Higher education and universities in Bulgaria. Obtaining higher and post-higher education in Bulgaria School education in Bulgaria for Russians

He knew from the Bulgarian language: “T-shirt-bascha (mother-dad)”, but the teacher knew Russian well, so there were no problems, and he got used to it quickly.

The relationship between children and teachers is very good.

The son did not see another, thank God, but after the 1st grade a boy came to us, who studied the first grade in Russia, he was simply delighted, he liked everything here.

Primary school in Bulgaria - from 1st to 4th grade. Then another 3 years of secondary school, this is the main education, after which two mandatory exams in mathematics and Bulgarian are taken, according to the results of which (in total) the child chooses a gymnasium (mainly language, but there is mathematical, architectural, etc.), where to go on these scores.

In good schools, education is only up to grade 7, because. everyone goes to high school.

But, there are also schools with education up to grade 11, after which you can’t enter a university (or maybe, but you need to take something extra, I don’t know)

If the child entered the gymnasium, then from the 8th to the 12th grade he studies at the gymnasium. This education is equivalent to any European one, and a graduate can enter any university of any European country without additional training (unlike a Russian certificate, after which you can enter a European university only after completing two courses at a university in Russia)

Education in the 8th grade of the gymnasium is the most difficult. This is a complete immersion in a foreign language, the rest of the subjects are transferred to the 9th grade, only a little mathematics and Bulgarian, well, physical education, music, drawing in the lesson, in order to somehow relax.

My daughter just finished the 7th grade in Russia, and since she did not yet have permanent residence, she entered the 8th grade of the gymnasium as a foreigner, without exams (although we were preparing and did not know this), but on a paid basis.

The program in mathematics is almost the same for 7 years. The only thing she had to learn and pass in the summer was chemistry, which in Russia starts from the 8th grade, and in Bulgaria from the 7th grade.

Otherwise, all of her "fives" simply turned into "sixes".

6 - the highest rating in Bulgaria, it's excellent,

5 - Very good,

4 - good, but still not as good as in Russia, it feels like something between 4 and 3.

I can say one more important thing. Since our daughter studied English in Russia, we planned to enter an English gymnasium, and only, in the inspectorate (the place where they decide where the child goes, and not the headmaster) we found out that the language in ANY gymnasium is taught from absolute zero, from the alphabet.

And thanks to that kind woman inspector who, seeing her daughter’s excellent certificate, was surprised why we don’t go to the best gymnasium in the city, that is, to the German one?

To our: “Nicht Fershtein”, they opened our eyes.

5 minutes of thinking, and now my daughter knows both German and English very well. At the end of the gymnasium, the level of the main language is C1 (out of 6 possible levels, where A1 is a beginner, then A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2 as a native speaker)

And after graduating, you can study for free in Germany, and there, almost everywhere, education at universities is free, unlike in England, for example, where it is very paid. Although there are options with English: studying in Denmark and others. free countries.

Many universities in Germany do not require entrance exams, admission by the total score of the diploma. There are exams in Bulgarian universities. The choice is obvious.

But the 8th grade in a German gymnasium was very difficult for Bulgarians, and even more so for our daughter, since Bulgarian was still far from perfect, and 35 hours of German per week! All this, with mandatory additional classes, that is, from 7 am to 5 pm, but this is only in a German gymnasium, and, for example, in an English gymnasium - the usual regime (half a day at school).

From the 9th grade in the German gymnasium, classes have been going on as usual - half a day at school.

The beginning of lessons in Bulgaria for kids at 8 o'clock, from the 5th grade at 7-30, in the gymnasium at 7-15, but 6 lessons end at 12-10 o'clock.

Yes, different schools are different, but my kids have a different shift every month. For some, I know, shifts change half a year.

The preparatory class is free, and then the son received permanent residence with a USN (single citizen number) and always studied for free.

Now the children already have citizenship, since their father is a citizen of Bulgaria.

Other Russian children study for a fee - from 800 € at school to 940 € in gymnasiums per year ( approx. admin: today I asked Lilia (my hairdresser). They pay 800 euros a year for their son's education in Varna ).

School, the attitude of teachers, children, mostly very good. Like learning.

Yes, classes from Grade 1 are divided into English, Russian, German, Art and Dance. It's like that with my son. He is in the English class (language 3 times a week), from the 5th grade an additional Russian language will be added).

I personally read in a local newspaper that a Russian school will open in Burgas next year, where both Russian and Bulgarian programs will be taught.

Sounds good, let's see what happens.

In my opinion, such a strong language teaching, as in a gymnasium, cannot be found in any special school in Russia. Moreover, this technique has been carried out for decades in language schools in Bulgaria.

My niece (an excellent student), having graduated from the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Moscow State University, passed the same level of German (C1) as my daughter after 11th grade.

And we, as parents, are naturally satisfied.

Yes, and a very important point that Russian parents miss, and then suffer from it. If you are moving to Bulgaria with children, then please live in large cities, on the coast (this is Varna and Burgas), where there are gymnasiums, and where there is a CHOICE.

You remember that lessons start at 7 am, and your 5-year-old children will get up at 5 am, or earlier. There are, of course, heroes, but many cannot stand it and rent apartments in Burgas.

For those who want to emigrate to Bulgaria, the peculiarities of studying in this country may become an important issue. Education in Bulgaria is based on the principles of the Bologna system, that is, it includes several stages: bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies. Admission to universities is carried out without entrance examinations. However, studies are paid, both for Bulgarian citizens and for foreign students.

Advantages and disadvantages of Bulgarian education

Speaking about the advantages of Bulgarian education, it is necessary to mention:

  • The lack of verification of the level of preparation of applicants, which significantly increases the likelihood of admission.
  • Relatively low tuition fees compared to other European countries.
  • It is much easier for students who have graduated from a higher education institution in Bulgaria to stay in this country if they decide to live and work there, since the apparatus of the Bulgarian municipality favorably treats graduates of Bulgarian universities;
  • It is possible to get school education in three languages: Bulgarian, English or Russian.

The main drawback is the exclusively commercial orientation of education in Bulgaria, and it is paid at all levels - from kindergartens and schools to universities.

How the educational system works

The Bulgarian educational system includes preschool, school and higher education. In this regard, different types of educational institutions are distinguished.

Pre-school education in Bulgaria means kindergartens. It is mandatory and lasts for four years. Depending on the needs in Bulgaria, you can find different categories of kindergartens:

School education in Bulgaria lasts 12 years. The first four grades are primary education, eight grades are basic education, grades five through eight are considered progymnasium. From the ninth grade to the twelfth - this is already a gymnasium.

Higher education in Bulgaria is available for more than 40 public and 9 private universities, each of which provides an opportunity to obtain a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree.

In addition, in Bulgaria there is an educational degree called a professional bachelor. It is received by those students who graduated from technical colleges.

Top Universities

Bulgarian universities have been accredited in accordance with accepted European standards. Immigrants from Russia, most likely, will be interested in universities in Bulgaria in Russian. There are no fully Russian-speaking universities there. But in Varna, the branch of the New Bulgarian University (NBU) offers a 4-year undergraduate program in the direction of "International Tourism".

And, finally, the most interesting thing is the restriction of travel abroad for debtors. It is about the status of the debtor that it is easiest to “forget” when going on another vacation abroad. The reason may be overdue loans, unpaid utility bills, alimony or fines from the traffic police. Any of these debts may threaten to restrict travel abroad in 2018, we recommend that you find out information about the presence of debt using a trusted service

The NBU was founded in the capital of Bulgaria in 1989. The new Bulgarian University in Sofia focuses on the humanities, communications and arts, and is the exclusive representative of the British Open University on the territory of Bulgaria in the field of distance learning.

The NBU is also a full member of the Francophone University Agency and other authoritative international organizations, such as: the European League of Institutes for the Arts, the European Association of Student Theaters, the International Center for Communication between Television and Film Schools, the Union of Informal European Theaters, the International Association for Semiotic Studies, the International Institute of Administrative Sciences and the Network of Institutes and Schools for Public Service in Central and Eastern Europe.

The university, profiling and leading in the fields of agriculture and medicine, is the Thracian (Trakian) University of Bulgaria. He also trains veterinarians. The Economic University of Varna in Bulgaria offers 17 directions in full-time and part-time forms of study. It has one of the oldest university libraries in Bulgaria, as well as an educational and sports base for rowing.

Documents required by a foreigner for admission

After a particular university has been chosen, it is necessary to collect a package of necessary documents and submit it either directly to the chosen university or to the Ministry of Education. In Bulgaria, studies begin on October 1, documents must be submitted before September 1. Required:

  • statement;
  • copy of the passport;
  • medical certificate, translated and certified;
  • a copy of the certificate, translated and certified;
  • academic certificate - for applicants from Russia.

Within a week, the university will give an answer, and if it is positive, you can start preparing documents for obtaining a visa.

University admission for Russians and Ukrainians

Studying in Bulgaria for Ukrainians and Russians provides an opportunity to get a European diploma in one of the most convenient ways. Of course, it is desirable to learn the language first, but Bulgarian is based on the Cyrillic alphabet, and if desired, this language can be mastered in a few months.

Study visa

After the university has sent you a letter of admission, you need to collect a package of documents for a visa, and it looks like this:

  • a document confirming the payment of tuition;
  • a document confirming admission to the university for full-time education;
  • valid, the validity of which must expire no earlier than one and a half years from the start of the visa;
  • a photocopy of the national passport;
  • color photograph 3.5x4.5 cm in size;
  • completed visa application form;
  • valid in Europe for the duration of the trip.

The visa is issued for a period of one year, for the second and subsequent courses of study, you must provide a valid certificate from the relevant university.

At the same time, you can extend your visa on the territory of Bulgaria.

Russian schools in Bulgaria

In Bulgarian schools, education is conducted in Bulgarian according to the Bulgarian curriculum. The Russian language in many schools is studied as a foreign language, and it appears in the fifth grade. Accordingly, one should not hope that the child will be able to perfectly master the Russian language exclusively according to the school curriculum if no one studied with him at home.

If you want your child to speak Russian at a level worthy of a native speaker, you can either study with him on your own or send him to a Russian school.

In Bulgaria, there are two categories of Russian schools: schools where the educational process takes place entirely in Russian and according to the Russian program, and ordinary Bulgarian schools, where the Russian language is simply studied in depth.

The Russian school in Bulgaria at the Russian Embassy for a long time was the only school with instruction entirely in Russian. Children of diplomats of the Russian embassy study there free of charge, the rest - for a fee. In 2015, a similar school was opened in Burgas, but it does not have the official status of a school. There are no reliable reviews about the quality of teaching in this educational institution.

Now only the secondary school at the Russian Embassy in Bulgaria can take exams and issue certificates. The educational program of the Russian school focuses on the study of foreign languages: from the first grade they begin to learn English, from the fifth two additional foreign languages are introduced.

The cost of studying in Bulgaria

The only chance to get a free education in Bulgaria is to win a European-style grant. In all other cases, the cost of an academic year depends on the city and educational institution, as well as the specialty. Payments per year on average vary from 1,000 to 5,000 euros. Medical specialties will cost more.

Since there is a branch of an American university in Blagoevgrad, whose diploma is quoted in the United States, the question may well arise, how much does it cost to study at an American university in Bulgaria? The difference with the best Bulgarian universities is enormous: the cost of one year is $10,000.

For admission to the American University (AUBG), you need to score a minimum of 1000 points on the SAT exam and 80 points on the TOEFL iBT exam. In turn, the university offers scholarships (scholarships) to those applicants who score high on the SAT. Scholarships can be up to 100% of tuition fees.

Education in one of the Bulgarian universities has a number of advantages for foreigners from the CIS countries who plan to link their lives with Bulgaria or Europe as a whole. The country has a fairly high level of education, university degrees are recognized by most countries in the world, and tuition fees are offset by low living costs, which cannot be said about the more developed countries of the European Union.

In addition, Bulgaria has a comfortable climate, many places for recreation, including the sea coast and mountains. Getting higher education in Bulgaria for Russians, Ukrainians and other citizens of the post-Soviet space will increase the chances of finding a job in one of the Bulgarian companies and simplify the procedure for starting a business. Perhaps this will be the first step on the way to Bulgarian citizenship and moving to Europe forever.

In 2019, more than 280 thousand students study in the classrooms of Bulgarian universities, about 5% of which are foreigners. The most popular areas are business, social and human sciences, construction, industry, medicine and art. Training programs are presented not only in Bulgarian, but also in English, French, German, and even Russian.

Higher education institutions in Bulgaria enjoy wide independence, that is, they independently develop curricula and training programs, and are accordingly responsible for the quality of the education provided. Students of Bulgarian universities have the opportunity to obtain the following scientific degrees:

    Bachelor. The term of study is 4-5 years. The received diploma opens access to most civilian professions, however, about 70% of students prefer to continue their studies in master's programs.

    master. Requires a bachelor's degree and provides deeper knowledge of the profession. The term of study is 1-2 years, in some specialties, for example, architecture, a longer course is possible.

    Doctor. It implies the implementation of research activities and the defense of a doctoral dissertation. The term of study is 3 years after the master's degree.

The higher education system in Bulgaria is part of the Bologna process, built on the principle of loans, and includes 51 educational institutions, both public and private, including:

    30 universities, of which 25 are public and 5 are private. They provide education in a wide range of specialties, including the humanities, natural and technical sciences. They have an extensive infrastructure and material base for a full-fledged educational process.

    13 higher specialized schools, of which 11 are public and 2 are private. Aimed at providing education in one or more fields of science. Prepare specialized highly qualified specialists.

    8 colleges, of which 1 is public and 7 are private. Very often they are an integral part of universities and offer training in a relatively short time. At the same time, there are also completely independent colleges that provide higher education on their own.

The academic year at universities in Bulgaria, usually lasting 32 weeks, consists of two semesters - autumn and spring. Beginning of training in September-October, end in May-June.

For successful admission to the university in Bulgaria, depending on the chosen language of study, you may need to pass preparatory language course. Many universities specially organize such courses, as a rule, for a period of 1 year. The cost can be several thousand euros.

For foreign students, for example, Ukrainians or Russians, language skills are one of the main requirements for admission. Otherwise, Bulgarian educational institutions may establish additional conditions for applicants, but in general it is enough to provide the following documents:

Documents must be translated into Bulgarian and certified with a special Apostille stamp. The deadlines for applying for admission to universities in Bulgaria usually take place during the summer period - from June 1 to August 30.

After the official confirmation by the educational institution of acceptance to the course, the foreigner issues a student visa, and upon arrival in the country, a residence permit in Bulgaria. For more information, please contact the school directly.

Unfortunately, free higher education in Bulgaria is not available not only for foreigners from the CIS countries, but also for the Bulgarians themselves and EU citizens. True, for the latter, the fee is significantly lower, about 300-600 euros per year. For other foreign students, depending on the university, language of instruction, program and specialty, on average, one year of study will cost 2000-8000 euros and more. Programs in Bulgarian are cheaper.

The country does not have a lot of jobs even for its citizens. The most expensive areas of study in Bulgarian universities are medical specialties, ranging from from 5000 euros and higher. Technical and economic professions about 2000–4000 euros.

On the other hand, the expenses for daily needs in Bulgaria compare favorably with other European countries. For example, renting a house, food, travel, minimal entertainment for an average Bulgarian student costs 300-400 euros per month. Of course, depending on the city and personal claims of a foreigner.

Bulgaria has recently become part of Europe. Accession to the European Union left its mark not only on the life of the citizens of this Slavic country, but also on the education system. However, although education in Bulgaria has become one level different from the Soviet school, now education diplomas obtained in the country's higher schools are quoted in almost the entire English-speaking world.

Levels of education in Bulgaria

Basic education in Bulgaria is divided into 12 classes. After receiving a complete basic course of knowledge, graduates get the opportunity to choose a specialization and enter a higher school, which has three branches of development in the country according to the Bologna system.

Full education is considered compulsory, the initial stage of which is elementary school. In elementary school, students study in the 4th grade. Next, there is a pro-gymnasium stage, which also lasts 4 years until the 8th grade. The senior school - on the 12th class, is called gymnasium. It already has profile branches that allow students to decide on their future specialty. The Russian school in Bulgaria includes all of the above levels, education in Russian is given in a single form with a focus on the Soviet system. There are also specialized schools: sports, technical, etc.

Primary basic and secondary education in Bulgaria

Schools in Bulgaria generally accept all students, regardless of nationality. For citizens of the country, primary and secondary education is free, while immigrants will have to pay for the education of their children before obtaining citizenship. In public schools, a year of education for a child costs 100-300 euros, while in private schools the cost of an academic year can reach up to 2,000 euros.

Public and Russian-language schools in Bulgaria accept students whose parents have provided the following package of required documents before the start of the school year:

  • medical record of the incoming student;
  • birth certificate;
  • a certificate from the previous place of study, if any;
  • a personal file from a previous school.

It is assumed that the entire package of documents will be translated into the state language and must be notarized. For subsequent admission to local universities, knowledge of the state language is a big plus, therefore it is desirable to graduate from public schools.

Higher education in Bulgaria

Higher education in Bulgaria is graded in accordance with the Bologna agreements. So, the higher schools of the state involve obtaining the following degrees:

Today there are more than 50 universities in the country, including 9 private colleges that issue a European diploma. The education system in Bulgaria assumes the presence of the following types of educational institutions: classical universities, colleges and an analogue of our vocational schools - specialized schools-higher education institutions.

Admission to a university, training for Russians

All education in Bulgaria for Russians is paid, and this applies to universities. True, there is also a plus, in universities, education in Bulgaria for Russians begins not with exams familiar in our country, but with language testing. Knowledge of the language and the presence of an official certificate of complete secondary education is sufficient for an applicant.

Submission of documents to a higher educational institution in Bulgaria involves the collection of the following package of documents:

  • certificate of complete secondary education (11 classes for Russia) or a diploma of higher education in your country;
  • complete medical certificates obtained from the attending physician, including documents on the presence of serious diseases, disability groups, etc.;
  • a cover letter from the educational institution in which the certificate or diploma was issued, confirming its legality and validity.

Again, all submitted documents will certainly have to be translated into the state Bulgarian language through a translator and notarized. It is better to do this before leaving for Bulgaria, because the prices for certification and translations there are much more expensive than in the Russian Federation.

Consideration of the submitted documents usually takes about a calendar month, so applicants should worry about submitting a package of papers in advance. Only after the approval of the documents it will be possible to apply to the embassy to obtain a visa to the country of type "D", it is given for one academic year, and enter Bulgaria.

As a rule, studying in Bulgaria for Russians who do not know the language begins with a year of its study. Language courses, of course, are paid and are held on the basis of the chosen educational institution. An accelerated study is also possible. Cyrillic Bulgarian is quite easy for Russian-speaking immigrants, so usually there are no problems in learning it.

It is important to note that obtaining a Bulgarian education does not entitle students to apply for a residence permit. A student visa "D" is given for exactly one year, after which it will need to be renewed, confirming the documented study at a higher educational institution.

The cost of studying in Bulgaria, free education

Despite the fact that education is certainly paid for visitors to the country, with the exception of the winners of European-style grants who came on a call, the cost of education in Bulgaria is still much lower than in old Europe. Depending on the category of the educational institution and the city of its location, prices may vary, but on average, you will have to pay from 1,000 to 5,000 euros per year of study. For comparison, the average price of a year of study in Russia is 2,000 euros, in the UK - 20,000 euros, in Switzerland - about 30,000 euros per year.

Paid for students in Bulgaria is not only education in the sciences, but also housing. There are simply no free hostels and campuses in universities. In the capital, a month's rent for a bed in a dormitory will cost about 100 euros per person, while a three-room apartment will cost 600 euros, a small amount compared to Moscow. Food costs are 250-300 euros per person.

The ratio of the price tag for Bulgarian education and the quality of education in Bulgaria is optimal. And if we take into account that the diplomas of almost all higher educational institutions of the country are recognized in Europe, then Bulgaria can be considered the best country for a student. Moreover, in Blagoevgrad there is a branch of one of the American universities, the diploma of which is quoted in the USA, and the knowledge base received by students fully complies with American standards.

From the foregoing, it will be obvious that, of all European countries, Bulgaria can be considered the most suitable for obtaining both secondary and higher education, recognized almost all over the world. Prices in the country, relative to, for example, Moscow, are low, including in Sofia, and the Bulgarian language, thanks to Cyrillic roots, is easy to learn and understand on an intuitive level. And an additional advantage of this country can be considered a large selection of grants and scholarships, which, with due diligence, are not difficult to obtain, and the opportunity to ride around Europe with a student visa is also worth a lot.
