The left bank is gently sloping, has narrow stretches, perfect for summer holidays. Entry into the water is mostly long - 100-200 m can be walked knee-deep. The right bank is steep and very picturesque. It is the right side of the reservoir that is navigable.
As a rule, in early May, the reservoir is cleared of ice. Water in shallow water warms up quickly, which gives ground for the rapid growth of vegetation. By the end of summer, due to the rapid reproduction of blue-green algae in stagnant water, a pestilence of fish may begin, which the water carries to the shore.
Fishing

The second is located higher and is similar to the river type. To the upper reaches of the city of Yuryevets, the reservoir is like a full-flowing river with a water mirror up to 3 km wide. Near the dam, water floods the entire Volga valley and looks like a real sea with a width of 11 ... 12 km.
Between the cities of Yuryevets and Zavolzhye, the left bank is low and overgrown with forest, the right bank is steep, high, and steep. Along the valleys of the tributaries of the Volga River that existed even before the flooding of the Gorky Reservoir, there are shallow bays that protrude deeply into the banks. Their width at the mouth is up to 5 km. The most noticeable of them are at the confluence of the rivers Nemde, Unzhe, Trotse, Yug.

Fish are caught in the reservoir, mostly large, well-fed. The most productive places on the reservoir: the reach of the Kostroma spill, the mouths of rivers and streams, bays, areas near settlements.
Winter fishing on the Gorky reservoir
There are many wonderful places for winter fishing on the Gorky Reservoir. One of them is opposite the confluence of the Unzha River, near the town of Yuryevets. The place has been famous since ancient times, when it was from here that fish was supplied to the royal table.
The site is good because three rivers merge here (Unzha, Nemda, Volga) and the reservoir spills over a dozen kilometers. The places are hard to reach, it is easier to get to them in winter.

An interesting place for winter fishing is near the town of Yuryevets a little higher along the Volga. Here, on the left bank, beyond the crest of the riverbed, there are plenty of perch weighing 200…3000 g. But it is also full of vertically located flooded trees. So the loss of mormyshki is not uncommon here.
You can catch a carp on large "devils" in zakoryazhennyh places. Particularly successful for this is the place above Yuryevets, on the tributary of the Elnat.

Ecology of the Gorky reservoir
The state of the reservoir from the ecological point of view is assessed by ecologists as satisfactory. The influence of polluting factors from industrial and domestic activities, although intense, is not critical.

I don’t like dark ice, well, it’s uncomfortable for me to fish on it, so when choosing a place for the first day of fishing, I suggested going to Barley in order to “slowly go down the mountain” and then everyone knows everything. But the fishing of previous seasons did not allow a very significant part of our crew to sit quietly on reliable ice, and accordingly it was decided to go to Segot for hefty perch and no less hefty roach.
At the entrance to the shore, they skidded a little, the road has not been cleaned and is unlikely to be cleaned in winter. We were on the beach at 8 am. There were already people on the ice - the crew of the UAZ loaf, which arrived before us. With a brisk step, trying the ice with a pawn, we set off “for the fish!”. We walked a little, 150 meters and the ice pick broke through the ice from the first blow. “Never mind,” we thought. But the people were already farther away, therefore, using the "art of light steps" they crossed a dangerous place. Further, the ice was 10 centimeters, but again not far. In general, two crews began to look for fish. It was not possible to search especially, as the ice was very bad in places. There were cracks, the edges of which went up and down, there were patches of ice that made their way through a pawn with one blow, but there were no fish in the camera, or in echo sounders, or on fishing poles. Or rather, no, I personally saw the capture of two perches on the balancers, I saw another one frozen in a sled and I heard about one from a reliable source. Well, everything with fish in this place. We decide to go to the hotel in Puchezh at 13-30, and at the same time see what is there with the ice.
We arrived at the coast. In appearance, the ice is no better than in Segoti, but we are glad to see a local fisherman coming ashore from the area of the first spit. True, he walked in zigzags, testing the ice with a pawn. Went to intercept the native. From the inquiries, we found out that “the ice is excellent, go wherever you want” (it was not for nothing that he zigzagged like a hare), the fish does not bite and he has only one perch in his “asset”, though a good “perch”. We decide to try. In the first hole, I have a changing bite and a perch of 30 grams on ice. I wanted to let go, but the dogma "about the first fish" plus their active support of most of the crew - I have to take the catch. We go carefully further, to familiar points, it is not far to go, but all movements are only with a pawn. At the point, fish faces poke into the camera! Here she is! Mormyshkas into the water and here they are the first fish of the Volga catch of the winter season. The fish pecked actively, at all without baits, especially at the devil. But there was already a lot of time, it was not possible to catch it, as it was getting dark, respectively, as they say, “curled up” - the main thing was to see the fish, here it is!
In the morning (Sunday) we went to the evening point and away. There were many more fishermen. Apparently pecked. We slowly trying not to interfere with each other "spud our beds." The fish today was more capricious, the devil only hurts, all the bites on a small carnation cube. Moving on the ice and active drilling made the fish very tense. In principle, the fish pecked all day, and if everything was done carefully, without frightening it, then it would be possible to catch it in one place. But not everything happens as you want, they made some noise, and the current was given and the fish left one of the points, they caught it on the second. I pecked mainly on a slightly lively wiring, but occasionally on an active "kach". At the bottom and up to 20 centimeters larger, smaller, but bolder. Steamboats hung a couple of times, one of them almost dragged a fishing rod into the hole when, during the interception, it missed the fishing line. The steamboats turned out to be roaches under 300 grams. The fish were different in size, but without frank little things, roach and perch were approximately in the same proportion. The cost is cheap, and the reliability is higher than the factory ones, which they say scatter into chips when they hit the ice, and this is when you need to get out of the hole.
About accommodation. For the first time I spent the night in a fishing hotel in Puchezh. Well, what can I say, whoever saw the dorms of the period of 80-90 years will imagine this harsh life. Nothing superfluous, but rest and sleep is enough, and the price is affordable 300-400 rubles. Additional amenities include an electric kettle on the floor, a microwave oven, a two-burner electric stove and even hot water! which made me very happy. One small nuance, drinking water in Puchezh is apparently high in iron, for those who are not used to such a taste, it is better to buy water in a store or bring it with you. Yes, your own electric kettle would also not hurt, so as not to languish in line, we had :)
About the catch. On the first day 2 roaches and 5+1 perch (+1 is the first undersize), total weight 800 gr. On the second day 8.8 kg. Total weight 9.6 kg. A total of 42 roaches and 42 perches.
