This greatly accelerated the process and in 1903 the cathedral was illuminated as a Roman Catholic church.

There are separate pools for children with slides and fountains, so that parents can safely let them swim.

Driving close to the central part of Batumi, you can see untouchable nature and breathtaking landscapes. A large number of waterfalls, rivers, lakes that surprise with their transparency and healing properties.

Andrew the First-Called Waterfall

The waterfall is located 1 km from the border between Georgia and Turkey. If you drive from Batumi, it is within a radius of 12 km.

On the way to the waterfall there are very beautiful landscapes:

Near the waterfall there is a statue of Andrew the First-Called, the first apostle of Jesus Christ. They say that it was he who preached in Georgia after long travels around the world and built the first Christian church.

Fortress of Gonio-Apsaros

The fortress of Gonio-Apsaros is considered the oldest in the region. Its age goes back several thousand years.

The total length of all the walls reaches almost 1 km, and the height is 5 m. 18 towers have survived to this day; previously there were 5 more.

They say that this is where the grave of one of the apostles, Matthew, is located. This is just one of the legends that shroud this fortress in mysterious ignorance.

But the serious mission was to guard the entrances to the river gorges that flowed into the Black Sea. The inner district was built on this territory. Later, the fortress turned into a supporting citadel of the Roman Empire. The culture of this state made a significant contribution to the construction: sewer pipes and barracks.

Over the past 20 years, the fortress has received the status of a museum-reserve. Since a treasure of the 3rd century AD was found on the territory. At the moment, archaeological excavations are ongoing, but tourists are allowed to enjoy this historical monument.

Confluence of Acharistskali and Chorokhi

Heading to the Adjara gorge - Machakhela, you can contemplate waterfalls and high mountains. And also, the confluence of two rivers - Acharistskali and Chorokhi. Two stormy streams merge into one and continue to flow in the same direction. The first is darker, and the other is crystal clear. And the naked eye can see their difference and contrast. Tourists often say that this is one of the most romantic and breathtaking wildlife spots in Batumi.

Interestingly, Acharistskali begins on the Arsian ridge and has a hydroelectric power station. It is a tributary of the Chorokhi River.

Adjarian wine house

There is a winery located in the mountainous part of Adjara, founded in 2010. It was created on the ruins of an old factory, also for the production of wine.

Here you can observe old production traditions and taste different grape varieties. Among them is the famous “Chkhaveri”. You can also buy exclusive bottles. They are not sold in any store outside the Adjara Wine House.

In addition to enjoying excellent Georgian wine, it is worth considering old containers and vessels, barrels, going down into the cellars. Pleasant staff will provide all the information you are interested in about the wine business and will give you a tour.

Makhuntseti Waterfall

The height of the Makhuntseti waterfall is 30 m and is considered one of the largest in the region.

Swimming is allowed in the bowl of the waterfall, so it is worth bringing a swimsuit with you. You can also go to the cafe located nearby.

Arch Bridge of Queen Tamara

The bridge was built across the Adzharistskhali River, about 30 m high, and is very ancient - approximately 900 years old. It was built in the form of an arch made of rocks, which were chipped off near the place of erection in honor of Queen Tamara.

Previously, trade was carried out near the bridge. Now, it’s just a beautiful place with a landmark.

Sometimes they jump into the water from the bridge or just swim near it. Clean water allows you to enjoy swimming.

Green Lake

If you need a quiet place with mirror water, you should go to Green Lake. The reservoir lives up to its name: it shimmers in all shades from green to blue.

The temperature always remains cool, so in the summer heat it will feel like paradise while swimming in the lake. But you need to swim closer to the shore, since towards the middle of the reservoir the depth can reach up to 20 m. There may be large and sharp fragments of stones at the bottom, because the lake is of volcanic origin. A pleasant plus is that the water is safe for drinking and completely free of fish and other living creatures.

Mtirala National Park

There is a national park on Mount Mtirala. The microclimate is one of the most humid and foggy throughout Georgia.

One of the interesting points is the presence of Colchis forests and boxwood, which are found nowhere else on the entire planet. This is where you have a unique opportunity to enjoy these plants.

In addition to the rich flora with chestnut trees and beech groves, rare species of animals are found here: salamanders, lizards, wild cats, and snow dogs. Local residents who live on the territory call this place the Georgian jungle.

The park is also notable for its mineral springs and springs. They are said to have healing properties.

Fortresses and wooden houses built in the Middle Ages were found here.

There are several hiking trails in the park. If travelers do not have time to see everything, there is the opportunity to spend the night in hotel houses. Breathe clean air, wander among the trees, and in the morning go for a walk along a new path.

Picturesque views of the reserve.

Blogger Vladimir Zhoga writes:

Batumi is one of the closest and most inexpensive alternatives to our Black Sea resorts. The same sea, the same beach, the same people, the same vacation, just a different country. I have already written about the pros and cons of Batumi as a beach resort and today I want to continue the topic.

Let's assume you have chosen Batumi as your summer vacation destination. What to do there? What to see? Where to go? What to try? Where to go for a walk? And anyway, what is there?

I offer a list of things that, in my opinion, definitely need to be done in Batumi! Especially if this is your first time in Georgia!

Sunbathe and swim!!!

Trite? Yes. But by and large, we are going to Batumi precisely for the sake of the sea. Because if we don’t need the sea, then why go to Batumi at all???

If pebble beaches and slippery jellyfish don’t scare you, you’ll definitely enjoy Batumi! The beach here is long, there is a lot of space, not crowded, and the sea seemed a little cleaner compared to some of our resorts.

Eat delicious khinkali, crispy khachapuri and wash it all down with tart Saperavi

Well, we are in Georgia, which means we need to enjoy its rather modest, but very tasty cuisine. I ate Georgian khinkali almost every day, and khachapuri is actually a Georgian brand! By the way, the most delicious Adjarian-style khachapuri in Batumi is served in the Tserodena cafe, which is located at Melikishvili 4, to the left of the entrance to May 6 Park. Be sure to try it, you won’t regret it!!!

Stroll along the “European” streets of Batumi and drink coffee in Piazza Square

Yes, yes, being a fan of old Europe, Saakashvili built a small decorative “Europe” here in the Italian style, and the main attraction of this part of Batumi is, of course, Piazza, which is made in the Venetian style and is a smaller copy of San Marco Square. The place is very beautiful, but the restaurants here are not the cheapest, I would even say, the most expensive (and according to rumors, not the most delicious). But you always have to pay for beauty! So you can just drink coffee in a beautiful place.

Ride a bike along the embankment

I would call the Batumi embankment one of the main attractions of the city. Very long, very beautiful and very well-groomed. There is always something to do here. In the evening it is the main place for walks and the city promenade, and in the morning and during the day it is a great place for sports! A long cycling and jogging path has been built along the entire embankment. The bike can be taken almost anywhere. There are special machines, like in Europe, with tourist bikes, but it’s better not to bother with the machine and rent a bike from one of the rental companies that are everywhere here. And we ride... The path is gorgeous: on one side is the sea, on the other the city... No one bothers, no cars drive, pedal and enjoy the walk!!!

Take a photo in front of the sculptures on the embankment

We are not leaving the embankment. There's more to do here. For example, take a photo against the backdrop of numerous sculptures that are installed along its entire length. Many sculptures are made specifically to be photographed with. Sculptures of different styles - from classic to modern. I didn’t really bother, but during the bike ride I saw how many there are and how interesting it is to beat them. This is much better and more interesting than taking pictures against the backdrop of trees, bushes and walls.

Play at the casino

In general, Saakashvili initially conceived of Batumi not as a resort city for a beach holiday, but as a “Las Vegas” of local spill. Luxurious hotels were built here, each of which has a casino downstairs! Misha expected that oil rich people from Baku, Turkey and other nearby regions would come to Batumi to squander their money. There weren’t many rich people, but a casino was built. Big and beautiful! So, if this topic is close to you, Batumi is perfect for this) I don’t have extra money, so I only saw it from the outside) But one thing I can say for sure is that there are a lot of them here and they all work.

Climb through the ruins of an old fortress

There is also a historical landmark in Batumi - the famous Gonio Fortress.

It is located a little away from Batumi, but you can easily get to it by regular bus. The fortress is small, but it is there! I think history buffs will enjoy it here. Again, you need to somehow diversify your beach holiday. And if you want to spend an hour or two somewhere during the day when the sun is shining, this fortress is a great place!

Visit the botanical garden

And for lovers of nature and greenery, the Batumi Botanical Garden is a must!

The garden is located north of Batumi near the village of Mtsvane. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the garden, although I really wanted to. I only saw its outskirts when I was driving from Svaneti to Batumi. According to all the reviews and photographs, this is a wonderful green garden that would be great to walk through. In addition, the garden is located on the mountain and offers magnificent views. In general, you should definitely set aside half a day and go here!

Go to the theater

Now for a little cultural recreation. There is a beautiful and modern theater in Batumi, where many famous troupes and groups come on tour. Especially during the tourist season. And since there is nothing special to do in the evening except the embankment and the casino in Batumi, why not go to the theater? Spiritual food is always needed!

View a unique Orthodox church in the form of a Catholic cathedral

Yes, yes, there is such a landmark in Batumi - the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Batumi.

The Catholic church was built in 1903, then, under Soviet rule, it was half destroyed and used for various purposes other than religious ones. Then they decided to restore it. Catholics allocated money and began reconstruction, but when the temple was restored, the Georgians decided that, despite its appearance, it would still be Orthodox (!) and handed it over to the Georgian Orthodox Church. A very unusual building - outside is a smaller copy of the French Notre Dame, and inside is a classic Orthodox church with Catholic walls.

Ten things in Batumi, of course, are not enough, but this is the format of my post: said 10, means 10!

Although Batumi is also full of interesting things that can and even should be done, for example, you can ride a Ferris wheel.

Lovers of “strong” drinks can drink from the “chacha fountain”...

Climb the “alphabet tower”...

Cool off in the fountain at Europe Square...

And you definitely need to go to the mountains!!! But this is already quite far from Batumi...

That's all. You can safely go to Batumi, there is definitely something to do and see there!

The city of Batumi has been familiar to many since Soviet times, perhaps even to some from childhood, and everyone, I am sure, has warm memories of this city. Before this trip, no one from our company had ever been to Batumi before; accordingly, we had not seen that old Batumi, and had already become acquainted with the updated one. And I must say, we really liked what we saw. All the main interesting places are located in the center of Batumi, within a relatively short distance from each other. We got acquainted with Batumi mainly on foot from New Boulevard, along the embankment, straight to the city center. So, updated Batumi: what to see and where to go.

1. The first thing we saw and appreciated was the Batumi embankment. In my opinion, this is the calling card of Batumi. The embankment stretches almost from the airport to the seaport, the total length is almost 8 km. On one side of the embankment there is a beach with the sea, and on the other a boulevard with palm trees, benches, a bicycle path, cafes, restaurants, shops, and nice sculptures. All this is well-groomed and clean all around, and this cannot but rejoice. In May, however, most of the above did not work, but there was no pandemonium. It was quiet, calm and uncrowded, just what we needed.

2. Lake Ardagan and singing fountains. If you want to admire the singing fountains, then while walking along the same embankment, go towards New Boulevard. It’s best to plan your walk in the evening, as this is when the singing fountains turn on. Next to the lake is the House of Justice of Georgia in the form of an inverted bottle. In the evening this building is also illuminated and looks interesting. By the way, there is a McDonald's near the lake.

3. In the “Park of Miracles”, which is located right next to the embankment and the seaport, you will find the Georgian Alphabet Tower, the Ferris Wheel and the Chacha Tower. The 130 m high tower has the shape of cellular DNA, the nucleotides of which are letters from the Georgian alphabet. The tower has an elevator and you can take it up to look at the city from above, but alas, at that time the elevator was broken and did not work. But we rode the Ferris Wheel. The Chacha Tower deserves attention because, as they say, once a day at different times for 15 minutes, real chacha flows from it. In the evenings, all interesting objects are illuminated, the Alphabet Tower and sculptures on the seashore look especially impressive. Whether during the day or in the evening, walking along the embankment and the center is completely safe.

4. Theater Square with a new fountain in the shape of Neptune. I don’t see much point in going there purposefully, since there’s really nothing special about it. But if you’re walking and have time, you can take a look, since it’s all located not far from each other.

5. Europe Square or Argonauts Square is located in the very center of old Batumi. This is where the statue of Medea stands with a golden fleece in her hands. There are nice buildings around the square, there is a fountain on the square, and at night everything here lights up and looks very colorful. Various celebrations, holidays and concerts take place on this square.

6. Piazza Square is one of the symbols of Batumi. Built in 2010, it is very impressive with its extraordinary artistic paintings, I was especially impressed by the domed ceilings. Nearby are the most fashionable bars, cafes, restaurants and, apparently, local bohemians and golden youth hang out there. This square hosts entertainment and cultural events.

7. Next to the Piazza, across the road is the Church of St. Nicholas. It really stands out and you definitely won’t miss it.

8. It is worth paying attention to the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A very beautiful and majestic building made in the Gothic style. The inside of the cathedral is decorated with paintings and huge stained glass windows. True, the impression is very spoiled by the beggars at the entrance.

9. If you have time, you can visit the Batumi Botanical Garden. You need to spend the whole day on it, as it is huge. And by the way, the Botanical Garden has its own beach, so it makes sense to take swimsuits with you.

10. Those who like to see the area from a bird's eye view will love it

In fact, all the renovations and new buildings in Batumi are concentrated in the very center; to see simple old Batumi you need to walk from the sea, going deeper into the city. And in the center, due to such a mixture of architectural styles, the juxtaposition of the new with the old sometimes causes bewilderment, surprise and much more :) And a few more photos of the streets and buildings of Batumi.

What is the first association that arises when you mention Batumi? Of course, thoughts about the Black Sea and the long embankment immediately pop into my head. A beach holiday in Batumi is a real relaxation. The beaches are free and equipped with everything necessary; there is enough space for all vacationers. But a holiday in Batumi is not only about the sea and beaches, but also about walks around the original city and interesting sights.

Day one: walking route in Batumi

While relaxing in sunny Batumi, you should definitely visit the local attractions for one day. It is worth noting that all the attractions are located very compactly, and therefore they can be explored in a day. Batumi is a modern city that is actively developing. It seems as if many different cultures are mixed in Batumi. There are traditional Georgian motifs in architecture, European squares, and Turkish quarters.

Batumi in the palm of your hand

The starting point for a sightseeing tour of Batumi can be Tbilisi Square, where the bus station is located.

From here, going down Chavchavadze Street, you can go straight to the embankment. Here, not far from the tourist information office, is the lower cable car station, which opens at twelve in the morning. The top point of the cable car is located on Mount Feria. It’s definitely worth going up to the top observation deck to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city. The cost of a round-trip ride on the cable car is 10 GEL.

Unusual sculptures

After having a good look around Mount Feria, go back down to the information desk. From here, head along the embankment to the seaport - the calling card of the resort Batumi. Not far from the sea terminal, a very interesting monument was built - a tower with chacha, where else can you see this except in Georgia?

Moving further along the embankment, you will reach a wonder park with attractions. In fact, this is the beginning of the famous Batumi Boulevard, the length of which is as much as 7 km! Of course, you can walk along the embankment on foot, but it’s especially romantic to ride along the boulevard on a bicycle, which you can rent in the Wonderland Park.

Walking along the boulevard, you will inevitably come across a variety of interesting sculptures and buildings. Right next to the Wonderland Park there is the famous moving sculpture of Ali and Nino.

Further along the route is the old Batumi lighthouse and the Alphabet Tower, as well as many different charming sculptures. If you have free time, you can take a ride to the Batumi seaside park, located at the very end of the boulevard.

There are also a large number of cafes along the embankment. If you get hungry, stop by any of them and be sure to try the local delicacy - Adjarian-style khachapuri.

Evening promenade

After strolling along the embankment to your heart's content, in the late afternoon head to the beginning of Batumi Boulevard. Here, next to the registry office, there are singing fountains. In the evening, these fountains turn into a real light and music show, which will undoubtedly leave pleasant memories. If you head from the fountains to Konstantin Gamsakhurdia Street, you can go to Theater Square to the Drama Theater. This square is always lively. Well, in its center is the Neptune Fountain - an exact copy of the fountain in Bologna.

Not far from here there is another famous square - European Square, where the Statue of Medea is located.

The next point on the route will be Piazza, so beloved by many tourists. So, head down along Konstantin Gamsakhurdia Street. After a few blocks, turn onto Tsar Parnavaz Street, which will take you to the Piazza. This is a modern square made with a European twist. The area of the square is surrounded by shops and cafes. This is a great place to relax a bit and have a coffee.

In a word, walking around Batumi is a real pleasure. And the city becomes especially beautiful in the evening, when lights and lights turn on everywhere. Music sounds from everywhere, tourists walk leisurely. An atmosphere of celebration and fun reigns on the streets of old Batumi in the evening!

Day two: Batumi Botanical Garden

The botanical garden is rightfully considered the pride of Batumi. This is a real oasis where you can hide from the summer heat. The botanical garden is located 10 km from Batumi in the Makhinjauri region. And you can get there by bus No. 31, which you need to take near the lower cable car station. The duration of the trip is only 20-25 minutes. The final stop is the main entrance of the botanical garden.

The botanical garden is open from 8:00 to 21:00. The cost of visiting is 8 GEL. The garden area is really huge and is divided into 20 thematic sectors. Therefore, in order to walk around the garden to your heart’s content, set aside at least half a day, or even a whole day. There are unusual plants, bamboo groves, and fragrant flowers here! In one word - beauty!

The beaches of Cape Verde stretch near the botanical garden. The water here is clean and azure in color. Therefore, it would be a good idea to take a swimsuit and a towel with you so that you can swim and sunbathe on the beach at the same time.

Day three: trip to mountainous Adjara

After visiting the local attractions, you can go to the outskirts of the city. So, one of the simplest routes is a trip to the Makhuntseti waterfall, which is located thirty kilometers from Batumi.

To get to the waterfall you need to take bus number 77, which goes towards the village of Keda. The bus leaves from Tbilisi Square to Batumi.

The waterfall itself is certainly very beautiful, about 30 meters high. Near the waterfall there is another attraction - Queen Tamara's Bridge. This is an old beautiful arched bridge over the river. Local residents say that it was built back in the 11th century.

Another option for an independent route is to go to the neighboring village of Gonio, which is located 12 km from Batumi.

You can get here by bus No. 16, which departs from Tbilisi Square in Batumi. It’s worth going to Gonio to see the ancient fortress. Entrance to the territory of the historical complex - 3 GEL.

The first historical mentions of the Gonio-Apsaros fortress date back to the 1st-2nd centuries AD. Of course, the fortress has seen a lot during its existence. But now the historical complex of Gonio has been restored and improved. You can use the services of a guide or explore the area yourself, climbing the walls of the fortress and examining the ruins.

In the vicinity of Batumi, of course, there are many more interesting things, for example, Mtirala National Park or Martvili Canyon.

However, these remote places cannot be reached by public transport. But if you still plan to visit these places, it makes sense to book a group excursion, since the trip will be cheaper.
