in color and about thirty centimeters long. Only large chubs bite on this bait. It is recommended to place them on double hooks.
  8. Chafer. It's not at all difficult to catch him. It is found in gardens above fruit trees in May. The cockchafer is an excellent bait for chub, which always actively bites on it. You need to hook such a beetle by its abdomen so that it can move its legs and attract the attention of the fish.
  9. Summer beetle. It is found in wheat fields and resembles the May beetle, only this beetle is a little smaller in size. The summer beetle flies in June.
  10. Caterpillars. They can come in a variety of sizes and colors. It is best to use smooth caterpillars that do not have hairs on their bodies. These include caterpillars that infest cabbage or strawberries. Such bait should be placed on the hook very carefully so that its body is not damaged and it can move on the hook and attract attention to itself.
  11. Grasshopper. It is a very effective bait not only for chub, but also for other types of fish. You can catch grasshoppers in fields or meadows. It is best to use brown grasshoppers with short antennae. Grasshoppers should be planted behind their body. The legs should be removed and the wings spread. Large chubs bite on this bait.
  12. Butterflies. It is best to use moths, since they are larger and have small wings. It is necessary to use such a nozzle in those ponds that are located near forests or a large amount of vegetation. Casting with bait in the shape of a butterfly should be done very carefully so that it is not damaged by a strong blow to the water surface, since a dead butterfly will be less attractive to the chub than a living one.
  13. Leeches. You can use both black and brown leeches. They need to be collected from swampy ponds or shallow areas of reservoirs. It is recommended to attach the leech in the middle of the hook so that it can move in the water and attract the attention of the chub.
  14. Toothless. It is a small mollusk that lives in reservoirs with a sandy bottom. It is not the mollusk itself that should be hooked, but its inner part. To do this, you should pick the clam with a knife and remove the meat component from there. Then it needs to be dried a little and cut into pieces.
  15. Cancer. To catch him you should use a crayfish catcher or catching a river inhabitant with your hands. There is no need to hook the crayfish completely. It is enough just to remove the meat from its tail and use it as a bait. Both medium and large chubs can peck on it.

Artificial baits

In addition to natural baits, you can also use artificial baits to catch chub.

Wobblers

  1. Wobblers can be used in different fishing conditions.
  2. They can be used more than once.
  3. Wobblers can be used for different fishing methods.

There are many varieties of such baits, which allows the fisherman to choose exactly the wobbler that he needs.

Wobblers are very effective baits because they completely imitate the appearance and habits of live fish.

Wobblers are easy to use and do not require much experience from the fisherman.

Spoons

They have the following advantages of their use:

  1. have a large variety;
  2. easy to use;

Where to apply

The chub is a typical rheophile, that is, a fish that lives in running water. He likes to stay on the current - on rapids, at exits and entrances to rapids, on the reverse current, in various whirlpools formed by the turbulence of water around underwater obstacles - stones, fallen trees, bridge supports. The chub likes to stand on a flat stream without any visible fluctuations in the current. The spinner must have a good understanding of where to correctly place the lure and what trajectory it should be taken along. Regardless of whether an angler is fishing from the shore or from a boat, it is always necessary to take the correct position.

Requirements for baits

Chub baits must have the following characteristics: Stable work. No matter what kind of lure you fish with, it should hold the stream well. If the spoon is brought to the surface during fishing, then it is not suitable for catching chub. The spinner should start instantly and work stably throughout the entire retrieve. Bites often follow when the spinner is playing on the verge of a petal failure - this feature of the spoon should also be taken into account when choosing a bait.

Range. Chub is a rather cautious fish, so casting range is important. In this parameter, spinners are superior to wobblers, so in certain cases they should be preferred. Casting accuracy. There are often situations when the bait needs to be placed exactly in the place where the fish splashes. Of course, the spinning angler must have a good casting ability, but the type of bait is also important. Spoons, especially oscillating ones, have an advantage over other baits, particularly in windy weather.

Spinners Fishing with rotating spoons is the easiest, so a novice chub hunter should start with it. The fishing industry provides us with a truly unlimited selection of baits. What lures do you recommend and what should you pay attention to first?

Spinner size. It is believed that the chub is more inclined to respond to small baits, so the size of the pinwheel petal varies from 00 to 2.

Important! The size of the petal depends not so much on the size of the intended trophy, but on the activity of the fish. The more passive the chub, the smaller the spinners should be used.

Petal shape. It is generally accepted that the Aglia Long petal shape (according to the Mepps classification) works best in a stream. This is true, and its depth will be maximum, however, sometimes it is required that the spoon stay as close to the surface of the water as possible, and in this case a spoon with an Aglia-shaped petal will help out. The Comet petal is intermediate between these two types of petals. When rotated, the Aglia Long petal deviates from the axis by 30 degrees, and the Aglia petal deviates by 60 degrees. Shape and size of the core. This characteristic is no less important for successful fishing than the above. The heavier the core, the deeper the spoon will go. Aglia Long Heavy spinners and almost all Myran spinners have heavy cores. Unloaded spinners are of little use for catching chub.

On sale you can find spinners with an eccentric (fish-shaped) core. These are Niakis and Daiwa Silver Creek turntables. They are characterized by excellent flight characteristics and stable operation in currents. Petal color. The color of the petal can be decisive when catching chub. In different rivers and in different fishing conditions, the angler must select the color of the bait independently. This depends on the color of the water and the feeding habits of the chub, as well as on the weather during fishing.

Black baits almost always work well. The chub is also partial to the color red. Among unpainted baits, we can recommend copper, then brass and, last but not least, silver baits. Sometimes “acid” colors can also work.

Interesting. A very popular color among trout fishermen and grayling fishermen, the Black Fury color scheme is not very popular among chub hunters. Perhaps the chub prefers more monochromatic colors. Rotating spinner design. In addition to the well-known rotating spinners, in which the petal is attached to the axis by means of a clamp, there are so-called In-Line spinners. The petal is located directly on the axis of the rotating spoon. These are lures from the Panter Martin brand. These turntables operate stably at any current. Another advantage of In-Line spinners is that they freely bypass obstacles and fight off branches, snags and stones lying on the bottom. Fly on a hook. Among anglers, there are supporters of spinners with a fly or wab on a tee and supporters of fishing without one. It seems that under specific fishing conditions it is necessary to try both options and empirically find out what exactly the chub prefers. A fly on a hook stabilizes the work of the spinner, but reduces its flight characteristics.

Popular models of spinners for fishing (our top 10+)

Mepps spinners

traditionally top the hit parade. A wide selection of colors, spoons with and without flies - the angler has plenty to choose from. Aglia, Comet, Aglia Long, Thunder Bug - you can always choose the most suitable spoon for catching chub.

Myran spinners are also worthy of mention. Agat, Mira, Panter, Tony, Akka - each of these spinners has a core that is unique in its design. The petals of all these spinners have different shapes. For example, Tony has holes made along the edge of the petal to create acoustic vibrations, and in addition there is a red fly on the tee.

Myran turntables have excellent range. It is recommended to use them when fishing in deep sections of the river.

Attention! The trade offers a wide range of spinners from Chinese manufacturers. It must be remembered that they are made not of non-ferrous, but of ferrous metal. Their catchability is lower, and their work in the current is not always flawless.

The Blue Fox Vibrax spinners, which have long been known to anglers, show mediocre results in relation to chub.

Oscillating spoons

In recent years, fishing with micro-spinners has gained popularity. This hobby first arose among rainbow trout fishermen, and later spread to anglers hunting for perch, ide and chub. Micro-oscillators have proven themselves well when catching chub, especially in the fall. Experienced chub fishermen say that at times a microscroller is the only type of bait that can tempt a predator. These lures have advantages that wobblers and spinners do not have. Firstly, as standard, they are all equipped with a single hook, so they are less susceptible to snags, although, unfortunately, the execution of bites suffers. Secondly, casting the micro-oscillator will be the most accurate and farthest, which, as emphasized, is sometimes important. Oscillating spoons are best used in deeper sections of the river. Neither turntables nor wobblers can compare with the wide range of colors of spinners. Almost all top micro-oscillators are produced in Japan and are not cheap. Leading brands are Nories, Smith, Water Land, SV Fishing Lures, Daiwa. More budget copies are made in China - Kosadaka, Stinger.

Do-it-yourself catchy bait

To make a micro-oscillator with your own hands, you need special equipment and materials. Making a spinner is much easier. The process of making a spinner for chub is no different from that of making spinners for catching other predators. The tools that will be required for the work are metal scissors (tailor's scissors), a hammer, round nose pliers, pliers, wire cutters, a teaspoon, and a drill. The following materials are needed to make a turntable: sheet copper, brass or cupronickel, steel wire, copper wire, lead weights, beads, treble hooks, primer and nitro paint.

The manufacturing process of a rotating spoon consists of several stages:

A petal of the required size is cut from a sheet of metal. Using a hammer in a teaspoon, it is given the desired shape. Holes are drilled in the upper part of the petal. The copper wire is flattened to make it flat. A small piece is cut off and a hole is drilled on both sides. The piece of wire is bent and the clamp for attaching the petal is ready. As a core, you can use an oblong lead sinker with a through hole.

Another option for making a core is to wind copper wire around a steel wire axis. Assembling the spoon: steel wire is threaded through the hook and twisted around its eye; put on the bead, then the core (see point 6); another bead is put on, then a collar with a petal; a loop is made at the free end of a piece of steel wire - the spoon is ready; if necessary, the spinner is painted. To do this, the petal is first coated with a primer, and then a layer or two of nitro varnish is applied. The petal can be painted on one (outer) side or both. If desired, you can apply any design on top of the paint.

Healthy. The fly on the hook can be tied from fly fishing materials (feathers, lurex) or simply wound with red woolen thread. Nowadays there are high-quality tees on sale with a fly already tied on the tee.

How to catch chub

To successfully catch chub, you need a spinning rod of not too fast action, a size 2000 reel equipped with a braided cord or fluorocarbon, although a beginner can try his hand with monofilament fishing line.

When fishing from the shore, wading boots or waders are advisable.

The most commonly used technique for catching chub with a spinning rod: casting the bait down and across the current at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, perhaps at a slightly smaller angle, and retrieving it extremely slowly at the required depth until the moment when the line stretches along the stream. Chub bites are usually felt as a heavy blunt blow most often and occur on this trajectory-arc connecting the point where the bait falls and the final point when it is retrieved. A medium-sized chub bites sharply; the bite of large specimens can be felt as a hook, which then begins to move. Chub hunting is an interesting and exciting activity that requires the angler to be smart, resourceful and skillful. The chub is quite capricious and not everyone can find the key to it. It’s all the more pleasant to feel a blow to your hand and feel how a beautiful and strong fish is walking at the other end of the fishing line. Chub meat is not highly valued by fishermen, so many people practice the “catch and release” principle, giving other fans the opportunity to also enjoy catching this predator.

WHERE TO LOOK FOR CHUB ON A RESERVOIR

Medium depth and surface baits should be left for later. In spring, there is little vegetation on the shore of the reservoir that can protect the angler from fish. There are a lot of dry branches and grass on the shore that make noise if you step on them. All this scares away the fish. You need to be on the shore so that the fish don’t notice you. It’s better to sit down and cast in this position. You also need to have a release with you so that you can calmly and without unnecessary noise release the bait from the hook.

The main habitats of the chub in early spring are in shelter near the bottom, or under a steep bank.

Deep holes. There are deep holes in all rivers where chub can be found, and it is impossible to pass by such places. This is where minnows for deep fishing with negative buoyancy come in handy. They have casting accuracy and good fish appeal. True, wobblers with a large shovel lose their smooth flight, they resist the air flow and because of this, their flight range is lost. Therefore, for long casts it is better to use wobblers with negative buoyancy. Cranks and floating minnows cannot quickly reach the desired depth, and this can have a negative effect on the behavior of the fish. Here again the sinking wobbler wins.

Fishing on a riffle. On the rifts you can fish with absolutely all baits; wobblers, flies and spinners work here. But only when the chub is hungry. The rest of the time, you should try to entice the chub to attack. You won't find a better minnow bait here. Lures for deep fishing perform well.

They can be carried out almost at the very bottom. You need to move the bait against the current. Using arc retrieval or playing with the tip of a spinning rod, keeping the bait in one place. In this case, it is imperative to stand above the fishing area of the reservoir.

How to fish with free line:

  • Look for places with fast currents. There the water is well saturated with oxygen.
  • You need to first feed the fish so that it is not afraid to take the bait.
  • The bait should not leave whisker marks on the water, so as not to scare the fish.
  • Places with large fish need to be fished several times a day. Large fish swim alone and can come to a place several times a day.
  • If it doesn’t bite well, then you need to slightly submerge the bait, this will tempt the fish to bite.

Bites are more active in the evening hours. At this time, many insects fall into the water, and the fish look for them. To prevent the bread from sinking quickly, you need to place a small ball of foam on the hook.

The gear for such fishing should be light and simple. Because you will have to walk a lot in search of fish. Light spinning rods work well. With a longer rod, hooking may not work. The chub is also a heat-loving fish and stays in warm areas of the reservoir.

The chub is caught using wobblers and spinners, but it ignores twisters, spoons, vibrating tails, and poppers. Let's take a closer look at these baits.

SPINNERS OR ROTATING SPOONS

The most popular lures for catching chub are wobblers, microjigs and their varieties. It’s not for nothing that spinners are among the leaders in terms of catchability. When they rotate, they make a noise that immediately attracts gambling predators. Petals are suitable in sizes from 1 to 3; on large currents it is better to use petal size 3.

Turntables come with two types of cores. These are old milled cores and new cast ones. The new cores have a plus: they cast further and play in the water is better. And they can be used at different depths. If you do not take into account small nuances, then there is no difference between spinners for catching chub and ide.

“Spinners” for chub. Chub can also be caught using spoons, such as “spinners”. For this, spinners are suitable - the same as for catching perch and ide. Here you just need to redo them a little. Since the fish have a small mouth, it is better to change the hooks on the spoons to smaller ones. A size or two smaller. Or use smaller spoons.

If you do not take into account small nuances, then there is no difference between spinners for catching chub and ide.

The color of the baits differs slightly depending on the preferences of the fish. The chub prefers standard colors, these are golden and silver. You also need to choose a spinner with fast rotation of the petals.

The rotation speed depends on the depth of stamping of the petal. The deeper it is, the slower it will rotate. After checking the lure near the shore, you can correct it yourself. You should also have a spinner with slow rotation in your arsenal. This is the one in case you have to lead the spoon against the current.

It must be taken into account that rapid rotation of the petal against the flow creates a buzzing sound. Which can scare away the white predator. In the game of spinners, the main thing is the speed of rotation, not noise and vibration.

Spinner baits with a weighted core work well. Nowadays you can find many varieties and brands. Such spoons behave better when fishing both against and across the current. And you can also throw them further.

There are spinner spoons with heads in front. Such front-weighted spinners are primarily designed for catching predatory fish rather than white predators.

When remaking the spinners yourself, you need to remember that a mistake of one gram will lead to poor play in the water and will only scare away the fish.

Microspinners They perform well in small areas that are not overgrown with grass and do not have a strong current. When fishing with a spoon, you can increase its mass without changing the size of the bait. Only with the onset of darkness did the bite become weaker.

The main competitors of spinners are crank wobblers.

But they have a difference in scope. “Spinners” are mainly used on reservoirs and large rivers.

Their advantages include the following:

  • Long casts help you find a predator faster.
  • You can make more accurate casts, right under the fish’s nose.
  • The spinner costs two to three times less than wobblers.

Well, with close-range retrieves, spinners and wobblers work the same way. Therefore, a fisherman should have different baits in his arsenal.

LET'S CONSIDER LURES FOR CHUB FISHING - wobblers

On small rivers, such baits for catching chub perform well - like small wobblers, without extraneous noise. If the chub does not have a big appetite, then the bait is not enough right away. He will watch her carefully, take a closer look. And only after making sure of her safety will he attack her. Therefore, you need to carefully approach the size of the bait, the speed of the retrieve, and the behavior of the fisherman on the pond.

Wobblers are less versatile than spoons. Their use depends on the body of water where you plan to fish. And if you choose the right wobbler, it will outperform any other bait in terms of catchability. Wobblers have a more interesting game and varied play.

The hooks of wobblers are a weak point. Therefore, when purchasing a bait, inspect it and, if necessary, replace the hooks and treble hooks with stronger or larger ones. No matter what, they didn’t unbend when fishing, and the fish clung to them well. If the chub gets hurt and breaks loose, then it will attack this bait a second time, and it will no longer attack in this place. Therefore, always be prepared for a predator to strike from the very first bait retrieve.

Wobblers have their advantages. You can carry out different wiring with them. The fish bite well on both cranks and minnows. The shad are good for catching both with a uniform retrieve and with jerks. Chub are better caught with high-frequency wobblers and shad-class wobblers.

Now let's talk about the advantages of wobblers:

  • They have better buoyancy.
  • Thanks to this, they are better freed from snags.
  • Wobblers can be floated downstream.

Among chub wobblers, “cranks” perform best. Their size and peculiar game immediately attracts fish. Wobblers are also caught with minnow-class wobblers, but much less often. The size of the bait depends on the size of the reservoir; the larger the river, the larger the size of the bait should be and vice versa.

Wobblers are divided into different degrees of buoyancy, which are responsible for their behavior in water:

  • F (floatig) - Floating.
  • SP (suspending) - Neutral buoyant
  • SS (slow sinking) - Slowly sinking
  • S (sinkig) - Drowning.

With sinking wobblers you can pinpoint the areas of interest. They immediately get to work and do not arouse suspicion among the fish.

Floating wobblers work well in hard-to-reach places under overhanging trees and bushes. It’s good to float them downstream to the right place. This is usually done on the rifts, throwing the bait above the current. By adjusting the direction with the rod tip and reel.

The most common lures for catching chub are cranks, spinners, poppers and walkers. If you choose a cord or fishing line, then a cord is better, but the thinner it is, the better; a 3 kg tensile test will be enough. You will be able to cast the bait further, there will be no windage, and the bait will play well. It is better to do the wiring monotonously, without stopping.

It takes baits with a weight of up to 2 grams well; in general, chub respond better to light baits than to large ones. After all, its main prey is sprat and bleak, or other similar small fish, depending on the reservoir and its inhabitants.

The chub is a very shy fish, and in clean and clear water it does not come close to the shore or boat. Therefore, you need to cast the bait further. In order not to scare the fish once again, be sure to use a fluorocarbon leash; it will not be noticeable in the water. But if there are waves or ripples on the reservoir, then it makes sense to fish in places closer to the shore.

Wobblers such as:

Jackal Bros , Maria , Srike Pro , Yo-Zury have a sound filling that attracts fish. Such baits need to be used in large areas, especially with muddy water. Because otherwise it will only scare away the chub, because not a single insect that the chub feeds on makes such sounds.

It is difficult to provoke fish sitting at depth to attack. To get it to bite, you need to hold the bait right in front of the fish. And for this you need to have baits with different depths in your arsenal.

Wobbler "butterfly". This is a wobbler that looks like a butterfly with one wing and a capsule inside. There are balls inside the capsule. On the water, the wobbler is positioned either vertically or horizontally, depending on the tension of the braid. A wobbler perfectly imitates an insect that has fallen into the water and cannot take off. But it can only be used in a body of water without a current. During the current there will not be the game that is needed and will look like an insect. This bait also has its disadvantages. She has small hooks, so frequent breakdowns occur. And you need to increase the hooks carefully; with a large hook, the game may be disrupted, and it will no longer attract fish.

Topwaters. These baits include all baits floating on the surface. These include poppers, walkers, crawlers, surface cranks, and wobblers with a reverse blade. These baits work well when the chub rises to the top to search for food. You can catch them especially successfully at night in pits. Retrieve slowly; at night, the chub takes the bait carefully. Also at night you have a better chance of catching big fish. And in the evening you can fish in shallow water and riffles. At this time, the chub becomes active in search of food. On large rivers you can also catch chub in shallow water.

JIG LURES FOR CHUB FISHING

Jig heads. Lures for catching chub, jig heads, also work well. But this is rather an exception and applies to certain places in the reservoir. These are mainly medium and small rivers, exits from pits, narrowing of the channel. Chub can be caught on them all winter, but only in warm, non-freezing rivers. Lures of bright colors, green and red, perform best.

Microjig. This is a certain type of small bait, no more than 2 cm. The same jigs, very small. Some fishermen use jigs with maggots or worms, or artificial ones, for fishing. Such baits are more effective in spring and autumn. But in the summer they show themselves worse than other chub baits.

In the spring, after the ice melts, when the water begins to lighten, the chub still stays at depth and does not show much aggression. In autumn, the chub goes to wintering pits. And in such places, microjig outperforms other baits.

It is best to use such baits when fishing one place, a supposed chub camp. It does not scare away the fish and you can successfully catch several fish in one place. Walking fishing with such bait will not bring much success.

UNDERWATER JIG FOR CHUB FISHING

Micro tap. This is a rig that does not use swivels and carabiners. To prepare, tie a loop of thin fishing line to the braid. A sinker is tied to the short end, and a bait is tied to the long end, its length is up to 0.5 meters: fly, foam rubber, maggot. This type of rig can be cast further and is easier to handle than a micro jig. But in narrow places such equipment will not be convenient.

Splitshot. This is a non-snagging rig that is best used among weeds or snags. This is how it is done. You need to tie a leash made of fishing line to the braided line. An offset hook with a thin bait - a twister or a worm - is attached to it. You need to attach a pellet 20 centimeters above the bait.

Spider imakatsu. Judging by the name, it also looks like an insect that has fallen into the water, and the bite does not take long to arrive. The bait is made of silicone and a floating head with a hook antenna. This bait is used in reservoirs without current or where it is weak. It is enough just to move it in the water so that it attracts fish. The disadvantages of this bait are the same as the “butterfly”.

Large chub can take larger baits, for example, for catching pike or pike perch. Basically, you can catch such fish at a depth of 5-8 meters. Prefers colors: bright, yellow, lemon shades. The bait is taken during a pause in the retrieve with a powerful blow. Then they resist for a long time, not yielding to the fisherman.

CATCHING CHUB WITH LIVE LIFE

Lures for catching chub - live bait. It is better to use a gudgeon as live bait; it is more tenacious and behaves actively in the water, trying to swim away. You can fish with live bait by retrieving, lowering the bait halfway. The most popular size of live bait is 5 cm fish. Larger ones run the risk of breaking off when casting.

To avoid breakdowns, you need to place live bait on a rig with two or three hooks. Hooks along the body, behind the back and fins.

You can also make equipment with removable additional hooks. To do this, you need to tie a carabiner to the fishing line, and attach the hooks to it.

A float for such fishing is suitable with a carrying capacity of 12 grams; it is enough to attach one pellet to the leash. The main line has a diameter of 0.18 mm, the leash should be set to 0.14 mm.

The chub should be released under overhanging trees, on riffles, between rocks. After lowering the bait downstream for 20 meters, you need to pull the bait towards you and repeat the descent. Here you need to wave the rod over the water as little as possible, so as not to scare the fish.

Fishing on a boat makes fishing more mobile; the bait can be cast with the current over longer distances and at any place you like.

The chub takes the bait from its tail. Therefore, when biting, you need to make a sharp hook. Otherwise, the chub will prick itself and spit out the bait.

You can also fish with live bait and with a half-bottom. As the main one, take a fishing line with a diameter of 0.18 mm, a leash made of fishing line 0.14 mm, 40 cm long; The hook should be set to number 4-6. It will be enough to secure the minnow by the lip, and not make sharp casts.

You can also use girders for fishing with live bait. They are made from wooden slingshots, polystyrene foam, or plastic bottles. I have a few in stock. Each of them has both pros and cons. So, if you wind a fishing line around a wooden pole, then due to the compression of the branches, it can jump off them on its own. Styrofoam mugs should not be placed in shallow water, they will only scare away all the fish.

A rubber band is put on the bottle, and a folded fishing line is inserted under it. It should hold on so tightly that the bait fish does not pull it out, but so that the fish does not feel much resistance when catching the bait fish. Bottles are mounted on branches that hang over the water, or on the shore, near the water.

A fishing line with a diameter of 0.3 mm is suitable, without a leash. Doubles or tees should be used as hooks. Live bait needs to be hooked by the lips. Such girders can also be used as a donkey. A sinker weighing 30-50 grams is attached to the end of the fishing line, and a bait is attached to the outlet leash. And from the shore it is thrown to the desired point in the reservoir. You can also install such girders at night.

LURES FOR CATCHING CHUB FROM BREAD

Another fishing method is bread fishing. First, the fishing spot is fed by tossing bread. Once the fish has started to take the bait, you can start catching it. A piece of bread is placed on a hook and floated superficially downstream. A float is not needed in such equipment. The fishing line is taken with a diameter of 0.25 mm, hook 4 numbers. You can fish either from the shore or by going into the water in your boots.

The main thing here is that no matter how tight the line is, the bread should float completely freely. Also, the fishing line should not sink, no matter what scares the fish. If she becomes wary and leaves, she will not come near this place again today. And you will have to look for a new place. Therefore, you need to stand as far as possible from where the fish are staying.

DIY making

To acquire this bait without spending a lot of money, you can make your own wobbler from available materials.

Necessary materials:

  • a piece of wood, preferably flat, or buy a thin beam;
  • thin plexiglass or a piece of transparent plastic;
  • thin wire;
  • choose the colors you like;
  • varnish, but not ordinary, but yacht varnish;
  • 2 tees and rings, buy at a fishing store;

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Take a simple pencil and draw any shape of bait on a piece of wood, but it is advisable to start with the simplest one.
  2. Cut out the outlined outline jigsaw or hacksaw with fine teeth.
  3. Further you need to give the workpiece a streamlined shape, we achieve this using a file or coarse sandpaper. Next, sand with fine sandpaper until the surface is smooth.
  4. Need to make markings under the blade and hinges.
  5. Take a drill with a small drill and make holes for the hinges, and then with a large drill for loading.
  6. As a load lead cylinders must be used.
  7. Making an incision under the blade, cut out a blade from plastic.
  8. Processing our blank with drying oil, after it dries, we attach the parts with epoxy or superglue.
  9. After attaching the parts , cover with primer and paint.
  10. When the paint dries a little , coat with varnish.

Features of catching chub with wobblers

The features of fishing with a wobbler can be discussed using the example of the most popular wobbler in fishing circles. Yo - zuriL - minnow44:

  1. To start you need to purchase an ultralight spinning rod with a dough weight of up to 7 grams.
  2. Cord should not be bright (dark green, dark blue), with a diameter of 0.12 to 0.18 mm, since the cord can repel chub.
  3. Depending on the time of year Different wiring techniques are used. In the spring, when the water level rises and the current is very fast, preference is given to the rafting method with a slow retrieve speed or keeping the wobbler almost on the surface of the water. In summer, when the chub is less active and very cautious, you need to use the rafting method or simple casting with an average retrieve speed and small twitching. In the fall, you need to do it at any speed, but it is advisable to work with the tip of the spinning rod with short stops, creating twitch movements (combining them with simple wiring).
  4. The wobbler is effective in all weather conditions , but you shouldn’t go out in very windy weather (it will be difficult to cast and cast accurately).

Other baits

In addition to catching chub using spoons and wobblers, you can use other artificial baits, namely:

  1. Mosquito bait. It consists of lurex, dubbing and feathers. In appearance it is very similar to a mosquito. First, the “mosquito” falls to the surface of the water, but in subsequent casts it drowns.
  2. Lure for chub “fly”. It is an artificial imitation of various flies and other insects. Made from fibers, threads, feathers and other materials. Such flies can come in a variety of colors, shapes and weights. In addition, flies can be sinking, floating or located on the very surface of the water.
  3. Fishing with beetle bait. It is made of foam plastic and looks very similar to a real beetle. In addition, such bait may have legs and wings, which makes it an even more attractive food for chub. This bait should be thrown into a pond and retrieved slowly, then sharply hooked with a fishing rod.

Features of choosing bait and bait for chub

Depending on the season, the following attachments should be used:

  1. If chub fishing occurs in the summer, then the best baits for this season are:
    • steamed peas;
    • bread;
    • potatoes (boiled in shell);
    • bait flies;
    • corn.
  2. To catch chub in the spring, it is recommended to use the following baits:
    • Chafer;
    • grasshopper;
    • butterflies;
    • caddisfly larvae.
  3. To catch chub in winter, it is best to use the following baits and baits:
    • worms;
    • bloodworm;
    • shitik;
    • bark beetle;
    • spinner (rotating).
  4. If the catch occurs in the fall, then the best baits will be:
    • maggot;
    • bloodworm;
    • leeches;
    • caterpillars;
    • whitebait (minnow, bleak, small crucian carp);
    • pieces of meat;
    • liver;
    • corn;
    • pearl barley (steamed).

Depending on the gear used, the following baits and baits should be used:

  1. When catching chub to the bombard Artificial baits should be used, such as:
    • "mosquito";
    • front sight;
  2. If fishing is carried out using a donkey, then it is recommended to use the following components as bait:
    • river crustacean;
    • shellfish;
    • processed cheese;
    • gudgeon;
    • dragonfly larva;
    • dung-beetle;
    • peas;
    • corn;
    • grasshopper;
    • White bread.
  3. For spinning fishing, you should use rotating spoons in black or red colors.
  4. For catching chub with fly fishing, excellent baits include cockchafer, grasshopper and butterflies.
  5. If the catch takes place with gizzards, then small minnows, crustaceans, boiled potatoes and bread should be used as bait.

The best time to catch chub is early morning and evening. This fish almost never bites at lunchtime, so you shouldn’t catch it at such a time.

The chub reacts very strongly to sudden changes in weather conditions, so its biting activity can change frequently.

In different ponds, chub can have completely different taste preferences, so when fishing in a new place, the fisherman must have several different baits at once.

Probability of successful fishing It also depends on the presence of a boat, since the chub feeds near bushes, hanging trees, snags and similar places, casting into which from the shore will be problematic, sometimes simply ineffective.

You only need to find a feeding place once chub and you can fish in this place every year, with a constant catch.

If you are a beginner spinner , try fishing with experienced fishermen who will show you the correct use of wobblers when catching chub.

In spinning, in each of its branches, by which I mean a focused attitude towards catching fish of one species, there is an unspoken “gentleman’s set” of baits, the composition of which, as a rule, depends on local specifics. But these sets certainly contain lures that are basic for every angler’s arsenal, regardless of geographic latitude and longitude. For example, for those who like to catch pike - the oscillating spinner "Storling", asp - "Kastmaster", catfish - a heavy jig or wobbler.

And here for chub? It seems like, according to the good old Soviet books, a combination can be traced " chub - spinner". But recently, “chub - mini-wobbler”, “chub - ultra-light jig” or “chub - combined bait” have become increasingly common. This begs the logical question: what is the basic bait for chub today, which most practitioners hear about with approval? nod their heads? For myself, I found the answer - as before, it’s a rotating spoon.

Why exactly "turntables"?
The question, I would say, is incorrect (subjective) for most spinning anglers, because the catchability of any bait depends, first of all, on the degree of confidence in it on the part of the fisherman. In other words, if I don’t like it, I’m unlikely to achieve good results. But it would be frivolous on my part to explain my love for “turntables” only by, say, “genetic predisposition.” I came to these spinners because:
a) they showed themselves to be the most catchy (in the case of the chub, of course);

B) they are quite universal;
c) have intense “game”;
d) they are not demanding on wiring, which is important in conditions cramped by snags and algae.
I note, however, that this only applies to “rolling” chub fishing, i.e. in sections of rivers with moderately fast currents and background depths of 0.5-2 m, as well as about fishing in small rivers.

Requirements for the turntable
We will talk here not so much about the requirements for the bait from the spinning angler, but from the chub. So, the “chub ultimatum” looks like this.

1. Pinwheel must comply with the "rule of first posting". Let me explain: often in order to tempt the noticed person to bite chub, the spinner has only one cast at his disposal, after which a worthy specimen either attacks or immediately leaves. Therefore, strict requirements are imposed on the “turntable”: the ability to start quickly, stability of operation, the ability to change the wiring speed within the widest possible range. It is clear that only high-quality models fully meet this requirement, and if we keep in mind the small size of the baits used, then there is no alternative to “thoroughbred” spinners, with the exception, of course, of successful homemade products.
Important: the rule of the first retrieve is not a variation on the theme of the fishing imagination, but the result of “sighted” fishing, i.e. situations when the object of hunting is visible, the behavior of the bait and the reaction of the fish to the spoon.

2. As I already mentioned, the chub “spinner” must be small (but without fanaticism), i.e. No. 0-2. However, with all this, the bait must have the most intense “game”. And contain as many compatible stimuli as possible (acoustic capsules, “flies”, tandems, etc.), because “persuading” a chub to bite on subsequent casts is much more difficult than taking it on the first retrieve. I will say more: if the chub does not consider it necessary to attack the offered spoon from the first retrieve, then he will not take it at all. Therefore, success directly depends on the presentation of the bait, as well as on its irritating properties. But going overboard here is also unacceptable - overly aggressive “play” of even a small “spinner” can alert and even scare away a large chub.

3. The bait should not frighten the fish with excessive noise when casting, large size, etc.

Color

Ichthyologists claim that each individual fish has its own taste preferences. Therefore, it seems to me that the contents of the spinning player’s box should shine with all the colors of the rainbow. But here we are looking for the chub “hit”. And, if we follow the old book dogma, where everything depends mainly on the copper color of the petal, or at worst on the bronze-brass color, then in clear sunny weather we fish with dull petals (emphasis on “copper”, “gold”) , in cloudy conditions - set lighter ones (range: “silver” - “gold”). And the golden color of the petal is considered the most universal.

Needless to say, rolling fishing is very demanding on the weather. It goes without saying that there is sun or, at a minimum, no rain. According to that theory, “silver”, as the brightest, and therefore “cloudy” color, falls out of the holder. As a result of my fishing experience, I formed a different point of view: everything is the same, only exactly the opposite. The maximum number of bites occurred on silver petals, “gold” was in second place, but “copper” and variations on the Black Fury theme did not live up to my hopes.

"Fly" on a spinner - pros and cons

I repeat, the chub is very demanding when it comes to bait, therefore, the work of the “spinner” must be impeccable. And what, if not a well-chosen “fly”, better stimulates the precise work of the petal, its easy “winding up”?! On a small river this is the absolute truth (today). True, with a “fly” the casting range and accuracy deteriorate somewhat, but at a short distance (10-15 m, there is no need to go further) - this is not significant. But on a large river, where range and accuracy become crucial, the “fly” is not the best assistant, and here I prefer classic spinners equipped with a “naked” tee.

"Armature" spinners
By “reinforcement” I mean the combination of core and beads. There are two classic options: the first is the use of solid metal (maybe plastic) forms, the second is hydro-acoustic capsules (a striking example is Blue Fox). The first option, if we are not talking about heavy metals (lead, tin, tungsten, etc.), is usually lighter than the second. This is very important when “sighted” chub fishing on the river, when casting accuracy and minimizing noise when landing the bait play an important role. That is, roughly: on a small river I prefer solid, relatively light cores, on the riffle of a medium and large river - more and more liberally.

Petal shape (mepps scale)

Once again, there is a discrepancy between theory and practice. In theory, spinners with an oblong petal shape (Aglia Long, XD) and lures with a minimum angle of deviation from the axis of rotation perform better in the current (i.e. the same - and Lusox, which, in theory, has a record low angle of deviation from the axis of rotation , and therefore frontal resistance). From the point of view of a dry theory, in conditions of a powerful current of a roll, the leading position should belong to Lusox, Aglia Long, XD (and in exactly that sequence). Comet and Aglia are considered only as lake developments - and, as it were, fall out of fishing. In fact, the “hit” of the 2002/2003 season, and by a wide margin, were petals like... Comet, and second place went to... Aglia!!!

As for the small river, the Comet also takes the lead here; the front-loaded Lusox also performed well. By the way, if you strictly adhere to the theory, it becomes unclear why the reputable company Mepps developed the shape of the Thunder Bug petal? In terms of size and design, it seems to be just what we need for our fishing, but, excuse me, a chub in still water is rather an exception, and theoretically, there’s not much to do in the current with such a wide blade...

As for the specific sizes of spinners, in the context of individual types of petals, I adhere to the following proportions: Comet No. 1 and 2; XD Nos. 1 and 2; Aglia No. 0-2; Aglia Long No. 0-I+; Lusox No. 0; Thunder Bug (by the way, actually works reasonably well in the current) No. 0-2.

Decoration
By “decoration” I mean the combination of the petal’s own metallic color (core) and the color of the pattern applied to it. When a company openly “works for the buyer,” you won’t see any kind of decorations - here you will find drawn-out insects and scales. I am of the opinion that a fish is a rather reflexive creature, which is not always able to appreciate the “art” offered to it. Therefore, healthy skepticism will not hurt here.

In addition, undecorated ones also worked stably, i.e. devoid of streaks and stripes, but purely “golden” and “silver” petals. Sometimes the “trout decoration” worked. But the chub did not like the aggressive shine of the stickers - such as flexolite. Regardless of the color, the best impression was left by simple drawings in the form of ordinary dots on the petal.

Front loading or rear loading?

Objectively, I catch more with classic spinners with rear loading. There are many reasons for this: firstly, it is very difficult to find a high-quality unloaded chub-sized spoon, and secondly, according to practice, catchy fishing is simple: it all comes down to the “throw and reel” scheme - no “steps”, no jerks .

The main highlight, in my opinion, lies in the speed of the retrieve: it can vary from very slow, on the verge of breaking the petal (bottom fishing), to “asp” - when the petal captures air while rotating (surface fishing during a mass flight of insects). Why, in this situation, front loading?
And finally, thirdly: the chub is very wary of any kind of attachments - such as a swivel, a carabiner, not to mention a weight-head with a loop placed forward. But, it must be admitted, when fishing at depths of over 2 m, the alternative to front-loaded light and ultra-light “spinners” is very scarce, and more often than not, completely absent.

About the petal shape

The speed of its rotation directly depends on the shape of the petal. The narrower the petal, the faster and with less resistance the wiring occurs. As a result, the spinner becomes very “fast”. And vice versa - wide rounded petals are more stubborn and slow - and their rotation speed is lower.

The chub preferred Comet to all other options, hence the conclusion: for such fishing, moderately slow “turntables” with average drag are most suitable, i.e. a kind of “golden mean” that has “immunity” against the current - and, at the same time, a rather powerful hydroacoustic wave inherent in “lake” petals. In general, what to give the chubs to choose from is a very complicated question. And there is no need to expect a definite answer here...

Already rubbed and ground, thought and changed. Yes - this is the most popular and frequently used type of bait for catching the handsome bighead with rafting. Yes - often a wobbler is the most catchy and is in demand for such fishing. But there are several situations when other baits (micro-oscillators, spinners) for chub work no worse, or even surpass the catchability of a wobbler.

First and, probably, the most important thing is that the spoons catch the chub, and sometimes they are the only ones who catch it. This moment is especially often observed in the fall. It’s difficult to say what caused this, but it was in August-October that miniature spinners showed themselves in all their glory.

The second factor that is worth considering is that spoons of the size used to catch chub are most often equipped with a single hook, which makes them less susceptible to snagging on bushes and the crowns of fallen trees. But as we remember, this is where the trophy chub most often stands!

Another bonus in the direction of wobblers and, accordingly, a bonus for spinners is the accuracy of flight, which is especially evident in windy weather. Plastic is not metal, no matter how you look at it.

Among the favorites that have shown themselves to be excellent for chub, I would mention the following lures:

Boon spinner from Nories. Initially, like many Japanese micro-spinners, Boon was developed for trout fishing, but showed excellent results in our conditions. The spinner, despite its small compact size, has a very significant weight (3.5 grams). Works great at significant depths of up to 2 meters or more.

Two more favorites from Nories Weepper weighing 1.5 and 2.1 grams.

Smith Pure is a classic micro-oscillator, again from the Land of the Rising Sun. The spinner simply cannot help but catch. The bycatch often includes perches, asps, ides and quite peaceful fish - bleak, bream and other representatives of the reservoir. Spinner is omnivorous)

A very recent discovery for me was the spinners from the Water Land company - Neiler, Deep Cuper, Renge. Each baby (and the weight ranges from 1 gram to 5) showed itself in its own way, but everyone caught and caught perfectly! Range was especially inspiring. I have not seen such a game in any other bait even close. Oh, how he crumbles during pauses... a fishy nightmare.

Another work of art - the Forest Pal spoon, weighing 2.5 grams, mowed down chubs weighing 200-300 grams. True, I didn’t see any big trophies. Maybe for now...

The spinners of our local production - SV Fishing Lures - showed no worse than the Japanese. Very often they caught more famous and, accordingly, expensive spoons. And the quality of workmanship and a huge range of colors and weight solutions put them in no competition.

Perhaps, wobblers cannot claim the main position in chub catches, but at least it is worth having a backup option in case the fish completely refuse wobblers.

Separated from the rest in rafting chub fishing are rotating spoons. Whatever one may say, it will be easiest for a beginner to catch his first chub on a small spinner. Pinwheels are not as effective at catching passive fish as wobblers, but if the fish somehow wants to feed, then spinners will not be left without a catch.

There is no need to spray too much on the turntables. It is enough to have a dozen or one and a half catchy and working models in your arsenal. The main factor that you should pay attention to when choosing a spinner is the ability to start at a minimum speed and not disrupt the game in the current.

Here is the minimum set of spinners for chub:

Mepps Aglia Long from 000 to 2 sizes, both in natural and acidic colors, work even for children. Simply because it is the most famous turntable on the terenas of our homeland. Works great both against the current and perpendicular to the shore.

Mepps Aglia - same story. Simplicity accessible to everyone. They are relatively inexpensive. You can take risks and spend it on the verge of a foul - right next to the snags. Where the chub loves to sit, but where it’s such a pity to throw an expensive wobbler. The only thing is that it works best upstream or in coastal niches without current.

Myran Agat, weighing 3 and 5 grams, cannot say that it shines. But 3-5 times a season it shoots with terrible force. There were rafting trips, and even just fishing trips, when this particular rotator helped to get away from zero.

Blue Fox Super Vibrax is a good average. There are not enough stars in the sky, but in difficult times it will work for a B.

Well, and the turntables, which are all turntables' heads - maniacs, the author's work of Igor Nepomniachtchi, better known as Maniac (such a maniacal and delicate work in the good sense of the word). These babies are able to catch any fish that is in the pond. In addition to the obvious chub, ide, perch and other predatory fish, there were rudd, crucian carp, bleak and even gudgeon! Be sure to buy a couple of pieces. Gorgeous glitters.

Summarizing the turntables, we can say that they are not always the optimal choice, but the most universal and predictable. If you need fish on your ear, but everything else is silent, hang up a turntable.

Finally, a few words about the use of silicone baits for chub.

I don’t see much point in purposefully using silicone when fishing for bigmouths. Unless, as a scout for the presence of fish, in principle, you can launch a small edible twister or other crocodile. But I won’t argue that sometimes the by-catch when hunting for the same pike turns out to be a chub (almost always a trophy one of a kilo or more). There have been precedents more than once.

Something like that. Now feel free to set off on your journey for unforgettable sensations, a powerful adrenaline rush and, in general, all the delights of fishing.

Realization of plans, balance, integrity, understanding, beauty and freedom, to you! NHNCH!

This fish is characterized powerful bites, comparable in sensations to salmon bites. When played, he proves himself to be a worthy opponent. But catching him is not so easy. You need to have a good understanding of chub hunting tactics and, of course, have sufficient bait stock, among which rotating and oscillating spoons play an important role.

Where to apply

The chub is typical rheophile, that is, fish that live in running water. He likes to stay on stream- on rapids, at exits and entrances to rapids, on the reverse flow, in various whirlpools formed by turbulence of water around underwater obstacles - stones, fallen trees, bridge supports. The chub likes to stand on a flat stream without any visible fluctuations in the current.

The spinner must have a good understanding of where to correctly place the lure and what trajectory it should be taken along. Regardless of whether the angler is fishing from the shore or from a boat You must always take the right position.

Requirements for baits

Chub baits must have the following characteristics:

  1. Stable work.
  2. Range. Chub is a rather cautious fish, so casting range is important. In this parameter, spinners are superior to wobblers, so in certain cases they should be preferred.
  3. Casting accuracy. There are often situations when the bait needs to be placed exactly in the place where the fish splashes. Of course, the spinning angler must have a good casting ability, but the type of bait is also important. Spoons, especially oscillating ones, have an advantage over other baits, particularly in windy weather.

Spinners

Fishing with rotating spoons is the easiest, so a novice chub hunter should start with it. The fishing industry provides us with a truly unlimited selection of baits. What lures do you recommend and what should you pay attention to first?

  1. Spinner size. It is believed that the chub is more inclined to respond to small baits, so the size of the pinwheel petal varies from 00 to 2.
  2. Expert opinion

    Knipovich Nikolai Mikhailovich

    Important! The size of the petal depends not so much on the size of the intended trophy, but on the activity of the fish. The more passive the chub, the smaller the spinners should be used.

When rotated, the Aglia Long petal deviates from its axis by 30 degrees, and the Aglia petal deviates by 60 degrees.

  4. Core shape and size.

    Interesting. A very popular color among trout fishermen and grayling fishermen, the Black Fury color scheme is not very popular among chub hunters. Perhaps the chub prefers more monochromatic colors.

Popular models of spinners for fishing

Mepps spinners traditionally top the hit parade. A wide selection of colors, spoons with and without flies - the angler has plenty to choose from. Aglia, Comet, Aglia Long, Thunder Bug - you can always choose the most suitable spoon for catching chub.

Myran spinners also worthy of mention.

Pinwheels that have long been known to anglers Blue Fox Vibrax They show mediocre results in relation to chub.

Oscillating spoons

In recent years, fishing with microoscillators. This hobby first arose among rainbow trout fishermen, and later spread to anglers hunting for perch, ide and chub.

These spinners have advantages, which wobblers and spinners lack. Firstly, as standard, they are all equipped with a single hook, so they are less susceptible to snags, although, unfortunately, the execution of bites suffers. Secondly, casting the micro-oscillator will be the most accurate and farthest, which, as emphasized, is sometimes important.

Oscillating spoons best used in deeper sections of the river.

  1. A petal of the required size is cut from a sheet of metal.
  2. Using a hammer in a teaspoon, it is given the desired shape.
  3. Holes are drilled in the upper part of the petal.
  4. The copper wire is flattened to make it flat.
  5. A small piece is cut off and a hole is drilled on both sides. The piece of wire is bent and the clamp for attaching the petal is ready.
  6. As a core, you can use an oblong lead sinker with a through hole. Another option for making a core is to wind copper wire around a steel wire axis.
  7. Assembly of the spinner:
    • The steel wire is threaded through the hook and twisted around its eye;
    • put on the bead, then the core (see point 6);
    • another bead is put on, then a collar with a petal;
    • a loop is made at the free end of a piece of steel wire - the spoon is ready;
    • if necessary, the spinner is painted. To do this, the petal is first coated with a primer, and then a layer or two of nitro varnish is applied. The petal can be painted on one (outer) side or both. If desired, you can apply any design on top of the paint.
